I think it's even based on a creepypasta, look up Mario 85, it's a level from a creepypasta about a kid being trapped in his evil bootleg Mario game, and the level is basically 1-1 with slight changes, getting darker before encountering a demon pretending to be Mario at the end who chases you back through the level. The level has been recreated, and it's basically this but with evil Mario chasing you back to the start instead of raining thwomps.
