Trucked Up EVs

When it comes to EV trucks, the segment is often fighting an uphill battle to combat all the FUD and misinformation spewed out about them. What's worse is when a so-called pro-ev channel starts doing the same!
Electric Viking's Sam Evans is fast becoming a poor source for accurate news on EVs by not bothering to check sources before churning out a prolific amount of sometimes questionable content.
This week, the F-150 Lightning ended up in his cross hairs. Too bad almost ALL of his points are beyond misleading!

But all your content in this video is inaccurate, Sam. Are you going to leave it up? At least do a follow up and correct it. Let's celebrate these amazing times of having so many choices with evs, and now ev trucks. There's no need to bash a product or company that hasn't actually failed in the manner that you've claimed. Good luck with the channel. It's obvious you're doing very well, but put out more of this kind of misinformation and you start entering the 'Scotty Kilmer' zone. I suggest going back to your 'who am I" video from three years ago and ask whether or not you're still on that mission. Up until recently, I religiously watched your channel. Not so much anymore.

I hate it when people say everybody or all. I know several KZbinrs who are mega Tesla fans that love the Ford 150 EV and when they compare it to the Cybertruck it comes out about even. The main difference is in these two vehicles are a persons choice and what one vehicle has the other vehicle doesn’t have vice versa and so for all the KZbinrs I watched they’ve all said that the this vehicle is an amazing vehicle. So all the major fan boys of Tesla walked on KZbin agree with you that the Cybertruck and the F150 are both amazing vehicle vehicles and some like aspects of one and the other and both have found flaws in both of them.

I think the thing about is that a non-bespoke EV platform is simply a half-assed approach, the result however can be-and in this case is- be really good nonetheless. The same applies for the BMW i4, which quite the same is also a hybrid/ICE platform - and yet performs great. However, it is indeed disappointing from a technical point of view, given how long electrical vehicles are and even more how long they could be on the market. It just shows lack of innovation and slow rate of adaptation.

CEO Farley I think is equally fed up with them, but keep in mind that many states that are supposedly 'pro free market capitalism' have protectionist state legislation that makes it illegal to sell a vehicle without it going through a dealership, which basically is the antithesis of capitalism and more a form of corporate welfare. Theses auto CEOs are screwed because they MUST sell their fleets through these buggers. It's a double edged sword. Many Teslas are still sold out-of-state because direct Tesla sales centres are not permitted. Same goes for Rivian and Lucid.

I don't think he or anyone else is paid by Tesla. Tesla is so bad it doesn't even have its own media or PR department. He's like many. Tesla has great positives, and has really moved the needle forward with the advancement of electrification of automobiles and forced the world to change - but that dog doesn't hunt anymore. Tesla has become a corporate representation of a vile, caustic, polarizing individual, and very little focus on the driver experience and benefits - with more almost exclusively on manufacturing simplicity to make more money (something every fanboy will point out, that all the 'other' ev makes are losing money, as if that matters regarding customer benefits). Rarely does a Tesla 'believer' acknowledge this - because they're in a cult. To start going against Tesla, the fans will roast you alive and you'll be excommunicated - expelled from the 'clan'. Just ask Ben Sullins or E For Electric. I think how Ben has re-invented himself and broken free from a Tesla-is-perfect narrative is a tough thing to do when your whole gig is wrapped around it. He did it. Few others will. I feel for Sam. He's going through a lot with his family right now, and he seems to be churning content to make more money - and it looks like it's working well for him. Misinformation of any type is hurting our communities and undermining our ability to debate among friends, to interact with other countries, and secure our children's futures. It's only been a year since the Cybertruck started production and it is already the 3rd best selling EV in the US. Tesla has yet to scale the Cybertruck to its full production rate, and already it has outsold the Ford Lightning's total sales for 3 years. What is limiting Cybertruck sales is actually production rate (not demand). Tesla is selling Cybertrucks as fast as they make them with a wait time of one month. The Cybertruck is still in its early stage of ramping up, so, it's too early to judge the demand. For perspective, Tesla will produce a limited amount (50,000 units) this first year, but will quickly ramp up to an annual rate of 150,000 units by the end of next year when all the production kinks have been ironed out. But the fact that the Cybertruck has sold 27,000 units on its first year at a price of $90,000 (foundation series), actually hints that it will be selling like pancakes when the price is dropped to $60,000 next year. Really, you are the one who sound clueless.

