Like a few of the commenter here, Rich's coaching style seemed to be a bit abrasive to me and definitely not the traditional style of coaching we're taught in coaching schools. However, after delving into his book and many of his videos and especially the coaching demo ones such as this one, I see how that as a high performance/leadership coach his style of coaching is appropriate and direct. He calls people out, asks them uncomfortable questions, takes them in directions they didn't expect to go, but he has never done it in a way that was rude or disrespectful. He explains it in another video as "high flame coaching" and "coaching to serve not to be their friend". In fact he constantly reassures them that it's human to feel the way they do, that he feels the same way they do a lot of the times, he constantly asks for their agreement/permission to go down a path, and so on. So basically what initially seemed abrasive, is actually becoming clearer that it's just the confidence and experience that he has that's triggering my own fear and self doubt of how to coach clients. I'm learning so much from Rich's and other Evercoach coaches on how to listen for insights, create space for them to take place, and to go deeper than most coaches would be brave enough to take their clients. Thank you for all the amazing insights and perspective shifts Rich 🙏🏼😊

Amazing reflection, Firas! It's all about gaining experience and adapting your coaching style to your clients and what they need (not necessarily what they want), without crossing the line of rudeness or being disrespectful. We're so happy you found this video valuable for your coaching journey. Thanks for sharing :)

According to the video, the submodalities used during the demonstration were visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Visual submodalities were used throughout the video. For instance, the coach asks the client to close their eyes and visualize breathing in deeply [1:02]. Kinesthetic submodalities were used when the coach asks the client to feel their breath in their belly and chest [1:02]. Auditory submodalities were used when the coach asks the client to sigh [1:04].

I appreciate the video being posted. I am a mental health and career counselor. I have been considering getting some coaching training as well but I have continued to have mixed reactions. If I am being honest, there is a part of me that has seen coaching as a joke. This video, and others like it, are really challenging that assumption, but part of be remains skeptical. I wonder if coaching should not be a viable career or that coaches depend on charisma to direct a client to conclusions. The other side of me thinks that maybe counseling is not as powerful as I think it is. That counseling is so bound by tradition and the assumption of superiority that I have allowed myself to remain blind in thinking that it is the only way. Perhaps the intersection of counseling and coaching might be a beautiful path to helping people on a deep level. I had similar reactions to Rich. At times I was really captivated by his approach. He seems to really be present with his clients, but he also then seems to guide them. I am not sure what I think of the guidance. I sometimes think that perhaps the audience members are so bought into the approach that he has that they will believe just about anything he says because he says it in a charismatic and emotional manner. The other side of me thinks he may just be the real deal; a genuinely connected individual that helps draw the client to their inner wisdom. Anyways, there may be better spaces to post these reflections, but I thought I would be honest about this video as well as how it connects to a larger process I have been going through; to get trained as a coach (to connect with my counseling experience) or to not be trained in coaching, that is the question:)

Hi Kirk! Thank you for sharing this very insightful and thought-provoking message. We believe coaching and counseling are both equally powerful, they can both create a great impact on clients, just with different methodologies and approaches. And it's all about finding a methodology that works for you (or taking what you like most from other coaches and creating your own). Coaching can be such a great complement to other careers such as counseling, we'd encourage you to take some time to explore free coaching content to help you decide if it's the right path for you. You can watch this video about what is coaching: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYq4qnasjMmdp5I, and find many more tools, methodologies, and demonstrations on our channel. ❤

Coaching actually starts at 35.17. Rich brought his experiences into coaching sessions. His relations with father,mother, man's group etc, not . If I paid for this I would be disappointed. I really expected something special after his into. I found his style patronising. I felt like he talks too much about himself and some of the insights were forced. Sometimes it felt like he was lecturing his clients. It was useful to watch though for learning purposes.

I was kind of torn about whether this was coaching, or a bit of a taste of his discovery session. I think it may have been a bit of both. It did at times come across a bit more like consulting and therapy at times and some coaching. I’m still just discovering Richard and so far I’m quite happy with what I’m seeing and reading but continuing to see which parts would be something I would be able to employ authentically what works for me.

Knowing when to share your personal experience and when not to is a high level coaching skill. It build rapport and cements trust with someone you just meet and allows them to drop deeper into the experience with you. On the spectrum of coaching / mentoring / etc, this isn’t authentic coaching. He’s leading and projecting his own experiences, which doesn’t allow the client to join their own dots for sustainable transformation. He may get results but they will be short term. Clients will become dependent on him because he is doing too much of the work.

