I could never be this patient with someone this infuriating. This person behaves as though all opinions are equal and unassailable and that we can't know anything, so it's just about believing harder than everyone else. The rest comes down to "that science thing is unintuitive to me, therefore someone is trying to trick me!" They can't analyze evidence by any but the most simplistic means, and assume that evidence is manufactured to fool them because they KNOW they don't have the chops to weigh it themselves, therefore assuming that nobody CAN understand why the evidence fits the current models. Unrelated, but I'm so glad I don't believe in reincarnation. I can't imagine being unlucky enough to wind up as someone who thinks like this and can never break free to see with any kind of clarity. People like Evan live in a terrifying world they fear because they don't understand it, blind to the real threats who will use their ignorance against their own interests while warding off everyone with their welfare in mind.

When I am introduced to a new subject or concept I'll look for the evidence that is available from reliable sources and attempt to draw my own conclusions and then I'll look at what the general consensus is from the experts in the field and if I find that my conclusion is different from what the experts hold the first thing I'll ask is what piece of information am I missing or understanding incorrectly and not that I'm correct. Guys.... you shouldn't have asked him about a snake in the sky... Always ask about a mundane thing. That way you can give a specific example of how we determine if something is true or not. simply ask this question. Q - Can a human being run above 22 mph? Then you can open a discussion about how we would go about determining whether that is true or not what would count as evidence and how would we verify that it was accurate. Depending on what they say you, might want to say how about 25 mph?, how about 27 mph? You can go directly to discussing how we would know whether it's true or not..... incidentally Usain Bolt has been recorded at over 27 mph, and hundreds of athletes have been capable of running under 10 seconds in a 100m sprint, there's video recordings and multiple verifications / calibrations done on the timekeeping equipment. The average speed of a 10-second 100-m is actually above 22 mph. You could then be cheeky to make some points. You could say, my sister can run over 30 mph, do you believe me? I didn't see her do it myself but I believe it is true because I read my cousins diary and he said that it was true. You could then make a really good point. You could say do we have good reason to believe that my sister can run in excess of 30 mph? - if they are honest they will definitely say no we do not have good reason to believe that. Then you could say. I agree we do not have good reason to believe that. Is it fair to say then, it is certain that she can not run over 30mph? A - no we cannot be certain, no we do not have good reason to believe so but we cannot prove for certain. And that is all Atheiest can say about god
