Just for peoples info theres also plans in the works, tentively scheduled for early next year at present, to vastly increase the number of ships and modules Alpha accounts can use and also increase the amount of skillpoints they can make use of. See here - www.twitch.tv/videos/180208500?t=2h25m00s - from about 2hours 25 onwards for details.

so a game that takes forever to do shit that everyone else has a bot doing for them since the game is so slow you cant even tell the difference between the two? and when I looked up the "biggest EVE war ever" it didn't even look like combat and all the comments complain about how it wasn't even playable? what a complete shit game lol no wonder its only a few thousand losers playing for 15 years. they are afraid to play an actual video game.

I also felt a bit confused starting out. I realized It's really not that hard to understand. Much simpler than it seems. You only need to focus on what matters. The bigger obstacle I hit as an inexperienced player was realizing I didn't know what was useful and what was a waste of time. I mean I had some fun in combat, but I couldn't figure out where to 'go' like what like I didn't have solid goals because I didn't know what I wanted to do. Maybe it's the fact that I avoided PvP, but I ultimately didn't feel like paying or playing anymore

The tutorial teaches you everything you should not be doing in EVE - i.e. how to waste your time, not have fun and hate the game. You could in theory, as a new player, not know the first thing about the game but rise to the top of corp within a week. With LIES and CHARISMA... RL charisma and RL lies. You wouldn't even ever have to leave your spacestation... hell you wouldn't even need to download the game. Just get teamspeak and eff with everyone.

@stankobarabata2406
@stankobarabata2406 3 жыл бұрын
Not as much of a chore if you're a social person who likes talking to people. You can accomplish a lot by just talking, actually. It's how I got free BPs, free ORE frigates (the basic mining ship) and a Battleship-class Apocalypse. The gameplay isn't anything to write home about, but then again this is more of a chill game most of the time, unless you're working in low-null sec. I didn't, I worked mostly in highsec, and I spent most of my time mining Rakovene (mining bad but Rakovene makes easy, safe and lots of money for beginners). Sadly, the psychopaths will most likely drive you away, as many have committed their entire free time to this game, which I simply can't do.
@voidimperial1179
@voidimperial1179 2 жыл бұрын
Research the corps you plan on joining. I joined a small corp that occasionally did shit and was fun to hang with but then they decided to merge with one of those giant nullsec corps. Forgot the name. No idea if this is something they all do or if it was just this one, but they treated EVE like a second job - complete with "leave of absence" forms and taxes. Burned me out in a week. Also lost contact with every single one of the people I was in a corp with.
@AveSicarius
@AveSicarius 2 жыл бұрын
@@voidimperial1179 Why would you want to simulate the corporate drone experience in a game? That type of job burns people out extremely quickly in real life, I can't imagine trying to find some escape in game only for the same systems to be implemented by people. It sounds almost like people who work as corporate drones wanting to feel what it's like at the top, so they implement the same systems in an environment where they actually have power. Madness.

I pity the poor sods who just grind away in highsec or become F1 monkeys and burn out.

@@Codex_0613 The Mittani is the head of Goonswarm Federation/ CFC/ The Imperium, the largest and most powerful group in the game, which makes him the most influential person in all of Eve Online by a country mile. During an Eve Fanfest many moons ago, while he was also a member of the CSM (Council of Stellar Management, a player elected group of representatives supposed to communicate with the developers on behalf of the playerbase) and very drunk, there was an open mic thing, and he went on stage and told some troubled and suicidal dude he had beef with to kill himself. While wearing a wizard hat, which is very much a meme at this point. This led to his removal from the CSM, and he was also banned from the game for a few months.

