Our garage is getting way too full, so we’re building a shed for the stuff we don’t use (in the next episode). In this video we lay our first paver foundation so we have a place for our shed.

This is just superb, I've been looking for "how to build a shed foundation on uneven ground" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Damkietor Nonpareil Dominion - (search on google ) ? It is a great one off product for building better sheds and woodworking without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy got great results with it.

Hey now - I did extensive Google searching, and never found even ONE foundation for “sheds.” Orphans (my wife and I do sponsor a child in Columbia), old people, people who have lost homes to fires, storms, and certain life issues, homeless families, people addicted to tacos (really) and just about every other kind of foundation you could ever donate to. Is this “shed foundation” non-government? Can I get tax credit? Can I safely donate and feel good about myself? I actually already do feel pretty good about myself. Talk to me here - and how is K’s hand? I jumped! Excuse me, I have to go pound some nails in the dark, you have challenged me! Keep up the fun work.

I dunno. I think part of the appeal of this channel is that the audience gets to learn with the hosts. It makes the subject matter feel more approachable and less intimidating to a newbie. If two people who have never done something before, demonstrate their skill progression from "zero" to "reasonably competent" within the span of ten minutes, then it empowers the viewer to feel that they, too, can pick up a skill like this in a short amount of time.

Awesome! I saw that the end of the drainpipe of your house is pointing towards the freshly laid base. I'm not a plumber, but i'd imagine the runoff washing away some of the sand in the foundation. dang, I wish I had those plastic paver base sheets when I made the brick landing area for my trash cans on the side of the house...I just removed dirt, added/tamped sand for level, added weed barrier, then added brick pavers to be level-ish with the sidewalk. Those paver base plates would have been extra nice; but it is just a trash can pad. Pavers are better than the dirt that was there.
@PawOfRizzo

I used those paver bases years ago on a small area for pavers. Worked great, and still there. I will say the pavers seem to have a little bounce for a while, but over time settled nicely, but my pavers are just a basic patio extension. Since you are putting a shed on yours that should set the pavers and bases solidly fine. I'm a novice on dealing with pavers as well.

Use sod cutter shovel for removing sod (grass and its roots). Cut 12" wide passes and roll. If the shed is heavy, crushed paver base is a must for proper drainage, ground shifting, and weight distribution. I have made many paver bases and patio areas, and honestly, I hate to do that because this is a very hard work. That is probably why people charge for it $5,000-$25,000. Best of luck with your shed! Remember to turn the downspout extension away, so it does not flood your shed.

That is certainly going to be a fancy shed floor! Next time you need to dig out sod, get a square spade (a spade that is not pointy and that has a flat sharp edge) cut the sod with the spade, around the entire perimeter, then work the edge of the spade into the cut at a bit of an angle and push to cut the roots of the sod working towards the opposite edge. I think you will find that goes much quicker that way. Clearly your way worked as well as the results show. I'm thinking your way is far more entertaining than any hole I've ever dug! Also since your pavers are not going to be exposed to light, you would have been ok without the weed barrier (i think).

Handheld garden tillers are way more efficient. You can dig up 3-5" at a time with minimal effort and just shovel it away. My wife and I ripped up our janky, disgusting, weed infested backyard when we lived in Denver to reseed it and start a garden. We dug up so much crazy stuff. Probably 100+ Corona bottlecaps, an equal amount of pennies, two bullet casings and a 3'x3' 1/4" steel plate, plus the majority of what I think was a cat skeleton (reburied it) and several plastic toys. I used a shaking jig that I made for gold panning out of a 5 gallon bucket topped with a lid that I cut the middle out of and replaced with 1/4" mesh wired in place and an electric drill tied to the handle with a large allen key in the chuck and the trigger taped down. The bottom is filled with 1/8" holes for water drainage with an old t-shirt cut and epoxied to the bottom to prevent losing flakes. It worked well for isolating all the weeds, large rocks and junk out of the soil.

@@EvanAndKatelyn Our place in Denver was a bungalow built in the 1950's that had been a rental property for at least the past 25 years when our landlord purchased it. I'm sure it's seem its share of colorful residents. We had a handful of adult peach and pear trees in the walled off backyard and the craziest time was when I let out my two dogs on a late September morning and a homeless guy had opened our gate and was standing next to our tree eating a peach and filling his pockets with as many as he could carry. He almost got attacked by my two dogs until I managed to get a hold on them, yelling at him to leave immediately or I'd call the police. Clearly, the guy was surprised, scared and must have been super hungry. After he left I felt kinda bad, caught up with him down the alley and asked if he needed food or water. He said that he already grabbed like a dozen peaches, and apologized for that, but that some water would be greatly appreciated. He followed me and waited at the back gate while I grabbed him power ade and bottled water, enough to fill a plastic grocery bag. I also gave him a box of cheez-its, a can of coke and three cans of minestrone soup in a second bag. He was really grateful and apologized again. That was a really weird experience to start my day with.

I've always tried to figure out how to build a shed for my kids. I tried several plans but always got stuck along the way. I'm glad I found this Ryan's shed plans [ Go Here >>> *WoodBlueprints. Com* ]. It has made the work become as easy and simple as I never thought it will be. Thank you Ryan!?