It has not outsold Lightning's total sales for 3 years. I am happy to debate any point and I welcome standing corrected, but please use accurate numbers. Ford sold 15,627 units in its first six months in 2022, much better than Cybertruck in its 1st six months, taking 9 months to sell 16k. Year to date only, Lightning has sold over 23,000 units and anticipated the last quarter will top this one at 7k. Ramp at Ford was slower due to challenges at the factory, but still has incressed sales year over year sonce inception. Also, the Lightning hasn't been out for 3 years. The first production vehicle sold in June, 2022. Tesla had a wait time originally of 4-5 years based on its preorders. That pent up demand has now been met by the looks of things, burinng through the preorders already and only a month wait is a poor sign of things to come. The first adopters are all done, and now the reality check on sales sets in. I think it will continue to do well, but nowhere near as well as originally anticipated (that is my opinion). Time will tell.

@@truckedupevs I Think that the price of gas is going to start being a problem for sales. It has dropped to about 285 here in mass. That combined with pre-orders/early adopter sales drop and environmental/climate denial are going to continue to be hurdles. It appears that the government has told big oil to go ahead and drill all you want and make your money now, even though it is contradictory to electrification of vehicles. And it appears that big oil is ready to go down with the ship because as energy suppliers for vehicles, they have not lifted a finger to enter the electrification of vehicles. At least to the naked eye, maybe they have divested behind the scenes. The good news is that Tesla has risen to big oil status or bigger and GM is making a BIG splash in electrification. How long can cheap gas continue? We are going to see the free market, take twists and turns. But in the end governments of the world will have to continue to acknowledge that electrification is far far less destructive than fossil fuels and continue to act on it. The F150 Lightning has a VERY bright future.....Why? Because its an F150 !!!!

Great video. I would point out for the CT that it's the top selling EV over $100k and it is impressive that they are moving so many units at that price point. Time will tell if that increases as they drop the price and even perhaps can secure qualification for the federal tax incentives. Those 2m reservations (myself among them) was based on the original timeline, pricing and range so it's also not surprising so many canceled (or like me got the Lightning in 2022) for one or all those benchmarks falling short.

I haven't really paid any attention to what stock of Ford Lightnings the dealers around here were stocking so I looked at the dealers in Grande Prairie ( which you were not far from ) and I see the larger dealer which has a huge fancy new building to complement their volume of vehicles they handle up in this part of Alberta, they have one Lightning on their lot currently which is listed as new but its a 2023 model which I find odd to see if the sales are on the rise. So then I looked at one of the Ford dealers in Edmonton and they had E Mustangs as well as a few Lightnings and again the age of them and the massive ( or at least in my mind ) discounts on the 2022 model year of up to 29000.00 and to even have a few 2022 model cars is a shocker. As to the Lightning, they even have a new 2022 model, a couple of 2023 models with 25000.00 discounts and three 2024 models with a lesser discount. My question is why would these dealerships still have 2022 and 2023 models if they are in such demand, and why the huge discounts and still they sit on the lot ?. They may very well be selling decently in some locations but I am not getting that vibe in central or northern Alberta that customers are too swift to buy them up.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 23 күн бұрын
Excellent point. I went to 3 dealership lots when I was on the road, and none of them had discounts on the windows of the Lightnings they had. However, I noticed a trend. When the Lightning first came out, there was a massive back-order. Ford started building factories to meet demand - and the dealers started drooling. Within months, both in Canada and the US, massive 'market adjustments' were glued on the MSRP, sometimes $50k above it. Furthermore, the vast # of pre-orders were for XLTs and the Pro. But the large profits were all in Lariats and Platinums. In 2022 & 2023, almost every single Lightning on dealer lots were the top trims, trying to exploit the demand. People walked in the tens of thousands, and demand crashed. Dealers were suddenly stuck with inventories of these things and started stripping off their mark-ups, but it was too late. Both Ford and the dealerships paid a significant price in self destructing their own product. But demand remained higher than most vehicles as far as year-over-year growth, despite them. In 2024, Ford rolled out the new Vapour Injected Heat Pump in all Lightning trims, making everything older far less efficient in winter. All of these factors have certainly had an effect, but the biggest is your neck of the woods. In central/north Alberta, municipalities have been noted as declining charging station applications from ev companies. Furthermore, municipalities like Cold Lake and High River are claiming they are losing thousands and pulling their chargers even though towns, cities and private companies are opening them up all over southern Alberta & the rest of Canada and making a profit. I'm not sure if these are the reasons for your area, but they certainly play a factor. The overall Canadian numbers a pretty clear. New vehicle registrations of ev trucks are up substantially from the previous year, and sales are only climbing. But North of Edmonton is an EV truck desert, for obvious reasons.

