To make a skin for a ship you don't own, there's a 'Hull Selection' button in the Studio at the bottom left next to the Save / Save As buttons.

With what others are saying, after you click create design at 1:33, you will see hull selection in the bottom left corner, like in 1:36

It's an awesome feature. However, I personally think the custom skin market is going to fail heavily. It's far too expensive to create the skins. It's a massive risk of cost if no one buys your skins. The profit margin won't be worth it either. Then because of how expensive it is to create them. People will just look for skins they like and create it themselves for less than the store price. The only exception to this will be super rare colours and patterns. This system will not go well imo.

People can't even preview textures, materials, patterns, colors, without already owning them. You have to send billions of ISK on these design elements with no idea what they look like, and just hope they turn out okay. How insane is that?

"Hull selection" button on bottom left of screen when you're designing a new skin lets you change hulls without being in the ship

CCP's decision to charge real money for player-created ship skins is seriously messed up. Instead of making cool skins themselves, they dumped the job on us and then slap a price tag on every use. I don't mind buying better textures or effects for PLEX, but for example, the Tier 9 Orca skin costs 160 PLEX. Are you kidding me? They want us to pay real money for something we create ourselves? That's beyond greedy. Sure, having an option to sell skins on the market for ISK or PLEX makes sense. But making us pay to use our own designs? That's a straight-up cash grab. We might all say we won't fall for it, but let's be real, we probably will. You try a texture here, an effect there, and before you know it, you've burned through a ton of ISK=PLEX on skins. This is a game, not a money pit!

They took a chapter from bethesda's idea with mods. Charge for shitty game but give the players the ability to patch it for them. At least mods are free.

Think this is roughly x20 times too expensive, and it should use Evermarks for at least part of the process - that currency is now looking really surplus to requirements. Folks are going to make a couple of skins only for their favourite ships, then leave it alone as too expensive. If they really wanted to get folks to use it a lot, then should have been 1-5 plex only … and I think paradoxically that would have resulted in a larger plex churn. This is too evidently a money grab. As for people buying your creation… no, not unless it’s a required corps uniform or perhaps a very high visibility content creators skin. Otherwise nope. Just think - none of these elements self evidently have value, but they cost a lot of real money. Priced for less they would have sold much more, and given they have no actual production cost (colours are just pixels) there isn’t a reason to keep them pricey. On plus note, it does mean the existing skins for ISK market isn’t going to collapse, as I had anticipated it might.

I also love the skin editor but I wish there was a way to overlay stencils so that you can create cool patterns and logos. Maybe in a future update 😅 gamename: itsch3ckmat3

I have 300 billion and I wouldn't waste so much isk making a skin.. it will never take off. Cool feature. Too expensive and money graby..
