"Is that centered?" One of my instructors always said "If you have to ask, it's not." Evan did great at centring on that cheap wheel, they aren't great! You both did so good for your first try! To centre, wedge your elbow into your hip and lock your wrist to the splash tray. Push forward with the palm of your dominant hand and use your other hand to keep it steady and then engage your bicep. Full speed for centring, then go slower the taller and wider it gets. And make sure your hands stay wet or the clay will stick to them.

as someone who's done ceramics for a few years but only started throwing last year, you guys seriously did really good!!! it looked as though evan's clay was too soft and katelyn's too hard. if you wanted to do this again, here are some tips I've gathered from my teachers! - getting the clay ready to be thrown is called wedging, and though the movements are similar to kneading, you're actually trying to do the opposite! wedging is to get any air pockets out of the clay, but since you guys are using air-dry, and brand-new-from-the-bag clay, there shouldn't be any air bubbles, and won't make your pieces explode :D - when throwing, remember to brace yourself firmly! plant your elbows into your thighs and don't let them move, especially when centering at the beginning! if you aren't rooted firmly, the clay will be moving you instead of you moving the clay. - it's ok if its not perfectly centered! it will probably get a bit off-center as you shape it anyhow. eventually, you will get it "good enough" to move on :) - keep the clay wet at all times, and having your hands coated in slip (the "gooey") isn't a bad thing! if the clay surface isn't coated in water while you're shaping it, the friction will throw it off-balance and make it much more difficult to do what you want it to. - re-centering it after you've opened it, like what katelyn did, is called collaring, and is essential! - and the faster the wheel is spinning, the bigger adjustments you will make. so when centering, the wheel should be spinning as fast as possible, and then you can slow it down once you open it up. generally try to avoid touching your piece if the wheel isn't spinning

Throwing on a wheel is actually super hard if you're a beginner, so you did really well for your first time! The only tip I'll give you is that centering isn't just getting it in the center of the wheel. It also applies to how the clay moves when on the wheel. If your clay is wobbling when the wheel is on, it's not centered. My teacher taught us to center by cupping the side of the clay with one hand, and cupping the top with your palm. Elbows should be locked and on your knees. I'm really small, so I had to lean over my clay and use my body weight to center. Some people make it look really easy, but if you don't have the muscles, the clay will kick your butt. I am so proud of how well your pieces turned out! You guys did great! I hope you guys do more, even if it's not for a video.

Just a couple tips from a dude who took two ceramics classes in art school. 🙂 4:43 pretty sure that katelyn is referring to the technique of centering green ware clay when you are trimming a piece before bisque firing the piece. Try smudging some clay in the center of the bat before putting the clay on in order to help stick the clay on better 👍🏼 20:37 try jamming your elbow into your leg just above the knee and or into your hips. It’ll help lock your arm in place so you can keep your arms more uniform which helps prevent wonky uneven walls. 22:59 if you kneed the clay more it 1) removes air bubbles that can cause a piece to explode in the kiln and 2) softens the clay a little bit more and makes it slightly more workable.

If I remember back to high school nearly 40 years ago (!!!!) you lock your elbow into your hip and use more the base of your hand than fingers to get it centred. Then pulling the shape up and pushing it down a few times helps to condition the clay to make it more workeable before creating any openings or shape. Katelyn’s clay seemed to be a drier/stuffer kind so would have benefitted from that I think - dispersing some water throughout it would have made it more pliable and she wouldn’t have had to fight with it so much. But I’m still really impressed with how you both did. And your final creations were sooo cute! Good on you Evan for persevering with your design. It turned out really cute. Congrats!

Fun fact I learned from my ceramic class 1. You knead clay so that there won’t be any air bubbles that will form so that when you cook the clay in a kiln it won’t explode 2. Centering it also ensures that there are fewer air bubbles so that it again won’t explode 😂 3. You use the wire tool to cut the clay object off the plate 4. Glaze will be like forever glue so always wipe the bottoms so that you won’t as my teacher said “have to use a sledgehammer to get off” 😂😱 But yeah it was a fun class we did horse hair pottery and multiple types of pottery enjoyed this video so much and it made me laugh when you guys were like how do you knead clay? 😂 oh and the suits aren’t overkill I had an apron AND a towel I wrapped on my legs and I still got super dirty. One trick with the pro wheel is to put your elbows in your stomach / chest area and lean your body into it to push. It helps keep your hands stable.

We have a ceramics lab at the Akron makerspace and its very popular. The better wheels are great but it does take some skill to get the clay to do what you want. Definatly take some classes, it's fun and you'll get to make some pots, or a mess, it's still fun!

IIRC, the reason your hands were abraded was because something called grog is added to clay. I think grog is finely-ground fired clay bits and it gives the clay "body," so it won't get all soft and slumpy from too much water while you're throwing. So the more of the velvety, gloppy "slip" (that's what that stuff is called) you get on your hands (and tools and sponges and clothes), the more you have removed from the pot -- and the higher grog-to-clay ratio, hence, the rougher the clay. Grog's great for novices because it makes the clay sturdy -- but yeah, when you're trying to center and you're forcing your hand down on the wheel, it's like 40 grit sandpaper!

