I'd agree. It's best used just to troubleshoot issues since the log records all system activity and sometimes tells more than a basic trouble condition will.

Why don't they simply have a USB port where you can plug a terminal in and use a full screen or better yet a Bluetooth interface no one can say that that would be insecure because it's no different than working directly with the crippled keypad. This industry is desperate and ripe for innovation

Cost vs use. Most people never venture in there other than techs and even if adding it only cost an extra buck per board it's viewed as best spent elsewhere.

A VT100 terminal emulator is free open source even a basic on board IOT Web server is free open source, the state of the art for this gear is a total joke, a smart home thermostat is light years ahead . Honeywell is a monopoly stifling competition in the industry A raspberry pi or an Arduino single board computer is a vastly superior platform at 10 to 50 bucks.