@@truckedupevs I got that impression as well as per orders that were put in with all the impending excitement and then as they took so long to build and perhaps the reality that they were not going to get their truck charged for free like the Tesla or cheaper anyway, and that they came to realize their home service wasn't able to feed the power for a fast charge etc etc, interest would naturally fall back. The other day I was at a chev dealer in GP and in front of their building as its been build fairly recently, they had two chargers where customers park as they come and go as I was and no EV happened to be making use of them although that was just a snippet of time in the scheme of things so no idea what the GM theme is as per who can even use them. Speaking of that I had to laugh as per the Birch Hills County theme, that is not far from where I am and although I pay little attention to the charger, I have never happened to see a vehicle sitting there when I have passed by that parking lot although you obviously did make use of it. This summer has been a total mess in that little town with the main street ripped up ... long ago I used to drive through on that road to the grain elevators they since have torn down and the train has not gone through there in years. What you would not have realized is that even the two fuel stations that used to be in that town, they no longer exist so the residences of the town have to drive to Rycroft to fuel up, typical declining rural town. But anyway yes up in the Peace country its vast and on the sparse side population wise with a rural theme and the main industries are oil and gas and agriculture ( and forestry ). Very different from the more urban theme of better maintained roads and closer to fuel stations as well as more charging opportunities without the vast distances between them.

@@truckedupevs Its a valid point about the heat pump because as a 2023 Lightning owner I have found myself with buyers envy that I dont have that and maybe should have waited a few months for the 2024. Keep up the good work. I am sick of misinformation coming from all sides (on more than just EV's of course). I've had an EV since 2018 and sure, back then there was a learning curve... mostly learning that range anxiety is not so much a thing once you actually have an EV. For around town driving, never having to even thing about range, fuel, or anything else, and never having to see the inside of a gas station unless I want some beef jerky, far outweighs any additional planning needed for the occasional road trip. Oh and not dropping $100 for a fill every week or so also helps. Within the first 2 weeks, I knew I would never go back to a gas car again. If we look at length of days of inventory held, and insurance registrations in the us, the number might be back a month each quarter but it washes out close to even, which is pretty good being that inventories of ICE vehicles, especially at companies like Stellantis, are piling up."

The last 3-5 weeks I've actually been trying to test drive them or work out deals, it seems over half the stock on most dealers' websites is already spoken for. It's not all roses for the Lightning though. Ford just halted production until January. That's like 10+ weeks - because they're not getting themselves out of the hole it's in selling at massive losses. 100% sales gains per year are all fine and dandy, but Ford likely needs 400% per year to make the bird sing - and they're not even close. It's a bit of a shock that Ford is so far underwater when other ev makers - including GM - are starting to break even or at least get close, especially when much of the Lightning parts chain came from the ICE F150 bin. It has me somewhat perplexed, actually. I'll be doing a video on that when I'm back. Still, facts are critical, whether it's good, bad or ugly for the ev truck segment. I really am grateful for your support, Chris. Won't forget it.

It's not the best, but since I've driven a LOT in both the standard and extended range models now, I can say that if charging up at home overnight and then going on the road more than the maximum range, the best thing is hitting a +150kw fast charger for 20 minutes and jacking the truck up to 60~80% from 20~30% in around 20 minutes, then moving on. That first 'ramp' has a boost period where I'm charging at around 180kw. That's not blistering fast, but it's not slow. The Silverado EV is lightning fast (hehe) at 350kw, and can go almost the same distance on a charge as an ICE truck ca on a tank. It's the on area Ford could improve upon, fro certain. Thanks for the great comment!

@@truckedupevs Well, I live in rural MN and drive all over the state, so range is a concern around here, as is the extreme cold range loss. My Model 3 LR does ok, but I still can't get to the northern border, at least in the winter time. What I actually want is a plug-in-hybrid F150, or Ranger. I hate to go back to gas, but I think in a hybrid I would be OK with that minimal gas use. Especially if it has like ~150mi battery range for majority of my commutes. Then just a simple non-turbo little 3-cylinder 30-40Kw generator to keep it going down the road. Would also be great to use it as an ice house generator for when I'm fishing on lake of the woods.

