Just wanted to say, I am a modeller but I don't run a rail layout, however I really do enjoy watching your videos. I travelled a great deal on Southern Region throughout the eighties and watching your layout in action brings back many pleasant memories, leaning out the window of a slam door coach on a hot summer afternoon or sitting stationary at signals as other trains ran by. Your attention to detail is superb and your weathering spot on. The view from one of your trains down to the streets and shops below would be identical to a train traveller of the period. Great stuff keep posting. :)

Yes, I have notifications on for both Chandwell and Everard Junction and they are the two best on KZbin. Love that one is short and weekly, and the other is bigger chunkier updates, they pair well. Even though it's pretty much a finished layout, Wrenton is well worth adding to your list as it's such a beautiful and relaxing little layout.

I had to watch this again on New Year’s Day. I may be mad but your layout is like a 3D painting by a famous artist. Every angle has some thing beautiful (in a 1980s way) to see. Ok I have had a few glasses of Champagne 😊 but I am an 80s Child> It brought back a memory of waiting for a train to college a Willesden Junction on a cold January morning when I was about 19… I hope you are proud of what you are achieving here! Your approach to modelling is refreshing from the seemingly unending meltdowns people are having on RMWeb when a model isn't quite perfect - even down to the box its in! You just get on with it and find a solution. I stopped modelling UK outline a few years ago due to all the dummy spitting on RMWeb which was ruining the hobby for me and this channel is the only UK outline one I subscribe to, the rest being US ones. I've been modelling for 40 years and always open to learning new things, which I have through your channel, especially using a Cricut machine to produce structures etc Many thanks for your excellent channel Richard.

Thanks very much! Appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Personally I find all the dummy spitting highly amusing. I enjoy lurking in the shadows having a good laugh at the whole thing. Generally I very much enjoy the improvements and details that can be added to the models finding it a hobby in itself. Cheers

Happy New Year, great video as ever. Having worked in the industry for 40 years if you had been able to find photos of the bottom of the dogfish hopper you would find that the materials actually polish the area from blue/black down to quite bright silver on the gates. They look great anyway but knowing your attention to detail I just thought you'd like to know.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the info. As you can expect photos of the insides are rare and usually cast in shadows. I found it rather difficult to tell what was there in a number of photos. I'll add that job to the list.
@ahshotdown1535

@@EverardJunction Wish I had some photo's for you but alas. Some finer details, Top 1m heavy flaky rust with black patches where the rust flaked off (tiny speckles on your scale). From there down to lower 1m smooth rust as you've already done. Bottom 1m blackish/blue graduating to quite polished steel/ silver in an arc shape lowest points in the corners.The steel angle would wear on the edges from the centre out. Silver polished areas would have rust streaking where rain washed rust down over them. Depending on the age and how much use they'd had there might be odd bits of plate or angle welded in to patch them up, usually a bodged job. Having said all that probably just a lot easier to fill them up with material.☺

Excellent work - superb layout, takes me right back, a real time machine. I've used various methods for removing other people's weathering. But the trickiest in the "to do pile" is one that someone has used acrylics on and the livery underneath is adorned with some intricate decals that, are not, to my knowledge, available. To date my usual methods haven't worked so I may try yours (but test it on a small patch first)🤞🤞🤞😊 Every day is a school day! 👍✌️💜😊

Thanks for another really useful video which got me thinking about a ScotRail BG coach I bought second hand which was apparently professionally weathered. I felt it was too dirty. I'd has a go a few years back with 70% IPA which had little impact, this time I went for 99.9% IPA. Much better results. I did them give it a clean with soapy water to remove any left over IPA. Totally agree with your advice on checking prototypes, whilst some MK BG were manky, those in passenger rakes such as my ScotRail one would have been a bit cleaner as they would have gone through the carriage cleaner with the other passenger coaches in the rake I suspect. I couldn't upload a before and after photo so have added them to the RMWEB Everard Junction page.

Great vid and excellent job as always. These wagons weren’t always empty even when they were empty. There’d quite often be a cluster of ballast caught at the bottom and on the doors. Stuff that hung up when the doors were dropping, that has subsequently rattled down to the lowest point. And caught up round the end platforms too, overspill from loading. So just 9.75/10 from me!

