I remember when I first started playing electric guitar I got a small practice amp. I thought that the bass knob was for bass guitar and turned it all the way off. I then saw the treble knob and thought: "Guitar is in treble clef, I need more treble!" so I cranked the treble all the way up. I was a big fan of Soundgarden and Tool at the time, which drove me to cranked the gain all the way up. It sounded like a beehive. After playing it for a while I decided that the amp just sucked.

Yeah, the problem with this instruction is that he's going for a heavy Marshall tone from a Fender amp, and those two amps are voiced completely differently. Marshalls are made to have more tight boxy midrange, and Fenders have a characteristic airy, mid scooped tone. These small solid state Fenders are actually really easy to get a decent *Fender* Blackface tube amp sound. You just have to crank the bass, keep the treble about halfway or less, and the mids between 2 to 4. And keep the gain/preamp set to *just* where it starts to overdrive a bit. If he was going for a Stevie Ray Vaughn tone instead of metal and AC/DC he could have made it sound really decent.

A tip for metal rhythm (that would have helped me out when I started): To tighten up the palm muted sound (mainly the low end), use less gain on the amp but add an overdrive pedal in front of the amp. Classical overdrives used for this are the Tube Screamer and its clones which may be a bit expensive. Experiment with the overdrive's volume/drive, less is more. ;) Often even used with drive on 0 and neutral volume. Turned my crappy practice amp into something I could live with, but this technique is also used by professionals with high-end amps.

You get mostly overdrive from gain, if you cut the speakers you get a Fuzz effeckt. Distortion, overdrive and fuzz are very different elements... and if your "little" amp is open at the back try to set it next to a wall, if you like the sound, cover the opening in the back. Also set up the hight of your pickups! Great vid for beginners, 20 years back this would be pure gold for me!

I play Megadeth with HM300 and TO800 with a bit little different amp eq settings while playing 'into the Lungs of Hell' which has 4 guitars, I play 2 of them and also tapping. Good work!

I stretched my budget a bit and got the Fender Champion 40. It's really loud for a bedroom practice amp and a substantial upgrade from that 20 watt model for a hundred bucks more. My volume is stuck at 4 and it's even louder with an overdrive pedal like the BB Preamp or Tube Screamer. The clean channel has great clarity and pretty close to a tube amp. Skip the 20 and go for the 40, this gives you the option to gig with it at small gatherings or events.
@stigohara6593
@stigohara6593 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent review, you are so right about the treble, this is the weakest area of virtually all solid state amps, with the high or treble knob up you will notice a nasty toneless (square wave) fizzy sound, not all solid state amps have this problem several like Peavey (trans tube) and Marshall have their own tube emulation circuit that actually works pretty well. Don't forget that most budget amps have really cheap nasty speakers, this affects the tone and volume more than anything else, look for used JBL, Altec or EV speakers, whatever your amp any of these will make your amp at least twice as loud in real world use, don't forget the speaker is the weakest link in any system.

Cheap amps seem to universally have shitty distortion, but I'm always being impressed by a lot of clean sounds I can get out of practice amps. I've been playing with a Fender SP-10 practice amp and I love the clean sound I get out of it. No gain or mid adjustment, so I have to boost the volume and lower my volume knob on the guitar to drive amp less if I really want a crunchy tone out of the amp.

All of the components are battery powered, so I can essentially take the entire combined unit wherever I want. No need for power outlets, AND !!! that all pretty much leaves me with a whole band at my fingertips. Multiple drum patterns available on the GX1on, can layer guitar loops with the G1xon, AND !!! the ZOOM unit also has a Bass emulator that you can also loop. Band In A Box, hell to the yeah.

I agree with rhy hood below but get some advice from a seasoned guitarist before buying anything; you can get a blackstar ID core for $100 new and a used Epiphone LP for about the same in excellent condition- the amp sounds good and is plenty to begin with, same with the guitar, keep saving , keep playing and before you know it you'll get there, just do not give up it does take time. Persistence and hard work is the key- work hard and give yourself time to "get it." you also could buy ac decent used acoustic and just start on that, then buy electric once you make progress (this may be the best way because you'll develop much greater fret- hand strength, but not necessarily speed

Clannad Cryer I agree with William Martin on the Blackstar ID Core amp and Epiphone guitar. The $100 Id Core is the ID Core 10 and it is an excellent value. I use one for practice sometimes. Epiphones are great, especially if you like Gibson guitars. If you prefer Fender style guitars you may want to look for a used Squire. Do you have a preference? I started playing over 35 years ago and I am still having lots of fun. Hope you have fun soon too!

I think Fenders have a Great clean sound, and make a great pedal board platform. I've got a Hot Rod Deluxe and a Frontman 25R, I love the Tube Sound Hot Rod, but for most jam nights it's too loud, plus it's really heavy to pack around.( I'm 65 so it's not the easiest for me) The Frontman on the other hand is nice and light for me. For small venues it's a decent volume level amp, for rythm playing, I play through a Zoom G3 for the efects, (Tube Screemer,Tremelo and delay and it sounds pretty decent.) I've since changed the speaker for a Eminence LEGEND 1058 10" Guitar Speaker 75-watt 8-Ohms, and putting together a pedal board with a vintage Morley Vol. Pedal, a Dunlop Cry Baby, EHX Tremelo, EHX Holy Grail Nano, a Mini Tube Screemer, EHX Mel 9, and a EHX Switch Blade, I'm still waiting for the EHX C 9 to arrive. I'm hoping the new setup will sound better and be more versatile...

The amp I use was for my fender bass, but I use it for both cos it sounds so much better than my first amp. The only downside is that it doesn’t have any gain, it only has volume, bass, mid and treble. So I have to use my pedal

it's so weird in that i like music with bass. Lots of bass. I'm a hip-hop head from way way back. I love r&b and funk too. Guitar i stick to the blues mostly, with some Mayer, Prince (learning that), George benson thrown in. i just hate that trebley sound of many guitars. Bridge Pickup? What's that for? I like it full, not muffled but i always crank up the bass on amps. I have like this modeling amp and every setting, up goes the bass. Not saying i'm right. it's just my ear. Maybe that will give me a different sound than others though.

I'm from a very different background (=not hipphop), but also like bass to max, probably because my modelling amp has only a 10" speaker, which laks some serious guts :-)

Your advice and steps taken in this demo are good. The "starter" amps need tweaking as demonstrated to lessen the muddy and the shrill. However if you set an amp to chainsaw imitation channel, there is nothing you can do to make chainsaw sound appealing. After your good efforts at improvement, you still had that annoying chainsaw buzzing. Do a demo starting with clean so that we can actually hear the changes/improvements as they occur. I would love to see that demo because I'm running cheapo amps always. I need your experiences advice.

I tried the same amp last week to practice a little bit, and ended with exactly those settings! However, I tried that sound over a backing track and it was almost useless, I wasn't cutting enough, but at least it wasn't that itchy kind of sound that cheap transistor have.
