Just wanna warn you, if you're planning on doing King Crimson on your patreon page, there's probably going to be very little of the original material from their proper albums to use. Robert Fripp tries to keep a very tight grip on his stuff. So what you end up reacting to may very well be a remixed, rerecorded, unused take or any such thing besides the actual familiar song. Just FYI.

yep. in their hayday fricken 8-10 piece band all playing amazing prog rock in unison, sometimes in 19/16 time signatures. If you hate Mars Volta, you simply hate complex music. Cedrics voice isn't for everyone but all of the music behind it is stellar and frankly ground breaking at the time of release sans some greats like King Crimson and Yes, etc.

At The Drive-In had a big hit with "One Armed-Scissor" toward the end of my time in high school. That band split up into Mars Volta and Sparta. OMG Dudes! You are finally reacting to my favorite band and there is so much hate in the comments from the older generation. I am the first to say that The Mars Volta gets better with every listen. These two songs are the first two songs from their first album which is a concept album about their friend who committed suicide. I would recommend "Cicatriz ESP" from the same album if you are having doubts about them now! They have SOOO many more songs and they literally change up their sound on every album and almost every song! Please don't write them off!
@logan291sal
@logan291sal 4 жыл бұрын
A completely different sounding and more amazing song off of their 3rd album is a song called "Tetregrammaton" which is supposed to mean "the four letter name of god" or YHWH short for "Yaweh." This is a reference to religious fanaticism in South America which in some instances involved murder and torture. The lyricist encodes the meaning in cleverly complex lines. It's 16:41 long (lol) but it is really like 3 songs rolled into one arrangement. I guarantee you will rate it A or higher!

Excellent review. I’ve been in the Fandom since inception. Mars to me is one of the best acts of modern music. They can’t be explored piecemeal. They need the time and attention they deserve. I’ve heard others say it’s “organized chaos”. All of their sound is intentional. No missteps.

The vitriol is odd. Like it or don’t like it, but Andy and Alex gave the song an A+... ok you didn’t like it, fine. But it’s their channel and if they like something you don’t just say you don’t get it and wait for the next video. Easy peasy. As for the album, Deloused in the Comatorium needs to be heard as a whole piece. The dissonance is part of the vibe. The album is a story about Cerpin Taxt, a man that overdosed and falls into a coma. The sounds in Son Et Lumière are the ambulance ride to “the Comatorium”. There Cerpin has lucid thoughts inside his immobile body where he tussles with what got him there. These thoughts would become too much for him to handle and when he awakes days later from the coma he jumps out of the window. This album was inspired by an artist friend of theirs that had overdosed several times only later to jump off an overpass. But he was an amazing artist that painted and drew dreamscapes which the writers of the album used as their muse. It was a cathartic reaction to losing a friend and lesson they’d like to not follow. I wonder how many listened to this in good headphones? How many paid attention to the amazing bass played by Flea or insane key play by the late, great Ikey Owens? This band is not for everyone but they really are.

Don't get too into the lyrics. THey're very much like post-Sinfeld King Crimson, or any lyrics Jon Anderson wrote, where the goal of the words is to evoke an image rather than say anything concrete. There IS a narrative, and the lyrics do reflect that kinda, but it's a lot of effort to decode. Cedric's got a hell of a vocabulary, though, so you'll probably learn some new words as you decode their lyrics. Who said rock can't educate!?

They became instant favourites 15 years ago upon first listen. I was already knee deep into prog. Feels like they took the heavier bits of classic prog like Crimson and Yes and built up from there, mixing it up with some of the more aggressive and heavy Zeppelin and more modern punk stuff, and cranking it up to 11.

@@cbh440 I think Blackest Eyes, or Anesthetize - Live would be great starting points, kind of the basic recommendation songs but whatever. What Happens Now - Live is also great or Hatesong - Live, for introduction.

This album is phenomenal. A big influence on me as a musician. You should check out At the Drive-in which is some of the members original band. Also if you like this vocal style you might like the band Mew. Another amazing band.

I really enjoyed hearing Alex's breakdown on this. I have to tell you I am a bit flabbergasted. I don't mean to patronize but as musicians I would have thought you both were familiar with this. This came out in 2003 and maybe I don't realize how young you are or where your musical vocabulary basically starts. Most of your reactions have been 80s or before. i understand that isn't going to be as fluent a period of music except for pet bands like Pink Floyd, etc. Anyway, are you aware of Sufjian Steven's Illinois or Joanna Newsom Ys? What about Blood Brothers' Burn Piano Island Burn? This opens up an entire new window of chronology for you guys and I hope you respond to this because I can definitely turn you on to some shit.

I'm 64 this year, and was a RUSH fan from Day One. My sons, now 34 and 31, were both born sharing their dad's enthusiasm for the band, as well as others with virtuosic players such as Racer X. During their teenage years, our tastes in music began to diverge: My youngest son got into The Mars Volta in part because Racer X bassist, Juan Alderette, had joined that band in time to record "Francis the Mute," but I just couldn't connect with TMV's esoteric material. Bands such as Racer X, Symphony X, Children of Bodom, and Into Eternity--even Linkin Park-- were much more my thing.

ronforeman Very cool to read your post. Love that you came to Mars because of Racer X and Juan. Very sad news about Juan’s bicycle accident and coma. He’s going to have a long recovery but they’re updating his condition and it has improved. Have you tried any other songs after Frances the Mute? Their sound evolved over the years. You may like other stuff more. Try Viscera Eyes, Metatron, or Goliath.
