What is it about? Sorry about the dumb question - I admit I mostly listen to the music itself, not lyrics. I've always loved this one, but never pondered too much on what the lyrics might be about. And I still have no idea...

For me, this may well be the greatest vocal I ever hear and possibly the most perfect piece of music I will hear. As with the voice of Amy Lee, this song is impeccable in every way you can speak about it. Amy Lee has probably the best voice anywhere in the world today, maybe ever and an incredible ability to put it across. This song will bring tears to my eyes for as long as I care to listen to it.

Two close friends of mine died in December & January and when I hear this song I think of them. Such a powerful & emotive song. Very emotional & deep, but at the same time very calming. It just comes out of nowhere! We have this song that is quiet and overcast with melancholy, and just when you expect it to fade out, Lee crescendos. It's like real grief: you cry your eyes out, submit to depression. Then, out of nowhere, you feel this energy deep inside of you: an anger like no other.

The song was recorded during the 2001-2002 sessions and released as track #9 on Fallen. Amy said this is one of the songs on Fallen that she's proud of and it's the only song on the album that can make her cry. It is the only Fallen song that she has never performed in a concert, because of the personal subject matter. A part of the song was used in the beginning of a few live shows in 2003 as the intro to the song "Going Under". Amy played the beginning melody in a different key at the beginning of "The In-Between" from the 2017 orchestral album, Synthesis. This is what Amy said about the passing of her sister in a 2004 interview and how it inspired her to become an artist: “When that happened, my whole perception of life changed. It sounds stupid, but that was when I became an artist. The music is my attempt to heal myself. Things like that can destroy you, or you can get through it.” Lee’s gray-blue eyes fill with tears. Her voice wobbles. […] She says she won’t reveal her sister’s name, because it would be too weird to see it in print. It would upset her mother, she says, and - you never know - fans might try to find her grave. “My sister’s death taught me how short life can be, and it has driven me to achieve things. I have a list of 50 things I want to achieve. Not necessarily in entertainment, just personal goals. Life's fragility drives me on.”
