I was actually going to comment that exact same thing, that is that was a still it could easily be taken for a e=real scene as opposed to a layout. Impressive to say the least.

Has others pointed out: the most realistic mini train set up I've seen. I'm not a train hobbyist, more a fantasy/military mini collector, when I make small bases and vignettes for them, I always see it as bringing a bit of their world into ours, you are bringing a lot of the 80's back into our time, brings back some memories, it was a great time to be a teenager.

I quite like that "garish" canopy lighting -- it's a contrast to the more homely flat lights (The trick with the orange paint for the flats is fantastic!!) that sort of works to distinguish the area and it's kind of in keeping with the rather brutalist architecture of a station like that to be painfully overlit. If you can find the electronics for it, you could make the odd light here and there flicker on and off like the bulb's going. 🙂

As a child of the 70s and 80s this really resonates with me - it makes me quite nostalgic! All it needs is for everything to be dripping with permanent rain....

You make a very valid point re disability access and awareness. I became disabled in 1990 (Wheelchair bound) - even in those heady days - I had some truly eye watering experiences on our trains. Like for example being told that I couldn't take my wheelchair into the first class wheelchair space because its batteries might explode - and would have to place the wheelchair in the guards van of the HST - right above the diesel fuel tanks. And as if to make this sound even more like a good TV Sitcom - Virgin's Answer was "Our train Managers are highly trained in their task of ensuring passenger safety!" - my illusion that they'd just hired any old idiot and given it a posh uniform wasn't shattered! My wheelchair had dry gel batteries that Virgin would fly in the normal aircraft hold at 38,000feet!!! Im loving your videos - and always look forward to them. Excellent stuff.
@ianwalker2250

I should add that that happened in 2003 on a service from Rhyl to London!
@EverardJunction

Fortunately things are much better these days despite there still being several shortcomings/issues regarding disability access on public transport. As always I try to model what stuff was like back then rather than what I think it should be like. I'd still consider your experience shocking though, especially for 2003!

@@EverardJunction I had some amazing experiences on trains - including preventing a train leaving because they hadn't offloaded me and the wheelchair - well what else was I going to use 12 years railway work experience for? I knew that if they couldn't close the doors they couldn't move the train and that once Id removed the magnetic key from the wheelchair's motor - it was going nowhere! lol I love the fact that you model as it was - that's as it should be :)

I restored a Mk1 Corsair with the cherry interior and V4 engine! It had sat in a field in Southern Ireland for 22 years. Had to make the front scuttle as you cannot but these with the foglight holes. This is the best layout I’ve seen, the realism is off the scale! Love the videos, and thanks for the Cosworth ad, my daughter Sierra loved it. 😁

Ah, yes, a blue Vauxhall Cavalier! God, I remember being a back seat passenger in one such vehicle, back in 1996, going to a wedding. Except, the car didn't make it to the wedding. The driver, who was not the owner of the car (the groom was, but he was in the passenger seat with an injury), managed to reverse it into a pond! He looked at all four of us, and said "Well, you said reverse."! But, the update is very good Richard. Incidentally, next time you're up Dean Park's way, you're welcome to come and visit my layout as well!

Your new paving slabs look amazing real, so much better than the card ones you used before, the scale is so much better. The card ones looked like they would have been 6 inches thick in real life. And the different colouring of the slabs is the icing on the cake, just like the real things. Loved the dark opening scene, that looked so real, and the paint you have used on for the tarmac reflected the light just the right amount to make it look like the tarmac was damp. just like it would be on a dark and damp winters evening.
@peterbroad1772
@peterbroad1772 2 жыл бұрын
The main issue with the card ones was it looked to me like the paint or solvent was absorbed and the edges swelled-up slightly in a way that could never happen in concrete or stone.

Once again, as everyone else agrees, a cracker of a video showing your attention to detail is second to nice Richard. So glad you gave the pavement another go. I’d never want to say anything that could be even considered as criticism, but the one thing I did always notice was how the pavement slabs would curl slightly due to the cutting and would result in quite an uneven appearance. The idea to do them with plastic is great and they look amazing now.

