Appreciate all the engagement and excitement that’s turning up in the comments with these videos this year. Can I just ask that we dial the OCD level down from 11 to 9 please! It’s a model of an imaginary place on a table in the attic. It will never be true to life or 100% accurate in every detail. Remember, it’s about creating a balance, having fun and feeling a sense of days gone by. I don't want to put a dampener on things, far from it. However I feel with each video some of us are losing sight of what model railways are about. Cheers Guys 👍

Having read down for a few of these comments, I think that if anything it just goes to show how much personality investment some people have with your layout. It’s really nothing to do with us, other than watching your work but the level of quality and storytelling is sucking people in! Hi Richard, again you have smashed it, its amazing what you can make and how you seem to have such a logical and clear focus on what you want to acheive, and strike a balance of enough detail but not too much. Same here - I don't have the space, the patience or the means (having picked up a number of other expensive hobbies already) to really delve into this myself, but I enjoy seeing the process and appreciate the attention to detail, even (maybe especially) the grime and grunge. And there's a sense of humor, too - every time I see "Farce Insurance", I have to chuckle, because it reminds me of the crap office jobs I had early in my adulthood.

It's a strange feeling watching someone so expertly recreate one's childhood. 1980s station platforms waiting for my dad to come home from the office (Liverpool Street to Marks Tey, every day). The colour schemes, the clocks, the flickering train screens, the grim brickwork, the 'haphazardness' of it all before rules about wheelchair access and accessibility for visually impaired etc. meant railways had to look out for missing paving slabs etc. I'm not saying I want to go back to those times, but these videos are a wonderful comfort and nostalgia hit. Thanks Richard, superb craftsmanship aside, they're greatly appreciated on a personal level.

One of the many things I love about your layout is that it (to me) straddles the fine line between cosy and run down. You may not want to spend time in that car park after dark ... but at the same time you do, you know? It has character, I'd feel like I fitted right in walking those crooked paving slabs. Your layout looks so lived in, it's amazing.

In the early 80s, my older brother and I were hedge hopping. My bro managed to make a bad landing and he broke his arm. We both ran home - he was crying in extreme pain…I was crying in sympathy. We made up an elaborate story to our parents that my brother had tripped on the wonky paving, which they totally believed! When my bro turned 18 he received about £3000 compensation… My parents were eventually told the truth only about 10 years ago or so…they did see the funny side. Thanks for jogging my memory with wonky slabs. We lost my brother about 2 weeks ago! He’d been ill for some time… RIP Andy

I know Richard fiddled around with the bikes for sometime. There is a limit to the detail these tiny kits can take. I use them at dean park too. Fragile little blighters !!

Fantastic work as ever Richard! 🤓 I like how you have altered the terrain slightly to incorporate the canal and give a reason for the other part of the canal being slightly curved 🤔 I really like those drain covers as they add an element that is seldom modelled, rather like the addition of graffiti and litter too! And the wee scene with the ramp and overgrown foliage really does give the scene a gritty realism that brings back memories for me as a young man when either off to London for a gig or to work, or on my way back from a night out after wetting a few too many whistles and trying desperately to work out how to use the ticket machine that seemed to be moving around as I tried to put coins in!🤪🥃🍺🍷 Must say the road furniture (especially the parking ticket machines) look like excellent products and you have used the. Just watched it with my wife. You just modelled her teens to early 20s in and around Ealing Broadway Station. Dingy car park - spot on, including trip hazard paving. Evoking an era is, as I've said before, at least as much a piece of art as anything at The Slade or Royal College of Art

the shops/flats look really good, the rest lucks a bit to clean, dont know if theirs anything u can do, the concrete on the shops looks well weathered, brilliant job brother,the attention to details like making your own handrails, sloping the odd bollard etc is top notch keep on keeping on brother bob&MrTao,xxx

I think that the creation of realistic, believable landscape is the mark of the artist when building a fictional railway. The car park to stairs to bushes to retaining wall to office block, hides the height transition and encourages your brain to believe that “ I could walk up there” so there’s a real personal placement of that bit of the railway. The town under the bridge on Runswick Bay , an O gauge NER circular layout, had the same: a group of buildings of different ages that looked like they’d grown organically over time with the necessary paths and flights of steps weaving it all together. Magic. Yours has the dank canal tow path disappearing into the gloom with the trains booming overhead, as another example. Top work and very believable.

