I have butternuts and its my favourite wood for making rustic coffee tables, when I saw them up I don’t make slabs, I use every inch of diameter sometimes the boards are only a few feet long, or only a few inches wide, you will be surprised at how many projects you will love to use butternut. Awesome show.

I haven't made anything to sell, but I did a big maple slab for my kitchen table, and got a slab of butternut for a bench to go with it. I want to get a couple more smaller slabs to turn into chairs to go on the opposite side of the table, but in a similar style to the bench and table, which are just big slabs with four legs that go all the way through the slabs, and are double wedged in an X pattern for each leg. A bit like hanging an axe head, except all the wedges are wood.

Aloha from Hawai'i! Butternut! I never knew that tree had such a beautiful grain. Please let me indulge in an old memory. My childhood was spent in a farming community in NE Conn. in a family of all boys. Since our mom was a school teacher and worked, she taught us guys to cook really early. In 1960 when I was 11, I entered fudge I made in the cooking side of our annual agricultural fair. (I also showed heifers.) I won a blue ribbon. All those older women were not happy! My secret ingredient? Butternuts that I harvested from a tree by an alfalfa field down the road from my house. I have since learned that butter nuts have a creamy texture like macademia nuts grown in these islands. I love watching your show because it illustrates that treasures can be found in your backyard or community, a lesson I learned as a young boy. Thank you!

Butternut is sometimes called white walnut depending on what part of the country you're from. I have seen it in the low lands .mabee that's why the log was buttressed on one end so much . I t has a pointed nut compared to walnut.and different number of leaflets.
@Mistraker
@Mistraker 4 жыл бұрын
It's not just a name. It is indeed a species of walnut. The wood is far less dense than black walnut, though. I got a slab of it to use for a bench, to go with a maple slab kitchen table I made. The lighter color goes well with the maple slab, and is of similar density, and was very similar to work with. I'm unsure of what sort of maple this is, but a less dense variety. I have a smaller slab table I made for my nightstand, which is rock maple, which was far more dense than either the kitchen table, or the bench I made to go with it. Lovely little table, but the bark inclusions forced me to make it three legged, instead of four. For a nightstand, it doesn't matter. Works a treat.

You sure know your woods. Beautiful grain and color. Fantastic facing for any furniture or cabinets. Ash is under rated and a fantastic wood also, but better used for structure out of sight. If I did not know better I would think you are making cabinets with all of this sawing lately!?! A lot of really nice wood for fine furniture of some sort. I know you love your walnut but these are running close behind. Too much walnut can make a room look dark. Not a problem with this butternut. Thank you and good luck with what ever this is all for. Just an old fan who use to work with wood. Too broke down anymore.

Butternut, aka white walnut, will steam and dry to exactly the same dark color that black walnut does. Most production mills package it with black walnut, as it will be almost impossible to identify between it and black walnut. It does require steaming before the dry kiln to keep it from busting and warping.

I turn bowls, and like walnut the best...but butternut second best. Butternut has some warm honey highlights that you don't see in walnut. It is a bit softer than walnut but both woods turn nicely, sand easily and take a great finish (I usually use walnut oil, but General's Salad Bowl Finish can be built up to a high gloss).
