NOW the oldest living Oscar winner! Her speech was priceless! Never a dull moment with Eva. Waterfront. Raintree. Northwest. Sandpiper. We've bean thoroughly entertained for close to 70 years of her brilliant performances. Don't worry. Things will get better. The only supporting actress to actually go up instead of down!

One would never know that On the Waterfront marked Ms Saint's screen debut. As Edie she is as much at ease before the camera as Brando and indeed, keeps up with him every step of the way. Her contribution to the finished film is immeasurable. Touching and passionate performance justly rewarded.

I met Eva Marie Saint at a screening of North by Northwest at the The Stanford Theatre in 2000. She was a true lady who sat through the entire film and did Q & A. When I shook her hand she asked where I was from. I said Australia. She spoke about having been there in 1999 for he 100h anniversary of Hitchcock’s birth.

Transportation was difficult then. Some celebs were living either NYC or LA. Plus the Academy then can't afford to buy air tickets to get their nominees and guests in one room unlike today where they have sponsors.

Cliff Trainor yes she was the lead role. But the studio had decided to put her supporting actress category because they thought she had better chance of winning that.

Someone enlighten me; did the Oscars hold the ceremony in different locations simultaneously? When did it start and how long did it last? Why did it stop?
@slc24664 жыл бұрын
Did a little research via the wonderful "Inside Oscar" book. Looks like there was a five-year period in the 1950's wherein the Academy Awards presentation had a New York hook-up at the NBC Century Theater to go along with the Oscar show in Hollywood at the RKO Pantages Theater. Starting with the first televised awards on March 19, 1953 (for 1952 films), Bob Hope was the host in Hollywood, and Conrad Nagel was in New York. On March 25, 1954 Donald O'Connor hosted in Hollywood and Fredric March was in New York. On March 30, 1955 Bob Hope was at the Pantages and Thelma Ritter hosted in New York. On March 21, 1956 Jerry Lewis hosted in Hollywood, and Claudette Colbert and Joseph L. Mankiewicz oversaw proceedings in New York. Finally, on March 27, 1957 Jerry Lewis emceed at the Pantages and Celeste Holm hosted at the NBC Century Theater in New York. After that, I think it was a Hollywood solo venture, starting with the March 26, 1958 awards at the Pantages.
