That was part why Gundam was so good. Before that, there really was no question about children getting into robots, because they were the hero, of course they would get in, it's so cool! Gundam on the other hand showed what getting into the robot entailed, and how naturally it was fucked up that children got to do that, even Bright multiple time in the shows tries to have someone else pilot the Gundam because Amuro is understandably too emotionally immature at his age.

Fun fact, the original author of Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino wasn't impressed by the voice actor of Amuro, Tōru Furuya when he voiced this scene, so out of frustration he walked into the recording chamber and slapped him physically, this is where the famous line "you.... hit me" came from. After, Tomino ordered Furuya : "Use that tone in the scene."

Amuro is an accidental pilot who should've died more than 5 times if not for the gundam's defenses. He felt both inferior to other pilots and scared of the number of people he has defeated and killed just because of piloting the gundam. His whining is understandable. actually it's less a bright slap and more him having good role models like Banjou Haran, Guy Shihioh, Kouji Kabuto, Ryouma Nagare. in alpha 3 he gets a 'Bright Slap' on a tactical level when his Eva is taken over from third Impact and everyone beats the unholy hell out of it until he regains control and ends it.
