In this video I show how I tune my bass drum to get a nice punchy sound. I'm currently using a 22" Remo Coated Ambassador head for the batter side, and a 22" Remo Powerstroke 3 Logo head with a port on the resonant side. The drum muffling is the Remo Drum Muffling System (remo.com/product/drum-mufflin....
In the comments please let me know what famous drummer's bass drum sound is your favorite.

You know what’s way faster is using a drum dial. I know I like my batter tuned to 72 on the dial and the front 75 and it’s absolutely perfect every time! Takes me 10 minutes to tune my bass drum from scratch. I really like Smelly from NOFX’s bass drum sound.

Correct. Drum Dial can be a big help.

Great helpful video. Thank you. With regards to bass drum sounds, i like Keith Carlocks wide open sound.

Not knocking John but Mr. Bill Ward had an amazing kit, even his kick drums. 😊

Depends on applications, live settings, etc. Most small gigs with microphones are better off having the kick dead, plenty of muffling. Otherwise, they can cause feedback and ring. Definition wise you can't beat a tight sounding kick

Very true. Unfortunately, a lot of rooms here in Vegas are built with electric kits. Obviously much easier for the sound man to control.

After 30 years of live playing, it's usually the same response via FOH or band sound engineer. "Can you stop that ringing please via the kick? It's never changed in all my years of gigging. Unless you have a tonne of outboard effect and a patient sound engineer, then it's always going to be the same response.

I think it ranks up with sympathetic snare buzz. I've toyed with muffling the reso head, but I always end up hating the sound. 😆

@KirksDrumRoom it's a very different process, a big compromise to how you want your kit to sound over practical use live. I love the sound of a wide open kit, but in a pop, rock setting, it's not practical