@mindvalleycoach
@mindvalleycoach 3 жыл бұрын
Great question, Nicola! That scenario can definitely happen and it'll be a great testimonial for you as a coach. But serving so powerfully can also invite your clients to see the possibilities of working with you for longer. Seize the opportunity to invite your client to dream even bigger or reflect with them on what they need to do next, and how you could support their journey. Coach them through that. Let us know if this provides any insight to your question ❤
@nicolafarnhill2184
@nicolafarnhill2184 3 жыл бұрын
@@mindvalleycoach Thank you so much for your answer, its exactly where I want to take my coaching, deeper and to the next level. I think my main reason for asking this question, is because I often wonder if I have chosen the wrong clients to work with. Through my own life experiences I have travelled the road of working with people who have suffered from trauma and as a consequence , mental health problems. I excel in this field and it does expand into working with people who branch out from minor depression into wanting to achieve their dreams and goals. But seemingly a lot in this client group cannot afford therapy of coaching, due to be unstable. Any ideas? I am considering changing my client group at present, because I want to work with people who can afford me, to create my own dreams and be able to invest in myself consistently.
@mindvalleycoach
@mindvalleycoach 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicolafarnhill2184 Thanks for sharing that, Nicola. It's definitely a tough place to be as you're obviously helping people who need your services, but they are also holding you back from your highest potential and dream business. The question to ask would be, are you serving your ideal audience or an audience who needs what you have to offer? It would be interesting to evaluate what your ideal audience is (including their investment capacity). How you can use your current talent, skills, and knowledge, to serve an audience who will allow you to charge what you feel is right and grow your business as you desire? We definitely suggest reflecting on it, redefining your *new* ideal client avatar, and then assessing if it feels good to change your audience. Maybe you want to serve both. There's a concept called the Hedgehog Concept by Jim Collins (www.mindtools.com/pages/article/hedgehog-concept.htm) which can help you in this process. Let us know if this was useful and how it goes! ❤️

Not a fan of his coaching really... Too 'in your face' and including too much of himself in the whole process, referring people's situation to himself (although not asked to do that and situation is completely different), making opinions about people's situation or approach (slightly judgmental at times). I realize it's just a glimpse of the coaching approach he takes, however these are real people on the stage with their real problems they agreed to publically speak about, so I think they would deserve the 10 minutes of his undivided attention and then he could comments on his practices.

The coaching industry, the new MLM scheme. Reminds me of Amway. It's not about the money, then it's, you need to be paying a coach more than you can afford. Come on guys.

At some points, i disagreed with the interruptions he was making, suggesting, limiting the options. But then he said, its his way of coaching. Totally fine with it now. Powerful questions were amazing at few moment. The Coin activity was wonderful too. It was really interesting to note that how the client is responding to both choices. Its all about insight. I like his theme. Thanks for wonderful insights.

Wow, I am so impressed with Rich's ability to connect with the clients at such short span of time, to feel so deeply about how they felt, and the insights he is able to dish out to them. It is crazy. I am also very amazed how you use another client, Nathan, to address and bring awareness to Jess. It is unbelievable. I don't think what Rich did is "model-lable" because I have never seen anyone doing it in such manner. Just curious though, is it usual for a coach to be so directive and also "talk" so much? I had impression that the coach is to listen and nudge clients towards a particular direction (solutions)...
@mindvalleycoach

It really depends on the coach and on the coachee, Mounyee! Sometimes, as a coach, you will have to give more or give less if it's what your client needs to move forward. Thanks for sharing your insights ❤

Felt like that last woman got ignored. I know she said that she wanted to practice being silent, but it seems like that became a convenient excuse to completely neglect her and spend the whole time centering some other dude. Kinda painful to watch.

The use of silence and pace is great, undoubtedly he has a powerful style. However I was less comfortable with his own agenda led style. The participant who spoke of not feeling like his business was doing good enough and Rich knocked him down, while it might have been a compliment he was using his barometer to measure not the "client's". There were lots of other examples of him pushing his POV, but as another contributor says maybe thats his style. No sure its a great example of coaching though.

Storytelling attracts most people, but neither the connection between them nor the rationale behind each is clear. Then the challenge of bringing any client the participants want was addressed in a wishy-washy method-and a superior tone that may work for the British culture but not the North American. The whole talk lacks a flow; it’s incoherent. The only lesson can be drawn from the video is that charm can do its magic, so leave behind your self-pity and discover the side of yourself that dares to have high standards and a menu of high prices. Remember, you “serve” not “sell”.

I picked up on his being as much as I did the lessons, the being part is what I admire most! He redefined how I viewed coaching as a whole! To be in silence and not have the answers they expect you to provide but instead ask the powerful questions that shift their thinking! This has changed me in so many ways not just with strategies but the way I view and carry myself! I am truly grateful and will share this forever more!!

Rich has some good knowledge. However, he does come across as more for himself than anyone else. The theatrical pauses, the interjections that redirect attention back to him, the packaging of simple (helpful) ideas as profound insights. Evidently, it works for some .. likely many. Perhaps the public context applied too much pressure to be performative. Rich appears to be riding a crest of the coaching wave. It's incumbent upon him to to reflect upon and interrogate his practice more often than most.

Thanks for sharing, D. Decker! Every coach has their own style, but having a live audience and camera recording definitely could influence a coach when coaching. What's most important is to find what works/doesn't work for each coach when learning and honing their skills :)

D. Decker (with one follower.) Seems like you are the one who is more into being for yourself. Being critical of others can be a way to elevate ourselves. Sometime simple ideas need to be elevated in a way that they are no longer simple.

Believe me Mr. Decker, there are way too many Drama Queens/Kings around in the industry with not more than literally ZERO knowledge. He is definitely giving Pauses, but such Theatrical Pauses are a part of coaching. These Pauses give the time for the audiences to think ahead and then focus back! These are CRITICAL Pauses not Theatrical :)
