IMO, Jon Theodore is much more structured, but in a way that could still keep up with the rest of the music. He somewhat contained The Mars Volta's explosive creative drive in a more logical frame which added more "thought" to the music. But it's all really dependent on what you find valuable in a drummer.

I totally agree, he kept a framework for the otherwise insanity of Volta, none of the drummers ever worked because they were all trying to add too much, Jon kept it creative but tight.

Agree completely. He reigned it in which is a good thing for these musicians. They basically explode creativity and john popped some structure where it needed it.

@sjccompto At the time of that comment i preferred pridgen but after listening a ton and getting frances the mute i totally changed my mind. Theodore can groove twice as good as Thomas and he knows when to chill, which is something Pridgen doesnt have.

Pridgen knows how to chill - listen to the studio versions of his run with TMV. The point is that, live, by the time he was with the band, they all were playing frantically, making even the chill parts of the songs not chill at all. He did what Omar asked him to, basically.

I think you just play 16ths and accent the downbeats. It probably only sounds syncopated because of that displaced/groovy kick drum underneath.

@PoeticJustice05 Got me there! He actually seems like he would be a pretty cool dude to hang out with, just has a brash attitude about music from what I've seen in interviews. Cedric Bixler and Omar are probably more pompous than him though considering they've fired almost every drummer that's ever been in the band.

i first listen to the mars volta when thomas pridgen was already in. i was 9 i think, my dad gave me a Bedlam in Goliath cd for my birthday and since then i look up to thomas pridgen as a drummer. i love the guy and, in my opinion, he's better than jon theodore :P
