It's basically Shinji's apologies for having screwed it so badly, he was supposed to save mankind, instead he ended up being the catalyst of Armageddon. While every human being (or living creature) melt into an orange soul soup, which is being collected by Rei/Lilith who Is in God mode, one soul, one and one only, refuses to join in, that's the only soul Shinji was really looking for, Asuka. And Shinji screws it again, even worse than before 🤷🏻‍♂️. In the end we got stuck in a loop. Well at least we created a new Goddess.

Suicide is evil. A beautiful song was used during a scene of humanity's demise/suicide. I get that some Eastern and Gnostic traditions portray the end of individuality/merging into a collective spirit asthe ultimate goal, but even if that is one's belief, the end of Evangelion involves the murder/suicide of humanity.
