For a backyard mechanic it would be a lot easier to replace the hose from and to the tank. It cost about $20 for 50 feet so let's say you spend $60 on the hose, it's still a lot less than you'd pay for a diagnostic and labor and parts.

For us do it yourselfers that don't have a smoke machine or vacuum pumps and gauges how should we go about finding leaks. Is using positive pressure an option?

great question. FYI, a small machine operates under the concept of positive pressure with the help of smoke for a visual identifier. I've used positive pressure before with the help of a sound amplifier and headphones. It really works well as long as you can have a nearly silent space to work in. Most shops are always too noisy for it to be effective. You simply pressurize the system and then move the end of the listening devise around until you can hear the air escaping. But again, it has to be really quiet.

Do you use compressed air or an inert gas for evap testing? My smoke machine recommends using Nitrogen but I haven't heard anyone doing that.

Didn’t even need to hook up my smoke machine….looked at the hoses underneath near the cannister…was half expecting to maybe see some evidence of a tiny bit of rodent gnawing. I’ll be dammed if 5 inches of the fuel tank vapor hose was gone…I guess chewed off.

I had done evap diagnosis for decades and this exactly how its done, its really not hard You just need to understand why the computer set that code, I MUST confess back in 96 this system boggled my mind and made me question Humanity! GREAT Video!!

I smoke tested my PT Cruiser (it is 4 cyl) and found smoke coming out of two places: 1. The EGR transducer. 2. The joint where a metal tube from the EGR meets the TB, (it is like a rubber seat kinda like a counter sunk O ring) I re-seated where the metal tube connects the EGR to the TB and tightened it: now no more smoke there. There is still smoke coming out of the transducer. Is that normal? The only code I was getting was a p0171 (bank 1 too lean.) Do you think either of the above is the problem with my p0171?

I suspect my Ford Ranger has a vacuum leak. I replace all hoses leading into the junction box and repair the cracked gas filler neck, replace fuel filter/fuel pump, replace Idle air control valve and evap purge valve. The charcoal canister had a missing vent cap but was plugged. Is there a possible leak underneath the truck? Vacuum solenoid switch to transmission. The truck does not idle well once its warm.

@MrHvm1985 try inject air into evap system with no more than 10-11 psi, and close of vent valve. Use stethoscope without the tip, but the hose only to listen for hissing sound as you follow the evap system route. Smoke-Pro is affordable smoke machine selling at ebay, but shop around. Great machine. Good for intake, exhaust, and evap leak diag.

Now hardware stores carry a one gallon weed killer and the hand held wand has a tiny pump.A five gallon bucket and smoke of your choice and you've fixed another problem!

You can use a scanner and go to bi-directional controls and close the vent solenoid. This will test the solenoid for leaks and pinpoint any other ones

I been having check engine light on 2003 grand caravan due to evap .i replaced like 4 hoses w/ new clamps and code comes back from large to small leak to p1494 some malfunction. so i dont see any more leaks whats the next some? i dont know how to test the canister or purge valve

bench test the purge valve it should be either closed or open I usually use a 9v battery to jump power just make sure the valve is closing properly as for the canister I was told to visually inspect it it should not have any liquid in it as long as the purge valve is working like it should

I realize I'm talking about a different piece of equipment than what's shown in this video, but something I like to do to verify EVAP repairs is to either command the system to seal w/scan tool or shut off the vent valve, calibrate the flowmeter on the EVAP smoke machine, and pump nitrogen into the system. If the ball stays at or below where you put the red arrow after running nitrogen through the calibration orifice, you're good to go.