Evan, I greatly enjoyed Bobiverse book 1 and I've moved to book 2. I love how mind-bending the cloning is with its playing with the idea of identity. So thank you for the recommendation, it got me out of a dry spell of boring books. Also pavers! I've only seen the DIY Home Renovation KZbin channel make a shed and he poured a cement foundation. What's the reason behind using pavers instead? I assume it's just potentially faster

Happy holidays! Suggestion: Look into making your own "aircrete". You can make your own pavers with it and it is like one twentieth the cost. It cam be so lightweight it floats. It also insulates. In fact, you might consider making your future boat out of it instead of cardboard. You can easily cast it into flower pots, benches, or whatever. It is so light weight, once you make something, you can easily pick it up and move it around. You can add color, plasticisers, rebar, wire mesh, etc. You can not use it for a house foundation, but you could use it for a kitchen countertop. I am building a stand up inside it RV trailer with it. Should only weigh about 400 lbs and only cost a couple hundred dollars. I have figured out a neat way of reinforcing it with window screen. There is a lot on the internet about it. the KZbin Honey Do Carpenter channel has a lot of videos on it, and a do it yourself plan for making the equipment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ3GepiKbLGcaKc. There are others on KZbin besides him. Just a thought. Happy Holidays..... PS I made some of that salsa today only I used the hot Vietnamese Garlic Sauce instead of salsa and it was awesome -- really good.

@@EvanAndKatelyn Thank you. I am glad you feel that way. I was thinking long term, not necessarily this project. There is a learning curve. Start off small. But it is fun, and not very expensive. One bag of portland cement yields 45 CUBIC FEET of aircrete, depending on how dense you choose to make it. You can make bricks and pavers out of it. But also barbeques and rocket stoves, dog houses, lightweight cat scratching and climbing structures. You can also cast it in your rubber molds. I am probably repeating myself. Sorry.

I've done this a couple times for a shed I've moved in my backyard. Cutting through sod (grass) is easier with sharp tools. I use a pickax because my soil is worse than yours (mine is dense clay) but the key is to use a crude sharpener to get the shovel/hoe to a vague edge so it cuts the grass. I prefer blunt soil working tools for some other tasks, because they don't cut into everything, and they are safer for those tasks, so that is usually how the store sells tools like shovels and hoes. But hand tools aren't like computers, you don't need more technical information to get good, as you continue to use them, you will get more efficient with the shape your body takes to use more force. I recently started teaching a new person gardening and I was surprised at how much slower they were, and how odd tools like the hoe just didn't work at all, because they couldn't commit to a swing, because they didn't know how to deal with the jarring impact if you hold it to tight. I dug a bit deeper than you did, because I was worried about uneven density of the soil. I also used water to help in the leveling, and who doesn't like playing with mud? The shed I' was working with had been torn apart by weeds growing up from under it twice, and the other buildings and foundations have damage from that too. The driveway was kind of torn apart by bamboo. And the blackberries came straight back up after being dug out by a foot and covered in weed blockers and 6" of gravel. But I think your setup should keep the grass at bay, it is better at playing nice with edges than bamboo and blackberries.
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 5 жыл бұрын
that's really interesting, had not considered a pick axe! yeah the jarring hit of the hoe was definitely hard to get used to - once we loosened things, the goings got a lot easier

Adorable video aside, please don't follow this tutorial, especially if you live in a climate that freezes in winter. You literally see the pavers moving in the shot of E&K tippy-tapping over top. As foundations go, you generally don't want flexibility. Simply compacting the ground and then applying sand over top is not enough. The base should be excavated 6-inches, then compacted stone dust, then 1-inch if sand for leveling, and finally the pavers. Better to look up videos by This Old House for the proper, long-lasting method. Roger Cook has done this plenty of times. If you're going to start a video by saying "we don''t know what we're doing" and it relates to home improvement (which often involves codes/permits), maybe that is a subject to skip completely.
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 5 жыл бұрын
we're not really putting videos out there for the purpose of it being an expert-level tutorial, our videos are more for the purpose of hanging out with us as we're trying new types of projects for the first time (so, more for entertainment purposes). We live in Texas so dealing with freezing wasn't an issue here, and no permits are required for a shed this small where we live.

I live in Montreal and I dug, only with hand tools, alone and it was mostly clay and rocks, 24 inches for my paver. The worst part was getting rid of the dirt, it was a 300 feet walk with the wheelbarrow. Even with all my work, the paver still $#%#$% moved after a few years! But I think it is because of the clay
@axelseelen
@axelseelen 5 жыл бұрын
They used Brock paver base which negates the use/need of the stone dust and is being used professionally by contractors including in climates that experience freezing. My wife and I have used this technique for all of our paver projects and they are all fine even after several years of midwest winters.

It really depends on where you live, with any build it’s usually best to see what your local Council (local government) states. Here in Australia, at least in Greater Melbourne Suburbs, we don’t use gravel or “stone dust” (I have no idea what that even is). Usually we just dig, pour sand and concrete slab for our sheds, irregardless of size. I’m actually quite fascinated by the building videos of other countries as it’s very different at times. Doesn’t mean one way or the other is wrong, it means that the work should be done to suit the location where it’s being built. And as long as they don’t store a few tonnes in the little shed, that pavement base shouldn’t be an issue. Though the issue with pavements that they can settle with time and become unlevelled. So keep an eye on it. 👍