So refreshing to get back to YOUR reality, its so much better than a lot of others. Your attention to detail is amazing, there were so many places that i drove trains past in the 1980s that you make so recognisable. There are many channels that sow lots of trains, but many of them do not have any crews driving them. You have population all over the place, plus p-way, orange overalls, passengers and crews. I absolutely love what you have done. I always used to wonder about who those people were in all those houses and flats that i drove past and yes, you name it and i have seen it. If i could shrink down to scale, i could walk around in your little world and recognise it all. Have a happy Christmas and a great new year. Thankyou very much. I worked on network southeast and so did my nephew. We were both drivers and he is now retired as well.

Brilliant as always Richard, lovely to see the new class 59 on your layout, I was very privileged to be almost in Foster Yeoman Merehead Quarry the day the first 3 class 59s arrived from Southampton, what a wonder and spectacular site is was to witness the arrival of these beautiful machines, liveried in the well know colors of the company. I believe they were there for a day or two before being taken to Derby for commissioning by British rail for use on the network, not 100% sure I’m actuate on that, but was told that at the time by a Foster Yeoman Engineer. I purchased 5 of these models as they became available from Lima, whilst not entirely accurate, they were a good representation at the time and a delight to place on the layout, I also purchased a number of the wagons to go with them at the time, I still have all these models in my collection. So well done for showing your new purchase on Everard Junction. I always look forward to your updates and only wish I was back at your age to attempt to replicate a lot of your wonderful modeling. Merry Christmas and a happy New Years modeling, Geoff

The varied colour temperature lights in the flat looks absolutely fantastic! Could I suggest while doing night time shots for video, you may find a cheap LED RGB video light useful. If you bounce the light off your ceiling, dim it very low and set it to very cool colour temp, 7000-9000k, this will give you a twilight look as if the sun has just gone down. This will allow the camera to capture some of the detail in the low-light areas. (You may find you need to set your cameras white balance manually to 5600k, if you aren't already doing this). Just a thought! Absolutely loving your work, keep it up!

Interesting comments about the lowering of spec of the cars. You see the same thing in the classic car world. Not only are high spec cars more desirable and survive in higher numbers, lower spec cars tend to get up-specced with parts. It's almost refreshing to go to a classic car show and see something like a fleetline Cortina which were very common as company vehicles back in the day. Your see this in films too, rows of exact period cars highly polished, instead of 10 year old heaps with holes in the wheel arches.

Hi Richard, a very nice update, your layout is truely inspirational and always a joy to watch. I loved your descriptions of how the cars of the 1980's used to "just" fall to pieces. I bought my first second hand car in about 1983 a Triumph Dolomite 1500HL and every car, even decent ones went rusty after a while. I even once had a Meastro, it was horrid, and a Vauxhall Astra GTE, that was great, but rusted after a few years. Anyway, great stuff and thank you. All the best Dave.

Factory weathering has certainly come a long way but still can't compare to the individual modellers artistic touch. Fantastic work, I really enjoyed the update. Thanks for sharing. -grant

Nice to see the class 59, I have an old Lima one with some PGA wagons that runs well, but the Dapol one at sub 150 for dcc ready seems a good update. love the update to the pavements, might be worth also adding a few pen drawn cracks as these paving stones never lasted long.

The lighting takes it to a whole other level! Sooooo cool! Do all of your locos/trains have lights? The attention to detail are insane 🤯

The locos come with lights as standard which is handy. I've added my own lighting to the coaches. Cheers

Another brilliant video Richard 👍🏻 you’ve nailed the nighttime atmosphere around the station perfectly and brings back so many memories…loving the new 47 and like yourself I was sceptical about the 59 ever becoming reality but she’s definitely a winner…can’t wait to see what progress comes next now

This is so realistic I'm sure I've been there! During the late 80s we used to spend some of the school holidays just traveling by NSE trains. Usually from either Abbeywood, Bexleyheath or SIdcup, depending on where we met up . With an all zone travel card we'd try visiting a different set of stations each time. I wouldn't recognize many of them now, but Everard Junction seems familiar. :-)
