If you're doing more shou sugi ban you should consider stabilising the surface with boiled linseed oil rather than epoxy. Applied in several light coats it should give you a similar level of stabilisation and solidification of the surface but without the patchy look that the epoxy created.

My dad did this to our bunk beds in the 70s. But he used a fan type torch tip. The difference was he didn't burn the whole wood. He just did enough to highlight the grain, then sealed it. It looked good.
