WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

They let this guy “look at the trees” for entirely too long. The dude is literally marveling at incredibly natural and explainable processes and attributing them to a god. He also continuously dodged when they brought up the salient points that other religious texts also exist. I love Katy and Johnny, but they let way too many opinions of this guy sneak into his arguments unchecked. They addressed some at the end, but he’s just gonna “agree to disagree” and live in ignorance because it’s comfortable

Indeed. God is nothing more than a medieval dream. Even in an infinite universe the possibility of a god is essentially 0%. (Not appealing to an absolute or I would have used that term over "essentially".) You see in a infinite universe we might find unicorns, That's because their possibility isn't essentially 0% its still close to zero but since it's not more or less zero like that of a god we can have a world were equine beget unicorns. while there is nothing to beget a god, and if something like a god would be materialised in space there would be to much mass and energy in to close proximity and before it could form fully would collaps into a blackhole. Besides, walking around hoping and wishing it doesn't excist would'nt make any sense. Do you walk around hoping and wishing leprechauns doesn't excist? i don't think you do. "In an infinite universe, does everything that’s possible have to happen somewhere?" There are a lot of subtleties in this question! The answer is _basically_ yes, but there are some sneaky assumptions worked into that. Right off the bat, a probability is always based on “priors”. For example, “the probability that it will rain today” or “the probability that a 4 will be rolled” are not, completely on their own, well-defined probabilities.

Listening to this “conversation” shows me how and why AXP has evolved the way it has, especially when Matt is on. If BOTH hosts are jumping in trying to give 5 minute explanations or examples, it is nearly impossible for the discussion to progress. One host has to sit back, listen to both sides and add in when a wall is hit or when there is an easy clarification that is being overlooked. This was too chaotic and all over the map.

@Nathaniel Elderwood merely an observation. @nickokona6849
@nickokona6849 2 жыл бұрын
The opening line illustrates a fundamental ignorance about what planetary formation is or what we know about it. The idea that he's trying to go for is: In the absence of absolute certainty, all beliefs are equally justifiable. And that's just not true. More over, the fact that anyone takes this approach at all is evidence in my mind that they are aware on some level that their beliefs are not justified. People who have good reasons don't need to appeal to absolute certainty. It is not equally likely that the universe came from a collapsing probability wave in the quantum vacuum and god magic'd it. We have evidence of quantum mechanics. We have a pretty good understanding of it. God beliefs are just takin it on faith. Believing without good reason/evidence or in the face of good reason/evidence against it. Oh and the why did god create the trees line puts the heart of it out there. It's for our benefit....... Abrahamic religions and notions of god are the maximally possible arrogant position to possibly hold. There can be no more arrogant a position to claim that you are the point of the universe. That all of the universe is made for your benefit. It cannot possibly get more arrogant.

The standard model for the formation of the Solar System (including the Earth) is the solar nebula hypothesis. In this model, the Solar System formed from a large, rotating cloud of interstellar dust and gas called the solar nebula. It was composed of hydrogen and helium created shortly after the Big Bang 13.8 Ga (billion years ago) and heavier elements ejected by supernovae. About 4.5 Ga, the nebula began a contraction that may have been triggered by the shock wave from a nearby supernova. A shock wave would have also made the nebula rotate. As the cloud began to accelerate, its angular momentum, gravity, and inertia flattened it into a protoplanetary disk perpendicular to its axis of rotation. Small perturbations due to collisions and the angular momentum of other large debris created the means by which kilometer-sized protoplanets began to form, orbiting the nebular center.

In essence, Newton's theory of motion and gravity, which is much more than "things fall when you let them go" explains how planets and stars are formed. Kelvin's question of where the power of the sun comes from, was explained by Einstein's most famous equation. Explaining the existence of trees is more elaborate, but Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection explained how Evolution worked, which decently informed biologists knew had happened, but not How.

Childbirth is a drawn-out, painful, life-threatening process, that used to go wrong real often throughout most of human history. If a god created that, it would be hard to argue that they're loving.

I did. And now the remaining two boxes have been left uneaten. It's almost like....we can use logic....and reason....to predict things.....based on evidence!
