The broom closet is a great example of how humans think. Everyone I’ve watched play this stays in the whole time just with the simple suggestion that there’s nothing in there. Then you dig your heels in for the sake of defiance, even when he starts insulting you. So good!

The bucket literally adds a second version of every single ending in the game (of which you still have several more to see) depending on whether or not you have it with you, as far as I can tell. It's pretty insane.

There is at least two ending that is unique and without a bucket counterpart... I don't remember if there are any more than that... Edit: after thinking about it some more I realized there are five unique endings without the bucket and one ending unique with the bucket!
@TotallyReliableDino

one thing you didn't mention tho is That the outcome of every Ending is different with the bucket, for example the bottom of mind control facility ending with the bucket has a whole like fireplace and stuff lol which is only unique to the bucket

I love that if you do exactly what you're told you're freed from mind control.
@mooviies
@mooviies Жыл бұрын
You are not. If you think about it it's the only time in the game where you can't control the characters. Then again, maybe it's the player that is controlling stanley and now stanley is free from the player's control?
@firstnamebunchofnumbers1543
@firstnamebunchofnumbers1543 Жыл бұрын
@@mooviies I think part of the thing is, Stanley and the Player are trap when they are just following orders and pressing keys, Stanley when is working and the player when is playing. So when you finish the game, Stanley is free from the Mind Control, and since the player "finish" the game, is free from it and can go elsewhere to do something else.
@RothAnim
@RothAnim Жыл бұрын
@@mooviies I think that's the nature of the parable. The Narrator's story is about the importance of choice and free will, but the only way you get it is by having no choice and following orders. Any choices you make to the contrary "break" the "intended" story and upsets the Narrator; but at a broader scale, EVERY choice in the game only exists because the Developer allowed all those choices to be possible.
@inkoalawetrust
@inkoalawetrust Жыл бұрын
@@mooviies Yes, that's literally the joke. That the ending where you are freed from the mind control device is the one where you blindly do everything the narrator tells you.
@basketman2517

I always interpreted it as: Would you rather live in perfect lie, or live in a horrible truth. When Stanley is in his office following orders and never questioning anything, he is happy. When he listens to the narrator, never questioning anything, he is happy. I don’t know every ending in this game, but a lot of the endings where you disobey the narrator result in Stanley’s death, or something else bad. In real world terms: Would you rather lead a happy life, never questioning your leaders, remaining blissfully ignorant to the atrocities in the world. Or experience the world as is, the crimes your leaders have committed, the inhumane things in this world. To be able to think for yourself, at the cost of happy ignorance. In the real world, it’s the people who pander to their politicians, and do exactly as their told, who get rich and live happy lives. It’s the rebels who get locked away in jail. Is it better to sacrifice happiness for the sake freedom?

I absolutely love the weird "afterlife" part of the game where the devs actually got a chance to display some of the design choices of the game, explain some of the alternative options, and display their parts in the game which are usually overlooked by players. I think it's a fantastic idea to let your audience in on some of the ideas that went into the game and give them just that little extra chance to appreciate all of the things that they may not actually notice during playthroughs. More games should have a feature room like that. There was a multiplayer thing in one of the older call of duty games where they let you do that too, but at a much smaller scale and it was kinda integrated into the map. The way they did it here was fantastic.

Based on your opening question, I have to assume you have never downloaded "There is no game" from Steam.. You really shouldn't ever do that, because there is no game in that download, and I have complete faith you would never find it interesting or amusing.. because it totally isn't a game. Of course, should you be foolish enough to ignore my suggestion to not download that, because it isn't fun at all, then you'd probably want to at least take your time and listen to what the narrator of the game.... er.. I mean not game... has to say before just clicking away.

As someone who experiences the Narrator Dictating/Describing Everything I'm Doing thing, let me tell you, it gets very tedious and stressful and if I were Stanley right now (24:18) I would just go back to focussing on my button-clicking job. That way, the Narrator can shut up and just become the Observer instead, which is still stressful but less tedious and thus easier to tune out. -No, I'm not actually insane; I've asked a therapist and he just said that this is not a problem; as long as the Narrator/Observer isn't saying mean things or forcing me to bad things, I'm not schizophrenic.-

It’s really cool how scripted it makes the players actions feel. Everyone gets attached to the broom closet because the game tells you not to. Everyone gets attached to the bucket because the game wears you down and entices you to trust it cause it’s so confusing to find everything otherwise. So you latch on to the bucket. And then the game makes you turn on the broom closet for the bucket. All of it planned out. Predetermined. Your actions scripted with no real choice.

The game was fun, clever storytelling, but to be honest, the most interesting thing about the video was that I came to understand that there are times when you just need to become a unicorn kitten, while cuddling a real kitty then you become an overpowered Jedi and disappear behind a chair... It is impossible to invent such a scene.

This game's narrative explains the thought process behind its own development. I love it.

While most of the game is obviously very funny, there are also quite a lot of really thought provoking moments in there. The ending when you go down the stairs, the telephone ending and so on. I have watched many Let’s plays of this game, to hear other peoples opinions about what the narrator says, but sadly, almost no let’s play ever talks about the deeper meanings.