Eve is a great game, if you don't really have a life. I don't mean that negatively either. If you don't have anything particularly interesting going on in your life and are financially stable enough to afford to throw dozens of hours a week on a game.. it can allow you to peer into a possible future for humanity from different perspectives, even the boring ones. It can be very entertaining/immersive and the fact that there is enough freedom to have politics and RL scale drama only adds to that immersion. However, you'll have to deal with psychopaths a little more often than you would inrl.
@leathery420
@leathery420 6 жыл бұрын
The thing that gets me about the political realism in EVE is that, salesmen, Corporate hitmen and some politicians play it almost as a way of honing their ability to get what they want through negotiations ect in a world that holds weight, but without fucking up their's or other's life if you take a risk and it doesn't work out. One of the politicians who was at the embassy in Benghazi when it was stormed by rebels was reportedly talking with EVE friends up until they were right out side killing the guards. Very cool concept for a game, but you really do need to put as much time into it as you would a whole hobby or job. The persistent world is cool, but it's pretty hard to play any game where if you go away for a week or month you won't recognize it when you get back. I imagine burn out is a pretty big problem in the playerbase.

@@moonasha Sean Smith (Vile Rat) was not a diplomat in R/L he was the tech guy in a diplomatic facility. He was a diplomat in game, reportedly a very good one. I think it was Mittani who published his last chat text where Smith was concerned about the local police taking photos of the compound. The State Department knew there was trouble brewing in Libya and ignored Ambassador Steven's requests for more security but even moved them to a less secure facility. His pleas for immediate help during the several hour attack were also ignored by the State Department even though there were trained operatives a few minutes away, adding up to yet another "Death by Clinton" episode. There is a lot more to this but what I state here are undisputed facts, not conspiracy theory. I am a veteran I am still appalled that the evil one got away with this and even came within an inch of becoming the leader of the free world.

The last I heard about this game was that they released a expansion where the environment fought back. Some big NPC faaction that started to wage an actual war against everyone including the players. That sounds interesting on paper, but in practice everyone hated it because the NPC don't need sleep or toilet breaks. It could still work if you gave them rest periods every 12 or 18 hours and make fighting them off or hunting them down profitable.

I assume you're talking about Triglavians. I've read that despite what you told, some people were crazy enough to declare a crusade against them. CCP more or less admitted that their content roadmap relied on Triglavians winning, and railroaded that result. That was the content? Special "Pochven" region. How did that work out? I'll have to refer you to the Pirate Software's "EVE Offline" -video.

I've played EVE since 2006, off and on, taking a couple years off here and there. The game has come a long way, but ultimately, there is no mitigation of large-force dominance over essentially every meaningfully lucrative thing in the game. I've dedicated a lot of my time to solo play in EVE, and pretty much maxed out what is reasonable to do. I've built POSes for moon mining and reaction farming, done wormholes, all the planetary interaction you can stomach, manufacturing, invention, exploration, etc etc etc. It made me pretty wealthy for a solo individual, but, very poor when compared to someone who plays with a successful very large corp. I've joined 0.0 corps, a wormhole corp, and industrial corps. All of them are pretty fun and lucrative, but ultimately fragile unless you link up with the big boys and get into the territorial conflicts, which becomes very time consuming (think calendars and alerts and mandatory multi-hour deployments, etc). My biggest reason for not playing the game more is that I don't really like joining groups of more than 10-15 players. It's just not how I play and I don't have the time to invest to do it properly, and, EVE is really aimed at corporation and alliance play. The wormholes make this a little more accessible, but, lack of moon materials in wormholes sort of puts a horizon on the wealth generation possible in wormholes. Basically, to summarize, and I'm sure no one will read this, but, EVE is dominated by very large alliances and meta-corps (as in, all of the people from popular website A, or people of country B, ganging up into a 1000+ man alliance). These alliances have iron-fisted control over the most lucrative systems in the game, and thus, the wealth to purchase things like T2 BPOs (which are no longer distributed by the game, but still functional, and are money-printing items that are absolutely ridiculous to leave in the game, tbh). I've had a lot of fun with EVE over the years, but there's a definite ceiling that you hit until you are willing to immerse yourself more into it by joining a huge alliance. This video was a great review of the game, I just wanted to throw in a bit more perspective from someone who has done just about everything the game has to offer and get the message out there to avoid disappointment if you don't see yourself joining a thousand man alliance eventually... you *will* run out of things to do. If you have tons of free time and really like the idea of being in a huge army of people who share an objective, EVE might still be the best MMO out there, and if you are fine with having an MMO that will give you a few solid years of gameplay until you are forced into that, also best space-based MMO hands-down.

