In an interview Miyazaki explained that the transformation into a beast is not caused directly by the blood, but by the fact that in every human being there is a bestial part that the blood awakens. In fact he said that the people who have the strongest will transform into the more terrifying beasts and that's why Lawrence, Ludwig and Amelia transform into those enormous beasts

For me, Ludwig transforming into a beast doesn't explain how grotesquely deformed he is. Comparing his design to other enemies in the game, he looks like the deformed scourge beasts in Yahar'gul, with legs and misplaced appendages sticking out all over them. By all accounts Ludwig was an honorable man whose chivalric code would not have fallen in line with what the Healing Church wanted the citizens of Yharnam to believe. Knowing full well the dire side effects of the church's healing blood, he discouraged people from using it, although he was forbidden by the church to reveal their dark secret. Although he was the first official church hunter beloved by the people, the church eventually decided he was more trouble than he was worth. They tried to besmirch his reputation as a diseased degenerate, because he refused to use the church's healing blood. When that didn't work, they arranged for the School of Mensis to make him disappear. For the citizens, it was a warning of what would happen to anyone who dared to defy or speak out against the church. Meanwhile the School of Mensis began their horrible experiments on him, fusing his body with that of his noble steed. He became so twisted and misshapen that he couldn't even survive. Unfortunately because of the curse of the Hunter's Nightmare, his suffering was far from over. He became a hideous accursed monster standing guard at the mouth of the river of blood, beneath the second nightmare church. But despite everything that had happened to him, his true mentor remained ever at his side, even in death. And that is how in his final moments, the guiding moonlight of the ancient sword he discovered deep within the Chalice Dungeons, restored clarity to his Human mind for one final battle.

What I love about him, is normally the berserk phase of the boss is the last part, while for Ludwig, it was reversed. He was berserking in the first half, but the second half he became more controlled, more fluid in his motions. This was such a great fight in every aspect. The location, the design, the voice, the fight itself, the music, and breaking out the iconic fromsoft weapon for it.

One of the details of the boss NOBODY mentions is the blood in the arena. Although it's a thin enough layer to walk on, it's basically a shallow pool full off it. The thing you see before the fight (The guy who says "Help us") isn't a monster, he's trying not to drown in the blood and is covered in it
@jacobwatkinson6071
@jacobwatkinson6071 Жыл бұрын
Another detail around that which I love is the skeletal figure banging on the sealed gate further down the river of blood, outside of the boss room. It’s as if they are trying to escape and banging on the gate to be freed - perhaps pleading to the Healing church who they trusted, seeing as the gate mirrors the ones sealing of Cathedral Ward from Central Yharnam. So it’s as if Ludwig and the Hunters were just unleashed on the populace and slaughtered in their thousands while the Church barred the gates to seal themselves in.

It seems that the Hunter's Nightmare takes a great many inspirations from a story of when Buddha gazed into Hell. He could see down through a pool of water all the layers beneath him, but was invisible to those below, and he saw there a river of blood, where sinners were tormented, crushed to death by a horse headed demon, only to rise again without escape. So we have the river of blood, we have the snail woman dropping from an unseen higher partition where the Fishing Hamlet exists, and finally we have Ludwig, stomping on the condemned.

I feel like many of Fromsofts bosses will hold that same iconic status once they've aged a bit like Sephiroth has. FF7 is almost 30 years old now and has had so many other games and media based around it so it's had so much more time for Sephiroth's legend to built on. I think many Fromsoft bosses will be viewed the same way in 10-20 years time.

I will always be emotionally attached to this boss, and in particular to his ost, because that's the reason why I got to know fromsoft's games. That's a pretty nice story I like to remember from time to time. Years ago, I had never played anything, I wasn't into gaming at all, and was talking with the guy I just started dating about music genres we liked, when he sent to me Ludwig's ost, thinking I would have liked it. Well, thank god he did or I will probably still be sleeping on this masterpiece, I was so captured that I asked him to give me more context about this piece, to know if what I imagined listening was anywhere near the real story. And here I am now, I have learned how to use a joystick, loved a lot of soulsborne games, I'm close to get the platinum on bloodborne, and me and that guy are planning to get married

My first playthrough of Dark Souls 1, I was blessed by the loot gods and the Undead Burg black knight dropped the Black Knight Sword and that sword carried me through the game. That weapon has become my favorite. I know that moveset. I used it on so, so much. And I liked Bloodborne, sure, but when I found the Holy Moonlight Sword, and then it had the greatsword one-handed moveset, it was like I found an old friend. I know that swing speed, that arc, I know the thrust. It just all came together. I can't even remember what I was using that playthrough, but I went and ground out everything I needed to get my sword up to par and then...sure, it wasn't easy, but I knew I could handle the rest of the game and it'd be easier than it would have been.