Thanks for your hard work and objectivity, I appreciate your take on Electric ⚡️ Viking. I personally have 3 Cybertrucks on order and I’m waiting for the same price and specifications promised. I will probably wait a very long time, maybe forever. I love the idea of a stainless steel shell vehicle. That being said I think the F150 lightning is a better vehicle in many ways and the Silverado EV too. I’ve been watching electric ⚡️ Viking for years now and he doesn’t really show or indicate a hit piece kind of channel. If he’s spreading FUD then it’s through his neglect. He loves EVs and dislikes hybrids and plug-in hybrids. His information usually checks out. He does seem to dislike Ford. I go to his channel for solar, wind, battery and Tesla news and don’t watch his reporting on the EV competition because I think it’s destructive to EVs in general ( yet helpful at times) but mostly reporting on the shortcomings of GM or Ford IS JUST BORING. Personally I think the objective is to make a comparable EV to Tesla at a profit and eventually a profit that can allow the company to sustain itself. The lightning is better but is it’s manufacturing sustainable to turn a profit? If your right about electric Viking it’s seems he is suffering from a little confirmation bias. In a world full of irrational biased Ford lovers and irrational biased EV haters and a world full of irrational biased diesel lovers it stands to reason why his little voice leans towards an unfavorable view towards Ford. If true he’s probably barking up the wrong tree because we need to help everybody to make the transition to electrified vehicles. Just my opinion and thanks for your wonderful channel 👍👍👍😀✌️

What a great and thoughtful comment! I think he's under a lot of pressure with so many personal things going on, especially with his wife, but I have noticed he seems to be trying to pump out as much content as possible, often putting out 2~3 videos per day! At that rate, it simply isn't possible to back-check sources. It shows in how he will produce a video 10 minutes long saying what could be said in 30 seconds. That's stretching the video to get more favourable algorithms. I've watched his channel since he launched it about 3 years ago, but things have slipped toward supporting one brand and bashing others vs. advancing clean tech and vehicles. I sincerely hope he goes back and watches his original "who am I?' video from 3 years ago and refocus on the channel's principles because he is a good guy t heart, it seems.

It has a 12v architecture, many computers, does not have OTA updates, no steering by wired. That Tesla can include 48V architecture, and ethernet routing of signals, with steering by wire and a few other advances features for just 80K (foundation series is over) is just amazing. Price at $80K will drop with better batteries (new batteries always cost less), with the reduction in cost achieved by mass production (that means at leas a production rate of 250,000 per year. The Chevy Silverado ev is a magnificent truck also. I have not seen the Ford but reviews say it is also very good too.

I also liked how you pointed out that Ford has been selling Lightning for 2 yrs already. It’s kinda like phones unfortunately. Every yr there’s newer better more advanced models. But I can’t afford a new EV every yr so presently my lightning is the original iPhone but still performs very well. Yeah that Chevy is better(not too fond of the Triangle as much) but I also paid like 40k less……. THATS FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!! Woah

Exactly how I feel. On the sales side too, Ford and its dealership networks really killed the sale of the Lightning from launch to end of 2023 by milking the demand, but I think they've learned their lessons (well, maybe not the dealerships), and sales are now picking up significantly. The new RCC distribution concept is pretty smart and serves the customer well. Farley is trying to move as a close as possible to Tesla's direct sales model as he can get away with, in my view. And yeah, that number you just quoted is one of the most powerful reasons why a Flash is in my driveway!

A small note; the Model 3 also had a refresh. That should drive an increase in sales as well as the incentives. As for Sam saying that the Lightning sold under 3k, the line right above it, the e-transit, was just under 3k. Perhaps he looked at the wrong line on that same chart you were looking at? As for the Cybertruck sales, what needs to be kept in mind is that the sales were fulfilment for preorders, some of which were done years ago. Now that those preorders are fulfilled, this is where we will see the Cybertruck demand numbers.

Sam has now commented and made no apology, retraction, or correction (I pinned it, and then responded) Your points are bang on, 100%. I didn't want to go down that road or I'd be called out as 'anti Tesla', but yeah, those notes are accurate. Cybertruck should do great. I hope it does. But facts matter. I am thrilled we all have ev choices - a lot of them - for the first time in history. That's something to celebrate, and I hope people will buy what works for them.

This isn't his 1st video that as been horribly inaccurate lately - and that's okay. We can get information wrong. But deleting comments and not correcting it once it is pointed out is another matter. I think he and I have a similar mission of moving the needle forward on sustainable travel and energy. I just think he's losing sight of his original intentions a little bit by doing a lot more attacks on brands rather than celebrating all the good that having this massive ev variety available to consumers does. I wish Sam all the best.