I read it. I’ve always been interested in it, but never had the stability, staying in one place long enough, machine to play it, and time to even get the ropes. But I’ve heard of things inside the game, politics and wars that had actual affects on the real world even if it was just people noticing. I have always been really interested in how people can take up roles in the game like politician and such. It’s a very fantasy idea to have a sort of second life where you can try some new field or craft, but I think the biggest drawback is the learning curve and unknown. If you wanted to join the game and do some off the beaten path niche, would you still have to learn the massive amount of bs in the game? I’ve never liked wow, but I also see that game as something impossible to start playing. They have their own language essentially. This reminds me of that. Too massive to attempt to start playing.

I was one of the two low sec miners and I can confirm, its not worth it!
@TheReaverOfDarkness
@TheReaverOfDarkness 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah CCP borked the mineral maths and made Pyroxeres yield half as much nocxium as Jaspet. This mistake remained in the game for years, preventing low-sec mining from getting off the ground. When they finally fixed it, they introduced Jaspet to high-sec at the same time. They also gave low-sec the newly-improved Gneiss and Dark Ochre, but they just give you improved yields of high-sec minerals. You still have to mine in null-sec to get zydrine and megacyte in decent quantities. So ultimately, due to the logistical difficulties of transporting null-sec ore to trade hubs as well as the high mineral yield of high-sec ores, you can't mine lowsec for increased profits or for your own manufacturing benefit. It's nearly always better to just mine in highsec. If they'd just remove Jaspet from high-sec, low-sec mining would be a thing because high-sec would stop producing so much nocxium.

I remember seriously trying to get into EVE some years back. I think you have to be a certain type of person to stay and enjoy EVE for the long run. I wasn't that type of person and had an absolutely bloody miserable time playing it. That said, if it floats your spaceship, all the power to you.
@stankobarabata2406
@stankobarabata2406 3 жыл бұрын
I'm the same, minus the miserable part. I actually got contacted by a friendly GM who gave me a free ORE ship, blueprints for a Tormentor, and some other stuff like weapons and salvaging shit. I found a mining group that was super friendly and told me quick ways to make money by mining Rakovene in highsec. In general, my impressions with the community were stellar, though I don't understand why the GM helped me. Maybe it's out of friendliness, or desperation for new players. However, as I played for 2 weeks I came to realise the game was practically made for people who have nothing else to do in their free time. I'm not that kinda person, I like to switch around games so as to not burn out. I couldn't commit that hard to EVE, so I gave whatever little stuff I had to the group I met, and wished them luck and uninstalled. It's not a game for people who play games for fun, that is for certain. It's a "second life" of sorts.

I knew I'd be revisiting this video after watching Fred Knudson's video on it, and after watching that, it is hilarious to me to hear all that rich player history summed up as just "giant nerd fights that appear on the news". Jokes aside, I'd actually be curious what Mandy's thoughts are on the game today, if they've change, if he's indifferent or what.
@steelytemplar
@steelytemplar 11 ай бұрын
Fred's video and Mandy's kind of compliment each other, I think. Where Fred mostly recounts a lot of high-level, major events, which were primarily experienced by a very small number of players but had a significant effect on the game's reputation and legacy, Mandy really goes the opposite route and describes what the average player's EVE experience is going to be like. Also, Mandy is hilarious.