I took two courses in ceramics in college and taught it in two high schools. For a very short time doing it, you guys did OK. I was surprised that the wheel Katelyn used was as good as it was for only $241. It looked good for starters. By the way, you will also require a kiln as big as your pieces. That could be expensive and require another building!

I just want to say, you guys actually saved me from suicide, about a year ago I was weeks behind on school work, my mom didn’t listen to me, my dad rarely saw me, and I hated school. I decided I would stab myself and sat on my bed with a knife the night before I went back to school after winter break. You guys had such good content (First candle vid) it distracted me until 6 AM and by then my family was awake and I just couldn’t manage to do it then. Thank you.

I'll be honest Evan, I've had similar issues with Poscas reacting weird to glaze. I got really into painting rocks over quarantine, and the poscas always needed more coats than you think because they went transparent with glaze, it was weird!

To be fair, I took an eight week class with unlimited clay and didn't make anything much better than Evan did. Centering is the worse. Just go up and down over and over again until the clay doesn't wobble. I think your main problem was not using enough water at the right time.
@canikostar992 жыл бұрын
From someone who's done ceramics for a couple of years, a quick tip is to dampen the wheel first, the water lets it vaccuum onto the wheel. If the wheel's too wet the clay'll slide around. Too dry and the clay has no incentive to stick (Particularly if you are using a masonite batt as it'll just cause the clay to dry out faster on bottom and pop off if the batt is dry.) Don't worry. None of the raging at the screen is directed at you two. Ya'll are doing awesome. Actual pieces first time using a wheel? With walls that are less than an inch and a half thick? That's better than average in beginner pottery classes' first day with the wheel, especially without a teacher watching what you're doing and telling you how to improve technique (First day on the wheel in my first pottery class was over an hour of getting a feel for controlling the speed of the wheel, how to center and open the clay and trying to bring walls up into a cylinder. Each attempt got cut in half so you could look at your wall thickness consistency and look at what how you can improve.) Word of warning, that kids' wheel is liable to break down within a few uses. The value of a pottery wheel lies primarily in the motor (the rest is basically a short table, a flat bottom splash pan, a speed control for the motor, and a surface for the motor to spin that preferably will not cut your hands) , as it should be water resistant (or well sealed against splashes) and able to endure hours of heavy/high-speed usage without stuttering or overheating (figure that even hobbyists are going to use the wheel for at least an hour or two at a time) If the toy wheel is hiccuping like that on the first day, then the motor is either very under-powered or not sealed against water (I'm leaning towards the former since it's not getting as much speed as you'd expect with a pottery wheel and what speed it does have, it doesn't seem able to maintain). I did notice Katelyn is primarily pushing with her fingers/bracing from her wrist rather than the elbow or shoulder while centering, but that's a minor beginner's issue (Try using the heal of your hand and bringing your elbows away from your body. Centering is basically pushing against a wall as thick as the diameter of your clay. Fingers are perfect for when the clay is nice and open and the walls are thinning, but have too much flex to push against something that may be 6 inches thick) My teacher's description of how to center was start with a finger down against the bottom edge of the clay to seal it to the wheel, then use the heel of your hand as a contact surface for the clay while using either the elbow or shoulder as the pivot for where the force is coming from (the weird swing arm with it's attachments on the cheap wheel is just a funky upside down substitute for learning to do this), and put the side of the other hand on top so you don't pop the clay off the wheel. Just keep pressure from both hands even and steady until the clay rolls to where it needs to be. Slapping to center is generally used on larger pieces of clay (when the cake shape will be both wide and taller than the heal of your hand) to get it roughly in position and round since pushing that much clay is generally a pain. But if you need to do the same on a much smaller bit of clay, you should pat or tap it with your fingertips since slapping it will likely just knock it off the wheel.

Great first throw, Evan. It looks great. Your instinct to add water was correct. you actually want a bit of a slick clay slurry on your fingers to help lubricate the clay on the wheel, and you have to throw it so that it sticks, that's why the tool kept popping it off. You're also supposed to wet the wheel first. T he kneading process isn't necessary when you're just starting out, but if you want thin walls, you'll need to. Kneading aligns the clay platelettes so that they hold together better when you're rising the clay. Lastly, your second throw had too much clay for the motor, which is why the motor was struggling, but you would be forgiven for thinking you needed that much because of the packaging. Katelyn: "Am I just not strong enough for this?" a bit of forearm strength wouldn't hurt, but you're actually supposed to brace your forearms on your thighs. you should be right in on top of the clay. get friendly with it. Get your hands wetter too. your clay needs to be really wet to be more workable. Clay is basically just refined mud. Use more water and use your legs, you'll get it soon enough.
