Looks amazing! One thing I have done with station lighting to reduce the spotlight effect is to take a dremel and shave the LEDs flat. It gets rid of the lens and makes a nice even diffusion. You could also glue a piece of yellow cellophane onto the led to enhance that '80s fluorescent glow

Great video, I have a lot of old platform sections similar to yours and it seemed a waste not to use them (although there are lots of alternatives) you have given me some good ideas. Not sure about the lights though, this is a bit more trickier to achieve a more realistic effect, but at the same time concealing them within scale. I am at least a year away from this stage , time to ponder !

The platform looks great. A much improvement. I have been waiting to get the card for my platform to finish but it has never arrived so I will take a page from you and paint the unfinished area. The LED's look good but a little large. I would try to make a shade or use smaller ones. I personally like the SMD type. Scott
@EverardJunction9 жыл бұрын
I think I will change out the leds. I used the 3mm ones because I already had plenty and hoped they wouldn't look too big.
@alan1graham10 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard great video as always. i did something very similar on my own layout but was not happy with the spotlight effect of the single LEDs. What i did was to replace the single LEDs with strips of LEDs . you can buy 5 metre lengths of 12 V strip LEDs which can be cut into small sections of 3 LEDs and which happen to fit very nicely between the platform stanchions. (they are also ideal for coach lighting and building lighting) By doing this and using an appropriate resistor the light was much more evenly distributed. There is a knack to doing this however . i am happy to provide more details if anyone is interested.
@EverardJunction10 жыл бұрын

Nice to see your station is starting to look more realistic. Can I suggest you spray the adverts using matt spray varnish? It really tones it down and makes it more realistic than the glossy paper. That's what I had to do as mine were far too shiny to start with. Looking good. Those Bachmann modernisation items are a god send to modern image modellers! I bought loads of packs for use on my platforms. How did you fit the people in to place? I used a tiny bit of blu tack, so I can reposition and remove them if I need to clean/dust the platforms. Enjoyable update as always. Dave
@EverardJunction9 жыл бұрын
DaveClass47 Thanks Dave. I've got a fair list of things to do on these before I commit them back to the layout. I'll spray the ads with matt varnish, good idea, didn't think of that. I've glued the figures down with some rocket card glue. I don't plan on moving them and if I need to clean the platforms I just hit them with some air from my compressor. Cheers
@DeanPark9 жыл бұрын
EverardJunction Good idea about cleaning with a blast of air from the compressor...I didnt think of that!! lol Might glue mine down in due course and use your cleaning technique. I eventually got around to uploading my station video yesterday...I'm pleased with how mine turned out too. How old is your layout? When did you start work on it? Mine is 2 years old....at this rate its going to take me another 6 years to get it 'finished', by which time the station area might need a revamp! Its never ending, but I suppose that's part of the fun!
@EverardJunction9 жыл бұрын
DaveClass47 I started mine properly in about September 2009, but there was a lot of planning before that. The two decks and track laying was complete in about March 2010. So I've been going for over 5 years. Got delayed in 2012 when I ripped up the whole right hand side and lengthened it. Probably about another 2 - 3 years work I'd say.

The platforms do look a lot better darker youre right. and its amazing what a little work to the canopys does to them, its hard to imagine how toy like they start out when you see them on the built up platform. Any ideas on what you are going to do about the spotlamp effect youre getting from the LEDs? I seem to remember the old lamps in my local stations had some kind of reflector cover on them. Not unlike the sodium street lights have. you could use it as a defuser rather than a reflector. Or put the blub into a tube with the side cut out but with the ends on, the ends would block the beam out the end of the LED, you turn up the power and get a glow down from the side
@EverardJunction10 жыл бұрын
BladeRunner21577 I have a few ideas i'm going to try. They look ok in the flesh, but some better diffusion would be useful.

Regarding the Spotlight problem you have with the LED's, you could possibly use some opaque perspex or something similar to diffuse the light, that way you will still have the light but it wont be focused into a spot.
@EverardJunction10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Gregory I've got a couple of things I'm going to try. In reality with reduced brightness the lights look quite good already. I've got some plastic I can adapt to try and diffuse them some more.

Love the station...its beautiful, just a couple of suggestions...the waiting room should have a roof because what if its freezing out..people will want to wait in the heat or just a windy day?.....and also the station is missing a crucial component...a map of some sorts...you should draw up a map of your layout and put it on the station...also one more thing...how about adding some lighted frames around the billboard so there lit up...on the whole tho good job...
@EverardJunction10 жыл бұрын
Christopher Strunk I might put one on, but you can't see it because the canopy is in the way. I also need to add more passengers to them so will leave the roof off for now. Most waiting rooms of the era I've been in are very cold and don't have heaters. They're just to keep people out of wind and rain.
@poinchesterstation451410 жыл бұрын
How did u make your own personalised station signs. Did you use a website? Excellent work mind and I might try using my old hornby platforms like that with a bit of paint and plastikard
@EverardJunction10 жыл бұрын
Poinchester station I made the station signs in paint. Its quite easy as they're quite basic signs. Then I pasted them into publisher to get the sizing correct. Feel free to do whatever you want with the platforms. It wasn't my idea anyway, I've seen them before on another layout.

Another fantastic update from you, can you help me i really do not understand resistors and i want to is there a dummies guide i can use as i just can't work them out.
@EverardJunction9 жыл бұрын
Resistors are quite complex once you get into it. To work out exactly what resistor you need you have to do some calculations. As a general rule with leds I use a 220 ohm resistor on 5V and a 1K ohm resistor on 12V. You can increase the size of those resistors to make the lights dimmer.
@anthony5669 жыл бұрын
That helps a lot thank you.
@waldenhouse9 жыл бұрын
I might have missed it Richard, but are the LEDs 12 volt? If not you'll need a resistor for each one. (Sorry I realise you'll know this already, just saying for others' benefit).Try filing the bulbous "lens" from the end of the LED. This will help diffuse the light and get rid of the "beam". Another way is to get white plastic straws (eg, from "The Works"). Point LEDs in each end (cut to length), the LEDs will need to lay horizontal, pointing at each other, or along the straw. This will diffuse the light also. The straws can also be 'flattened' with "Tower" LEDs inserted. Anyway, great update, and hope you don't mind me sharing suggestions/ideas. Cheers, Bob
@EverardJunction9 жыл бұрын
RMLectronics East Yorks Thanks Bob. They are wired in parallel so I only need one resistor. I've replaced all the leds since this was filmed with smd leds. They are much better and have sorted the spotlight issues. It now looks much better.