@@karandras2854 I tried playing half a year ago. I admit, I found a lot of fun in the game. Maybe it's my trader/industrialist mindset, along with how easy the game actually is once you get the hang of it and how off-brain you can play even the combat, but the game does it's intended purpose fantastically. You can meet friendly people who are actively looking for group play, and people are pretty helpful, especially to newbies. Even a GM messaged me, asked me if I'm enjoying the game so far, I said yes, and he supplied me with BPs for a ship and an ORE frigate, wished me luck and told me to ask him if I have any problems. Like, ridiculously friendly. I found a mining group within the Corp that I got recruited in that were very friendly and coordinated too. It made you FEEL like part of a miner group, we had a big ORE hauler escorted by a fleet of those small ORE frigates, we mined Rakovene fields so efficiently and quickly we had to switch systems every day. And generally it's what you'd expect out of a massive MMO like this, lots to do, and a lot of "jobs", if I can call them that. But then there's the psychopath shit. Suicide gankers, politics in Corp chat, people who literally demand you play the game in every spare moment of free time you have (one of our squad leaders was like that, dude played the game nonstop, I've never seen him offline), and generally people taking it way too seriously. Like a second life, like you said. Now, I can appreciate dedication, but I like playing other games and my interests shift. I burn out on games I play consistently. Heck, I can't play World of Warcraft for more than a month continuously without burning out on the game for a year almost. And since that obnoxious squad leader basically started driving the friendly people away, I just quit then and there. I didn't want to be bothered to go find another group, mostly because this one found ME and I was happy with them, and I was weary of liars and schemers at that point.

Something that needs to be made very clear about "safe" hi-sec space : while in most MMO game will physically prevent you from doing any harm to players in safe zones, this is not the case in EVE. You can kill and be killed in highsec. Perpetrator is guaranteed to have his ship destroyed and sec status lowered, but it still is allowed to do his bidding. That makes it boiling down to the matter of price-reward balance. And this is I think one of the biggest difference between EVE and other games.

The problem with EVE is that it's a boring job full of sociopaths who will take the first and every opportunity to either scam you, blow you up for the same reason as people climb Mt Everest (simply "because you're there"), or make you a part of their vassal racket. HIghsec is for noobs, griefers, and people who really aren't playing the game. Lowsec is a comic example of when the risks outweigh the rewards like being offered a tic tac for jumping into a pool of raw sewage and rusty razors. Nullsec is just one or two guys running around as mafia kingpins who's only interest in you is as an attack drone to defend 'their' 'empire'. This isn't the game for people looking for constructive cooperation, a quiet game to settle in to, or even a game that wants you to play it. You log in, you flip your skills, you log out and play a more engaging game instead.

Lowsec boy here. Overcoming difficulties and fighting for your place together with 10-15 man small size corp is quite an amazing experience. Agree with risk/reward thing, but it also somewhat keeps big blocks/botters from coming and ruining all the fun.

Agree with you ... Used to do exactly that each day after work ... Log in tick a new skill ... Log out and play fallout. Until it became weeks to research anything so I stopped bothering even .

Thomas Linssen I believe they're saying that the person who decided to leave EVE in the first place was stupid for doing so in the first place, bringing down the game's collective IQ until they left. However, they played EVE in the first place, so they're smarter than your average WoW player, bringing WoW's colletive IQ up just by joining. I believe that's the joke.

No joke, I played Dust 514 religiously since Closed Beta. The game was extremely flawed but the concept of it was mind-blowing at the time, and it was my version of video game crack. No other game has scratched that FPS/RPG itch since then.

Be me Join a very small corp (4 people, I'm the 5th) See the corp chat Something's weird, one member just blasted the T3 ship of the GM He said "So, will you pay?" Akward silence "X left the corp" Asked the GM wtf was that ? He told me it's a dude joining "friendly fire corp" to extort money or shoot members on sight GM paid because you can't kick someone outside a space station if player isn't docked This is Eve !

I came here from your SC vid. Being an ex-eve 0.0 player from 2003 to around 2010 and currently a fanboi of SC I am still amused how you manage to to perfectly walk the edge of the blade while describing a game. Usually I don't know where is the location of the Like button but I had to google it because I could not hold myself of pressing it. Very well said and very well made video. I don't remember when was the last time actually any youtube video could hold me for half an hour(unless it is a reveal of SC aplha 3.0 :D ). Especialy about the game I'm already done with. And especialy with the game I'm already done with and in which I achieved a lot and was good at. And especialy with the game I'm already done with and in which I achieved a lot and was good at and the last time I played it was around six or seven years ago. I am really surprised you got under 100k views and under 7k subs. Again. Very well done. Pressed that red button (had to google the location also).

