Since Israel's inception, the Haredi - ultra-Orthodox adherents of Judaism -have been exempt from the country's military conscription laws. But their growing population, coupled with their high unemployment rate and dependence on state benefits, sparked outrage within the country's secular majority. After years of demanding that the Haredi share the responsibility of serving in the armed forces, the Israeli government passed an unprecedented law in March 2014 that requires Haredi men to serve in the military.
The decision resulted in major opposition from the Ultra Orthodox community, from violent protests to religious leaders demanding that no one should comply. VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members and leaders of the Ultra Orthodox community as well as soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda, the IDF's Ultra Orthodox Battalion, to get their take on the government's decision.

Fearing that joining the army would take them away from their religion is like screaming my belief is weak and it wavers at every turn. Look, I wouldn't go out of my way to join the IDF either - but these guys are a trip and a half. No government assistance is kind of extreme, they could do something like with other countries that have a separation between citizens and permanent residents. So no voting, you can't run for government office (maybe for a community like the Haredis, they can only be allowed to run in districts where they're the majority), and REDUCED but not no government assistance. After all think about it this way - in Israel women serve 1 year less than men, but they don't get any reduced legal benefits because of that.

Barely any ideology calls themself ultra anything. Extremes are inherently a negative thing and the opposition usually labels you that.

Lol they don't call themselves ultraorthodox, they call themselves haredim. But Judaism has generally been divided into three sections, reform, conservative, and orthodox. There is a large variety ranging from the most modern orthodox and the most religious orthodox. Therefore, haredim are called ultra orthodox. You won't find haredim who disagree with this label as it is very accurate in its description.
