This was probably the most concise demonstration of kickdrum heads I've seen. The top three manufacturers were represented, in an equal play pattern. I was very surprised by Evans' EMAD Calftone. Remo guy here. Clear/Coated Pinstripe is my default choice. These days I really enjoy Coated Vintage Emperor and Clear Powersonic! And of course Aquarian’s Super Kicks are absolute classics too

This is a great video and a lot of hard work went into it as everyone said. Amazing to have figured out a groove that demonstrates the sound without getting tiresome after so many repetitions. The only thing that trips me up is, when they switch to the other snare, I always go "whoa which kick head is that?? That sounds awesome!!"

Excellent comparison, thanks. This confirmed my choice I made long ago: Evans EMAD Clear, thin ring. If you want to achieve the lowest fundamental frequency with good attack and good control of sustain without choking the resonance, the EMAD delivers it. At least it has for me for 10+ years.

and it's durable as hell. I have an EMAD on my kit for smaller gigs, and out of lazyness I'm playing the same head since 15 years and it still delivers/has no significant dent. Amazing how long these last. probably 800+ shows and rehearsing every week for 15 years is crazy to me.

I used to be full on Aquarian and was also a dealer. I had several phone calls with Roy about marketing (him advising me). When they moved production to Mexico, and Roy's presence began to diminish, my interests went elsewhere. But, I gotta tell ya: to me and generally speaking, Aquarian takes the blue ribbon for kick drum sounds.

Great comparison. Lots of choices. Including colors, pillows, felt-strips and impact pads. There was a time when I would have been happy with any of the sounds. Today, I prefer the Remo C.S.Dot for open sound. Emperor coated for a more dampened tone. Pick your flavor to match or contrast your snare is my advice.

Great video. So many great sounds from all three manufacturers. I guess it depends on what sort of sound you’re looking for. In most cases drummers want a fat bottom end. The only exception is jazz, where the kick is used completely differently to the rest.