Nature Boy I just hear some of these horror stories of people playing this.. they invest tons of actual money into the game, and then, they just get killed and have to start completely over even tho theyve spent all that money. :( ya know? Something like that would destroy me. Because I get INVESTED HEAVILY into my games.. ya know? lol :) and to just lose it because of one battle... i dunno.. correct me if im wrong, but isnt this game like that? You can literally lose everything just because some jerk who decides he is bigger and stronger than you and wants to destroy you?

Its not a pay to win game. You can spend real money and get plex to convert to ISK in the game, so you can buy better ships and fittings, but if you suck you still suck so someone in a cheap fit can blap you just the same. If you intend to just spend money to get to the end game then forget it, you will ragequit in no time

Worry not mate. Yes, you can lose all your ingame money, but that's if you are careless and carry all your stuff around. Say you grind 2 months for a shiny ship, spend EVERYTHING on it thinking you own the galaxy now, then 2 minutes later some kid in a cheap ass frigate kills you because you don't realize your big ship won't hit a fly with those giant guns. Yes, that hurts. But it's a lesson we all learn the hard way: "never fly what you can't afford to lose". But that's ok mate. Grind more and get your revenge some day, at trust me, it will come. I made hundreds of millions just by listening to Eve Radio and answering quiz questions or winning 1vs1 duels between me and other listeners. Not to mention that many corps will help you out and reimburse your losses. There's nothing to fear really. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be financially stable. It can however be addictive and you CAN lose a lot of your time and social life. There were times when I played 18 hours a day. I wouldn't get out of bed. My GF was dropping a plate in front of my keyboard and that was my lunch and dinner. Well.. lunch was at 13:00 when I woke up and dinner was at 3AM. Sometimes I set alarm clocks to meet the corp members in the middle of the night to defend ourselves. But that's extreme. I did that for 2 months. Then I quit and came back more mature, years later and now I just play 10 hours a week. Maybe 20 at best. Give it a shot man. i guarantee that it's at least unique from anything else you ever played and probably will ever play.

Back in the day going into null and/or wormholes as a noob was the scariest and most awesome thing. Hell, even mining was fun with a few other players... I can't even imagine what EVE is like today but then again I haven't played it for about eight years.

I used to mine a lot, but ever since my maelstrom got OP for lvl 4 missions it feels like mining takes forever :( I haven't found a serious mining corperation with boosts, that isn't a gaint "shoot me" sign for gankers, either. Or else I'd consider going for an orca or exhumer doing some WH stuff lately. high risk righ reward. Doing it for 5 days now, but lost a astero and a stratios in the last 2 days :|

As an on and off EVE player for 10 years, I endorse this review. The game requires an investment of time and mental effort to understand and find what you want to do, but there's a reason it's had a loyal following for 20 years. The PvP shakes and feelings of accomplishment when you actually manage to learn something or achieve a goal are unlike anything else out there and can get you hooked for years. It was the first MMO I tried that, instead of giving all players a linear progression path, delivered on the promise of creating a virtual world in which you can choose your role: trader, miner, treasure hunter, industrialist, pirate, cartographer, spy, soldier, con-man, mercenary (except for bounty hounter, doesn't make sense when all players are immortal). And you won't just be choosing what abilities you'll get in your skill tree, but potentially have a completely different playing experience depending on which activities you pursue. It's an acquired taste and not for everyone I suppose, but well worth trying out if you have the attention span for it.

A very nice, comprehensive review.... Well done... But please, don't hate mining :P I'm an industrialist for 5 years now... I did high-sec, low-sec, null-sec and wormholes.... It is fun, because i like spreadsheet, the grinding the creation part of the game... Instead of constantly destroying everything, but hey, war is good for business.... As for the "F1 and AFK".... i press F1 and I kick back and manage my spreadsheets, I put in new research, new manufacturing projects, managing my corps loot trading etc etc etc... So instead i sit on a station and do that i "earn money by earning money" :P