At first I didn't mind it. But I can't believe that no Tesla YT channel has commented on how the final version is a complete bastardization of Franz's original design. I know what you're thinking, "WTF?? Design? It's a freakin' triangle!" Yes, but take a look at shots of the original: Long, aggressive trunk, wide, angled sloping side with slight curve giving a bit of a shark feel, aggressive stance, impressive clearance, and brilliant truck and range specs... ALL gone. Now it looks like a triangular pug dog or pot belly pig. And none of the specs were achieved. Not one (PLUG: I did a video way back on it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZaylHmQltabm7s)

Even though most of Sam's statements were false, Ford did just halt production at Baton Rouge for a total of 8 weeks. It seems to be they are over supplied. I imagine their overall q4 final will far exceed 2023, but Ford needs more than 100% sales increase y-o-y; they need exponential movement to offset their massive new factory build & R&D/Skunkworks costs. They now have been told loud and clear that truck buyers won;t tolerate dealer exploitation and 'market adjustments' and the pricing now reflects the sweet zone. Ford will manage its way up, and we'll keep seeing starts and stops like this until the T3 roll-out, I'm guessing. But ev trucks are going nowhere but up in every segment by every manufacturer. As reviewers keep saying, It's the overall best value truck out there, ev or otherwise. Tghanks always for the excellent insight and comments!

@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 21 күн бұрын
The 2 GM products are outstanding for range and charging speeds, the two areas where the Lightning doesn't keep pace. Of course, I've just driven 15,000km and I'll double that before returning, and it hasn't been an issue. Keep in mind that to get those charging speeds you need reliable DCFCs that can deliver 250+kw speeds. The Lightning 'boosts' to about 180kw for about 8~10 minutes before slowing to the 120~150kw range, just like all ev SOC curve cycles. However, GM can hold at the fastest for longer, but also has twice the amount of batteries, so your wait times won't necessarily improve all that much. All a good thought exercise before buying. Silverado EV and Lightning were top of my list.
@brandonv8721
@brandonv8721 20 күн бұрын
@@truckedupevs the GM twins aren't getting much worse efficiency, so they are still getting more "miles" per min of charging assuming your charger can support. I believe the GM twins are doing that high speed charging at a still reasonably low C rate and i can keep the battery much lower % charge rate day to day. This does come at a cost in weight and money. I do think the lightening has a better cabin, less complicated suspension, is quieter, and probably a better day to day vehicle. It also takes F150 parts and aftermarket so it will probably be supported longer. The F150 frunk is so big. It should have most bugs worked out at its current stage.

It's a good point but not that much of a factor. If we look at length of days of inventory held, and insurance registrations in the us, the number might be back a month each quarter but it washes out close to even, which is pretty good being that inventories of ICE vehicles, especially at companies like Stellantis, are piling up.

Tesla went pretty quickly from offering their $80,000 Cybertruck only to reservation holders to having it available to anyone. Seems like they went through the reservation list quickly. It’s hard for me to be subjective as the Cybertruck doesn’t appeal to me but I do wonder what the true market for it will be. Right now the trucks I see rolling down the road cost the drivers at least 100 grand and it amazes anyone would pay that. It’s fascinating to see it play out.

He is wrong of course... but Ford did have trouble selling the F150 lightning earlier in the year. When I purchased in August there were about fourteen 2023 F150 lightnings in my RURAL area. These trucks were not selling. 2024's were piling up even more. Ford had to do something. On August 1'st Ford had added the 0% financing without taking away some of the other offers. Those fourteen trucks were sold within two weeks. I was looking at various ones and was watching them go bye bye! And I got one of them! All in all I got $14k off MSRP and zero % financing. Again, this was a 2023 model year, new, but sitting on the lot for a year. Deals on 2024's were not even close to as good. But since then, Ford has managed stock pretty well in my area and they are selling.

The Electric Viking has always been a Tesla shill, and he chronically misstates information about other EV automakers (oddly always negatively🤔). In terms of the other trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado EV is still ramping customer sales because the first, direct-to-customer model (the RST) only became available a few months ago, but I'm not sure that it will outsell the Cybertruck or Lightning until the LT trims are available. The Cybertruck has been a massive disappointment, though, because it only appears to be a ~2% conversion rate from the claimed 2 million reservations. Funny enough, that also seems to be the same retention rate for FSD (less than 3% of Tesla owners opt to keep their FSD subscription).