I think making Laurence a Cleric Beast in the DLC was a big mistake on From's part. There's more than enough in-game evidence to support that his physical body is the Blood-letting Beast, however because From decided to reuse a Cleric Beast asset for his fight in the DLC instead of the Blood-Letting model, everyone seems to think he turned into a cleric beast. It makes way more sense for him to change into the Blood-letter because he was never really a proper cleric of the church, he just founded it in order to achieve his personal goals in surpassing his mentor Willem at any cost.

It does make more sense that we find him in the hunters nightmare grand cathedral since thats where his skull is found in the 'real' Yharnam I dont have an issue with him being a cleric beast from a gameplay perspective since he still feels distinct from the one in central Yharnam, but your point about him not even being a proper cleric is a valid argument (if its true). I used to speculate that maybe theyre the same exact beast and that the weak cleric beast is his real world body while the flaming Laurence is his cursed and tormented form in a state of purgatory. Sadly that theory doesnt really add up the more I think about it lol

@@mrzero_7883 it’s not a theory and can be supported with both in-game evidence and through cut data. It’s a cold fact. One of Bloodletting Beast’s ID tags in the game data is “Founder Beast” and Laurence is the founder of the healing church. There’s dialogue for Gehrman where he’s sleeping and calling out to Laurence. Begging for an end to the dream. The entire goal of the game is to acquire a newborn to satiate the moon presence and put an end to the curse. If you follow the intended route to fight Queen Yharnam, you pass through both fights with BLB. Story-wise, he and Gehrman planned to put an end to the hunts, so this makes sense because Laurence would have traveled through the dungeons in order to take the queen’s baby, but ultimately never made it as he succumbed to be beast before he did. Laurence’s physical head is the beast skull in the Grand Cathedral, it’s literally the same head with the same cleaved scar on it, you touch it in order to see the flashback with Laurence and Willem. Everything in Yarhnam is the physical real world. Everything outside of this, the Nightmare, the Frontier, Mensis all exist in a plain outside of reality. So the human Laurence skull and the Cleric Beast form is only there because it’s not his physical form. His actual body is in the Dungeons and Grand Cathedral. What we see in the nightmare is just a manifested projection. You can think of it as something akin to his consciousness being stuck there. Just like Mergo is stuck in Mensis and Orphan is stuck in the fishing village. Their bodies, their physical forms are dead, but their consciousness live on in the nightmare. Now As for all the cut content that further supports all this, there isn’t two BLB. That’s just one. Literally. It’s the same boss model, They just made the head on the headless one invisible because originally, that fight had two phases. The first phase he would speak to you, but all his dialogue was deleted, however you can still glitch the game to play it. Unfortunately because the audio is gone, it just randomly plays patches lines. Laurence has two VA credited in the credits. One did the human Laurence and the second did the beast Laurence. This credit existed before the DLC was even planned. So he clearly voiced some version of him. After the fight you would touch his freshly severed head and get a flashback with him and Gehrman talking about their plan to find a way to end the hunts. Now notice both times you touch a specific beast skull you get a flashback with Laurence being the common denominator between the two? That’s because it’s him. He’s the Bloodletting Beast. You’ll also find that despite being a chopped up boss fight From still reused this idea for both the Guardian Ape boss in Sekiro and the Ludwig fight in the DLC.

I just started the video, I don't believe the title is true, I do not believe Ludwig made Bloodborne iconic. I'll update this comment at the end of the video UPDATE: excellent video as always. Don't get me wrong, he is an iconic boss, top 5 designs in Bloodborne, but I don't think he made the game iconic. Imo, the ""boss"" that defined Bloodborne is the Amygdala. It's one of the first things you see in the game once the blood Moon rises and you're able to see past the veil, they are scattered through Yharnam ever present. And their names are in reference to us losing our minds to the reality of the night I think perfectly encapsulates Bloodborne. As a boss (moveset, fun, lore, music, everything you said in the video)... Ludwig #1 best FROMSOFT boss no contest. The Amygdala fight is easily missed and is not a good fight. But seeing that ya meant mechanics, lore, etc etc. and the fight itself.... Yeah, Ludwig is very iconic. (Maria/Gherman being a close 2nd)

As of right now Sekiro is the only game that lets you fight only the bosses over and over if you want. That’s what’s missing from all these games.
