Ladies, you don’t have a weight loss problem; you have metabolic dysfunction, which often stems from and is caused by chronic stress and CORTISOL dysregulation.
If your cortisol is dysregulated-whether it’s too high or too low due to chronic stress and burnout -weight loss becomes nearly impossible. 😩
Put simply, when cortisol is imbalanced, losing the last five or 10 pounds won’t happen. In fact, it’s why it can be so difficult! You can’t fool your body when stress hormones are dysregulated-and no amount of fasting, dieting or exercise will do the trick as most of you have found!
Here’s a few reasons WHY cortisol dysregulation affects weight loss:
1. Effect on Blood Sugar: Cortisol influences blood sugar levels by stimulating glucose production in the liver and reducing glucose uptake in tissues. When cortisol levels are consistently high, it can lead to chronically elevated blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels can hinder weight loss because the body is more likely to store excess glucose as fat, especially around the abdomen.
2. Muscle Breakdown: Prolonged high cortisol levels can promote muscle breakdown (catabolism) and inhibit muscle growth (anabolism). Since muscles are metabolically active tissues, losing muscle mass can slow down metabolism, making it harder to burn calories and lose weight.
3. Appetite and Cravings: Cortisol influences appetite and food preferences. High cortisol levels can significantly increase appetite, particularly for high-calorie and high-carbohydrate foods. This can lead to overeating and weight gain, especially if stress-induced eating becomes a coping mechanism.
4. Fat Storage: Cortisol promotes the storage of fat, especially visceral fat (fat around organs), in response to stress. Excess visceral fat is associated with various health risks, including insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, which can further impede weight loss efforts.
5. Impact on Hormones: Cortisol dysregulation can disrupt the balance of other hormones involved in weight regulation, such as insulin, leptin, and ghrelin. These hormonal imbalances can affect appetite, metabolism, and fat storage, making weight loss more challenging.
6. Disrupted Sleep: Cortisol dysregulation disrupts sleep patterns, leading to poor sleep quality and duration. Inadequate sleep affects hormones that regulate appetite and energy expenditure, increasing cravings and reducing energy levels. This can hinder weight loss efforts by promoting overeating and decreased physical activity.
As a personal trainer and someone who knows A LOT about fat loss and nutrition, I tried everything to shed those last five or ten pounds (especially around the belly), EVERYTHING BUT ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSE which is why none of them worked until I shifted my focus to tackling the root cause: balancing my stress hormones, especially cortisol.
👉🏼Ladies, here’s the truth: you won't be able to lose the belly fat OR that final bit of weight until you address chronic cortisol dysregulation.
In my inner circle, we're launching a six-part series on cortisol, adrenal, and nervous system healing. I'll be showing you how to balance cortisol levels effectively, the most effective ways to reduce stress and address the ROOT of cortisol imbalances, how heal from past trauma (a critical step in healing cortisol dysregulation), how to process emotions, and how to use breathing techniques to lower and balance cortisol as well!
