The first time I heard her voice was by chance on radio whilst I was driving thru a very busy CBD in Geelong. She was singing "Over the Rainbow". I literally started crying and had to pull over. I had no idea who she was...this amazing smooth dulcet velvet voice, l had to know more about this voice. I've been obsessed ever since. I am Brazilian. The story of how I discovered Eva Cassidy's work is worth a chronicle. I still lived there in Campinas... and I read on the Internet that a guy had been sentenced to death in the USA after several times of being on the run and being arrested in "Paraguay"... in fact, he was arrested in Brazil. And I read that this story of the convict (for having ordered the murder of a young middle-class American teenager) was told in the film Alpha Dog (which stars Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone...). I was interested in the film, downloaded it and went to see it. As soon as the film starts, the director used several photos of a child's life with his parents... photos of games, birthdays, amusement parks, etc... and someone sang OVER THE RAINBOW... giving a very special atmosphere to this beginning of the film. I really enjoyed hearing the song so well performed. I wanted to meet the singer... I searched the Internet for the soundtrack to this film... and I couldn't find it. But I had a friend who ran a blog about cinema. I sent him the information and asked him to help me find this soundtrack and find out for me who sang the song at the beginning of the film. He told me: "Wow! It's Eva Cassidy. It's been a long time since I heard anything from this girl and... etc and etc... Then I became interested in her... I downloaded all her songs on the Web. And then I went read about her life and everything. It's worth getting to know... quite a talent who was very young. She did a show in a nightclub where only about 50 people could fit... but the ticket cost 500 dollars and the There were only famous artists in the queue to get in... wanting to hear the girl.
