I prefer the Remo Powersonic now that I have heard your recording of the two heads. I always used the Evans Emad on my previous kits but for my current recording kit I'd go with the Powersonic. Thanks so much for posting this video and taking the time to provide not only the comparison of these two drum head products, but also for using an internal and an external mic. I was looking at product descriptions for these two exact heads, so the video answered all my questions. These drum heads are expensive and there are so many product options out there from the main manufactures, it makes it difficult to know which one to go with.

I'll need to give the Remo Powersonic a try. I like that flat thud with the high end attack, which is how I prefer to tune my kick drum... no overtones, just a crispy high end attack with a deep articulated punch. If Remo makes the Powersonic 16" size I'll buy it. My kick drum is a 16" former floor tom converted into a kick drum. I play in a garage-rock band and most of our songs are fast old-school 60s punk, but I inject a modern Metallic kick-drum sound into our music, borderlining Thrash and hardcore punk for our faster songs.

Please before you go and purchase a power sonic head heed my warning. After playing Evans heads for a while I ventured out and wanted to try something different. I had never found a snare head that Evans made that I liked so I tried a Remo Black X and I haven't used a different snare head since. After that I looked into the power sonic, all I played before was a super kick II and then switched to the emad 2, which I still play to this day. It was when they first came out and due to the similarities with the emad, I bought one (power sonic). I tuned it every which way, put it on 2 different bass drums, played it in different rooms, used different beaters, Tried every combo with and w/o the dampening thing. It is the deadest head on the market. It has no attack, tone, punch, anything. So I took it back and got another emad 2. Long story short I wish I had read the reviews before I bought it, it would have saved me a lot of time and effort. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The EMAD is a single ply head. EMAD2 is the two ply version. The powersonic is two ply and quite a bit thicker, so you can’t really compare it to the Single ply EMAD. I’d go with the EMAD if I was playing jazz. Powersonic for really everything else.

@julianboyd87198 жыл бұрын
I don't wholly agree with that. It depends on the drum, the resonant head and the muffling used. Double ply can sometimes completely kill the sound of the drum

I think figuring out the relationship between the tuning of the batter and resonant heads is going to affect the sound a lot more than which head you use. Neither of them sound great in this video and they are both really good heads with more potential than shown here. Batter head seems much too tight but I guess everyone likes it different.

@a.m.creativ8 жыл бұрын
+Gausgovy Directly centre can actually give you a choked sound. A drum will always resonate and sing best if the striking zone is just slightly off centre.
@ToomanyFrancis8 жыл бұрын
Adam Correia But hitting off center gives the ring more overtones, and kick drums are meant to sound beefy and fat, not musical (depending on the style, but I would never use either of these heads for a style that would need a long musical tone)

George Koretski he is using a 20" kick drum
@1dudecrush7 жыл бұрын
George Koretski also, fun fact. the greatest tone and most pouch are actually found just slightly off center. it's much more apparent on timpanis, since they're so large, but bass drums are big enough that it applies as well.
@jaygodin7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the sound you want. Marching snares and concert snare will play mostly dead center, unless going towards the rim for effect. Marching tenors will play towards the rim for a timbale like sound(as will timbales). But marching bass drums and concert bass drums will hit dead center. Yes timpani are played off center, in a similar reason to timbales, to get that ringy tone.

Long story: I have played both an Emad and Powersonic. Emad is better. I use an 18” kick. I had 2 bad experiences with the Power Sonic’s quality I put one on my kick hit it once and it cracked. Brought it back and exchanged for another one and the same thing happened. One hit with my kick pedal destroyed the head. I am what I would consider to be a normal to light player so I was shocked. I also bought these heads several years after I had experimented with other heads and I just did not care for the sound. I give you my word that I did not abuse the Remos in any way, they were just shit quality. Emads are fantastic. They are superior in sound and durability.

@thejamman5558 жыл бұрын
Well firstly, thanks for the kind words! The sound comes mainly from the tuning/muffling, and with decent but affordable mics. I tried to capture the attack with the e602 and the warmth with the x1 and blend the two together.
@METALUPYOURCULO8 жыл бұрын
how is the close mic so focused like it captures nothing but the drum in comparison to the external which captures more room whenever i mic close it sounds like the external even in a small room
@thejamman5558 жыл бұрын
The e602 is only 4 inches from the batter head, pointed directly at the beater to get most attack. If i only had 1 mic I would place it just outside the porthole if you have one.

He has em tuned differently, the versatility of the head is unparalleled, he left the PS3 wide open while using the muffling ring on the emad, and he used an EMAD1 ply instead of the EMAD2 (which I prefer and gives way deeper tone, fundamental, and less sustain even when left wiflde open.
