Amuro gets his car stuck in some mud. Hilarity ensues. To avoid future confusion: This is the dub from the VHS tapes. Not the dub for the series on Toonami.

Awkward dub aside, this is unironically a brilliant scene. The first time the protagonist personally meets the antagonist he's been fighting so hard but they just politely interact like normal human beings, Char even helping Amuro get his car out of the mud, despite being on opposite sides of the war. It reminds Amuro (and the viewers) we're all just people at the end of the day and makes you wonder if there is any point to all the killing that's been going on.

That's sort of the point to most of the Gundam story in the UC, you have people like any others in a war driven by governments or movements that traps other wise peaceful people who just want to live their lives. It's a tragedy of war and the horrors of man that he repeatedly wrought on himself.

Lmao what’s so funny about this scene is the fact that even though they don’t “know” each other they weren’t more hostile considering that one is part of the Earth Federation and the other is part of Zeon. It’s like a Nazi and a British officer coming across each other on the road during WW2. I guess it can just boil down to the fact that Amuro is only 16 and that Char usually likes to fight in a mobile suit. Also I doubt Char would give a 16 year old Federation soldier a hard time as they were most likely dragged into the war. That’s if he didn’t know who Amuro was.

For those who are confused why they aren’t fighting each other here’s how I see it: To start Amuro is constantly shown reluctant to actually engage in battle, even on do or die terms. Char is really a double agent and is only playing along till he can get his shot at revenge. All three people in this scene are budding newtypes, which often show a heightened sense of morality. Also IIRC this is a neutral zone. Thus nobody involved perceives this situation from a militaristic standpoint, nor are they actually sanctioned to.

I really wish that the meeting in Char's Counterattack had been here, on Side 6, rather than on Side 1. Cameron Bloom is even in both settings, would have been neat.

Fun fact: "Shahsnable" is actually Char's name for his penis. Regarding the dub itself, I like both Michael Lindsay and Steve Blum a lot, and I actually think Lindsay makes a pretty good Amuro tone-wise, but in this particular case, Michael Kopsa is basically a perfect Char, especially in later projects when he was more comfortable with the role. He gets across Char's charismatic, aristocrat-like bearing while also giving him that slight coldness that makes you not trust him. Still...why "Sha"...?