Usually straight water first and then a progression up to a 50/50 mix of 99% isopropyl alcohol and water is a good place to start and in my experience will remove most paints and matte varnish solutions, however it can sometimes get into the factory paints ever so slightly the higher the content of isopropyl alcohol.

I use Dettol disinfectant cleaner for paint stripping. The brown stuff that contains Chloroxylenol -- usually available in Tesco, Sainsburys etc. Do not leave plastics in it for very long (they go soft) or get undilute cleaner on your hands (the skin'll come off). It will dissolve acrylic paint and enamel into a goo that can be scrubbed off. It will also substantially weaken superglue and 2-part putties.

Well the cleaner , according to it’s filed Material Safety Data Sheet, contains: Butyl Carbitol Ecosurf EH-9 Sodium Metasilicate Tetra Sodium EDTA Water I’m guessing the butyl carbitol is the primary active solvent wirth the rest just being helper ingredients. Find a local cleaner/degreaser with that as the active active ingredient and give it a try. As a more aggressive “remover” LUX DLE will remove factory paints often , and can be applied with a cotton bud/swab to remove logos of you need to rebadge a factory paint job. Though it can get to the underlying plastic if not careful. Light rubbing with a not fully wet swab is the key there.

I have one recommendation on the varnish for you. Testors Dullcoat. A lot of people who paint figure would rate this as the best matt varnish you van buy, myself included. So if you need something you know is going to do a good job when you need it, have a look at this. Watch out for people hiking the price up. UK shops do have a stock, I say that because it can go out of stock pretty quick as soon as figure painters see it in stock. As for a paint stripper if you can find it, Use green stuff, and thats it's name. well worth a look if you have a part of the layout you need to be careful with. Check the reviews of these and see what you think

I think quite a lot of the degreasers you can buy might work ok. I've mostly used "Diggers" brand in the past but you have to be careful not to leave it in too long (like days on end) as it will start pulling the original paint off. I use "Simple Green" degreaser now which takes longer but is less aggressive. So far so good.

You could use some plasticard (brick or stone) and curve it to the shape or the tunnel portal. You'd need some sort of frame for it to attach to and hold it's shape. Doing that on curved track would be difficult though. Hope that helps.

Vallejo Paint - IPA 100% Isopropyl Alcohol. Excellent, leave to soak and agitate after a while. 'Plated' chromey plastic parts - Immerse in Domestos. Enamel paint - Mr Hobby Tool Cleaner (Bad fumes, wear mask, do outdoors). As said, don't be tempted to leave things immersed and go away on holiday for two weeks - Lots of plastics will start to degrade after a while.

LA's Totally Awesome can strip factory paint but you would have to lay them in the stuff for a long while in my experience, I've stripped older coaches down to bare plastic by letting it soak for weeks, it does leave some primer on ribbing type details, but you can easily clean that with Iso-Alcohol

I am wanting to buy my hubby a new controller as he has a Guagemaster Prodigy but it only has 20 loco functions. I am thinking of the Z21 by Roco and Fleichman. Is his a good controller or is there others that are better. It needs to go up to at least 28 loco functions as I bought him an Accurascale Deltic 55. Love your channel

The Z21 is a good unit. There are a few versions of it I think, I'm not familiar not having one myself. My current controller is also limited and I'm looking to upgrade in future. Very difficult to determine which controller is best due to so many variables. However from what I've read the Z21 is well regarded in the hobby. Hope that helps.

Hi, just seen this video, there are some wagons online that were weathered by TMC, do you think TMC weathering can be removed? i've never been a fan of weathering, fair play to those whom do like it.

With respect to weathering reference photos, I some photos I took in 1985 of sealion/seacow wagons in dutch livery but dirty as hell, to the point where you can hardly see the yellow top. If you would like a copy message me and we can find a way of getting the file to you. Those dogfish, seacow and sealion wagons are *FAR* too clean. ;-)

People are never happy!! Modellers will always find something wrong with their models and find ways of improving their model making!! It's no different to a dog chasing its tail. I always thought the idea of building a layout is to build it then enjoy it for years to come but it seems people are never happy with what the've got and what they've achieved, always wanting more, always wanting to improve and always wanting to be the best. In reality they never go anywhere!!
