How many times do we see kids that havent entered high school yet that can play a musical instrument better than most adults could ever dream to. Natural ability or God given talent if you believe in a Big Guy. Same thing with athletics or intellectual abilities. The joy of Starting Strength and regular training is the only person's ass you are kicking is your own!

Hershel Walker is another example of Genetic gifts offsetting inefficient training. Walker managed to get big and strong by pretty much bodyweight training alone, as he disliked weights, though he did well on them when firced to test his poundage by his coaches. But if he had trained with weights like they did in the 70s and 80s, he would have been stronger, faster, snd more durable.

100% correct. My favorites sports teams are afflicted with injuries. Training staffs are ruining players with volume, olympic lifts and plyometrics. Players are leaving lots of money on the table by getting injured on the field because they dont do any training, just exercise.

You can NO WAY prove that players are getting injured on the field due to what they are doing or not doing in the weight room. Athletics - especially football, wrestling, basketball are risky sports that result in injuries due to the nature of the sports themselves. So you're telling me that if a Starting Strength Coach (or even Ripp himself) took control of the Alabama strength program that injuries in all sports would significantly decrease? PROVE IT.

@@tunnelrat78 So if I bring up names of guys who do stay on the field, despite having poor training programs, you'll probably say what Ripp says, "Well, he's a freak athlete, so that's why he doesn't get injured." So when a guy, who is on a crappy training program, gets injured, you'll say, "Look at him! His injuries are due to his stupid training program!" But when a guy, who is on a crappy training program, DOES NOT get injured, and he's shown to be very durable over a long career, people like you and Ripp will say, "Well, he doesn't get injured, even if he's on a crappy training program, because he's a freak athlete." Makes no sense at all.

@@tunnelrat78 Ichiro Suzuki has a fitness routine that Ripp would probably criticize and mock. Yet Ichiro has proven to be EXTREMELY durable. Guys like you and Ripp would probably say, "Well, Ichiro is a freak athlete, so he thrives despite his poor training program." Yet, if Ichiro was one to get hurt a lot, guys like you and Ripp would probably say, "Well, OF COURSE he gets hurt a lot! Look at the ridiculous training program he's doing!" Can't have it both ways. Makes ZERO SENSE AT ALL....

I agree with Ripp on this one. Brady has the intangibles that allow him to be good DESPITE the type of training he is doing (or not doing). However, what I disagree with is Ripp's seemingly perpetual need to dismiss the work and results of strength coaches, who coach at big, elite colleges, by making a sweeping, blanket statement that "Those athletes would improve and perform at a high level no matter what they did." And, "They are a result of selection not development." This is all somewhat true. HOWEVER, it would be true ONLY if these high-level athletes were competing only against lower-level athletes. So the entire Georgia football team could probably skip lifting weights, they could practice only 2 days per week, and they could have a training table filled with Cheetos, Gushers, Doritos, and Pepsi, yet because Georgia has so many freak athletes, they could, likely, still easily beat a team, like say Kent State, even if the Kent State players had the best strength coach in the world and the players gave 100% effort at all times. The difference in natural talent between the two teams is just HUGE. But that's not the what's going on. We don't have teams like Georgia constantly playing teams that they are always physically superior to. Nope. You have Georgia playing Alabama, LSU, and Mississippi. You have Michigan playing, Ohio State and Penn State. You have Oregon playing Washington, USC, Arizona. So you have athletes of similar talent levels playing one another. So, in this situation, teams need EVERY edge they can get. So what one does in the weight room DOES MATTER, and the stakes are high. So please don't insinuate that strength coaches at top schools have it easy JUST BECAUSE they coach "freak athletes" because they are coaching their FREAK ATHLETES to compete against other FREAK ATHLETES.

He's not a freak athlete when it comes to running, jumping and cutting. He's a freak athlete when it comes to things that are not as easily measured - vision, ability to process information quickly and react to it, hand-eye-coordination, etc.

Is Tom Brady really a freak athlete? The guy was slow as shit and I doubt he was naturally strong. High intelligence obviously but that is what he got by on, not his God-given talent.
