This is quickly becoming my favorite CrashCourse series ever! Not only is it really useful, but each episode seems to be building upon the previous ones in a way that makes it really easy to remember what we've learned. I only wish I could have had this when I was taking AP Lang & Comp 8 years ago…Thank you so much, and keep up the great work!

A common problem for readers of lots of books. Do you have any idea how difficult it was to learn how "Daenerys" is pronounced? When talking to anyone about the books, before the show came out, I referred to her as Dany, ALWAYS.

I pronounced it Her-moyne (rhymes with groin). Her-me-own / Her-my-own seems like an honest mistake but mine doesn't even make any sense phonetically -_-

I love that John has done his hardest to be politically neutral in these videos, because I feel that being skeptical about all politics, even ones we agree with, is critically important. I'm a pretty radical leftist, but I agree that faking videos and images does us no favours. There is plenty of real evidence to show Trump being a climate denier, or the unethical treatment of ICE on the border. So we shouldn't be distracted by arguing over fake evidence misrepresenting reality.
@cjc3636365 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. There are plenty of 'real' political facts to discuss. Mucking up the dialog with fake stuff just prevents people from forming real opinions.

Reverse image search is also a valuable tool for reattaching attribution to illustrations and webcomics that have been separated from their creators. Artists rely heavily on social media followings to make a living - so it's heartbreaking how often I see out-of-context art/comics posted by a random person, with hundreds or thousands of likes, none of which will end up reaching or benefiting the creator. We can all help artists by doing a quick reverse image search and linking to the original creator in the comments whenever we see this happen.

We are already in era where there is no way to tell if a picture or a video is real. Lateral reading does not always lead to a conclusion, as it is possible to have no evidence of authenticity or vice versa. Fake news, fake pictures, fake videos, gaslighting and other malicious activities regarding the subject (of reliability) are also so popular, that one can only refrain from making crucial conclusions from internet (or other) content, that is not well known as facts by the public. So 1. chill 2. check 3. if not confident of reliability, ignore

Wait a minute! In the fourth book, Hermione explains to Victor Krum how to pronounce it (I remember because it came as quite a shock to my father who read them aloud to us in Swedish, and had up until then pronounced it "HermiÅne"). More than just it's 'reliability', I avoid images and videos in general because of their raw emotional impact and ability to bypass normal intellectual filters. Images and videos can 'get in your head' in a way that text simply can't. All visual media has a limited (if not outright deliberate) perspective and you are limited by that perspective in your assessments.
