I went to Ft Jackson for Basic Combat Training in 2007. I'm not religious. I clearly remember spending all morning every Sunday, on my hands and knees, scrubbing the floor of the barracks with bleach because I chose not to attend a religious service. Had I chosen to attend a religious service, I would have spent that morning eating donuts and drinking coffee. I remember thinking it was total bullshit, but I wasn't willing to compromise my beliefs for a temporary comfort.

Yeah, as a Christian I and a member of a military service I don't find evangelism in a foreign nation something that is would work. Some places have had people with a weapon in one hand and a set of beliefs in the other coming to "visit" them for centuries and they convert to save their lives. I don't find that to be a strong basis for faith. On Sundays I tried to cover duties afterwards for the other guys at least as long as I was away. That usually was only 30 minutes or so, our padre was real good at get straight to the heart of the message.

Animals have empathy, look at apes assisting their injured, Dolphins swarming to try and help their dying pod member, or even your house pets. I know for a fact my cat is fully aware of my emotions and that he responds to them all differently. He often looks hurt when I'm in deeply negative moods and will seek me out to try and cheer me up; if that's not empathy I don't know what is.

These recruits aren't going to get brainwashed by going to church during bootcamp. The ones that were into it before enlisting will continue going and those who weren't will be exposed to it. Some will like it, but most will simply see it as something to do on a sunday while at bootcamp. In the fleet, a small percentage will actually attend any type of service. While deployed, that number is even smaller. Chaplains act more as counselors than 'clergy' to the majority of enlisted.