Can’t recall if I have commented on this channel before, but felt compelled to today. I was really happy to see a new video this evening. It’s exactly what I needed. This has become the perfect relaxation tool for me, so joyous is it watching it all come together. Yes the standard is very very high, but it’s presented in such an inspiring and logical way that it makes it seem within reach. This layout / channel has inspired me to sort out my railway room after a years break (house move) and now I am nearly back to actual modelling. Thanks a lot for doing this.

One little idea I had for the inside of the building, opposite the ticket machine, departure screens, and/or wall mounted telephones!

Lovely work and very convincing. Couple of comments: There needs to be a largish sign next to the pay and display machines with the parking charges on. The flowerbed would (based on my experience) be full of litter right outside the station entrance, people would walk out and throw their used tickets and food wrappers into the bushes. Also a tip when lining using the paint pen; if you add a piece of masking tape to the bottom of your straightedge/template that doesn't go all the way to the edge the paint won't wick underneath.

Hi Richard. Well this time you seem to have almost taken modelling to another level!! Maybe a table in the attic, but that IMHO is not the point. It is an education of observation and a model depicting the way it was. Of course not everything would be correct, it never will be. I find a huge difference between the comments on what you achieve and those who nit pick 1 rivet out of 500 being a millimetre out!! If it brings you happiness and enjoyment then it is good for you and a joy for us. The other thing Richard is enjoy it now. I have modelled for over 60 years and age and health problems mean I can't now do half the things I used to do even 5 years ago. Best regards, Bob

Congratulations on this one. It's definitely one of your best videos. I worked on the railway from 1977 to 2020 and lived and worked through the period which you've chosen to portray. I have to say that you're making an awesome job of it. Taking notice of your comment about dialling it down to 9, I'm not criticising, but would like to pass on an observation - the lintel above the tracks would be filthy with the diesel exhaust blowing from the roofs of the engines. Richard. Utterly amazing, OUTSTANDING is probably the best word use. Theres a few layouts out there on youtube where I could imagine being on their stations or lineside on but this one, transported me back to a 14yr old kid with his mates, standing at platforms ends or sitting on a brute at Ealing Broadway, Woking and Wandsworth Road for the first time looking at trains. All that was missing was my mates n I on the platform(no that's not a hint, just my imagination running away with itself) The work you put in, the skills you show, the eye for the finer detail, however big or small makes a massive difference and nails it. To pull them off altogether, is an art form in itself. Thank you so much for sharing. The time just flew over and I was genuinely disappointed when it ended.

Fantastic work once again! Love the car park. Really ties that corner of the layout together. Only thing it's missing is a Mk IV or V Cortina. A Mk V 2.0 GLS was my set of wheels circa 1989 -93. They were still everywhere then. You got me rummaging through some boxes as a result of this video. Found the pin badge I picked up on the "Network Day", 21st June 1986. £3 for a travel anywhere ticket which me and a mate of mine took advantage of just for the hell of it. Spent the day travelling everywhere by NSE and the Underground. Ended up in Cockfosters for no other reason that it made us giggle. Teenagers eh?

Knowing the absolutely staggering amount of attention you pay to relevant details of everything including things most of us would never notice, like weeds in cracks, up against fences, litter bins etc. All the stuff we see every day and completely ignore. I reckon you will continue fettling and improving and i will still be happily watching your skills in about twenty years time. I still backtrack and marvel at your attention to details that we would never have given a second glance to until you explained what you have added and where you put it. I worked for BR 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, on Network South East. I recognise so much of what you have constructed and reckon if i could shrink down, i could work a couple of 12 hour shifts on Everard Junction, no problem. It's looking brilliant, I love the new additions. The paving slabs with period correct tripping hazard and the guy in trainers and hoodie leaning up against the wall, looking like he is either going to mug someone or steal their car all caught my eye. I never thought of using a white paint marker for road markings so thanks for that too ✔. Even though I live on the other side of the planet with different looking railways, there is enough common ground to make it all recognisable. Great fun 😊

Model railways are great to look at and watch. Just wish I had the room. However, EJ just seems on another level. You know it is a model but all the details and weathering lift it from that uncanny valley look into something much more realistic and believable. The thought and placement of tiny details just adds layers to the scenes in a logical way.The only thing missing is the railway station smell and some rain.

Very impressive detail 👍 nice work transporting me back to the 80s ! Only one thing needed I remember is there was always a couple of bikes in the shed that had been robbed of a wheel or seat 😬

There are no broken bikes because the bike shed is not prototypical. In real life it would be as far away from the entrance as possible and nowhere near any lighting!
