This is the kind of person all americans love: enterprising, enthusiastic, good speaker, self-confident and innovative. The problem is that all these qualities coexisted with a serious defect: an unhealthy confidence in his own ignorance to the point of rejecting any warning from his peers.

"Maybe we could use modern materials" modern = cheaper. He pedalled this as some sort of innovative leap in deep sea submergence, when in reality his approach was tested and ruled out by industry standards. He wanted to keep costs as low as possible so that he could operate fleets of these death traps, at 2.5 million per dive.

The material he used was carbon fiber and titanium which is much more expensive than the standard military grade reinforced steel which is usually used in submarines. The problem is that carbon fiber is very weak against compressing forces compared to steel so the hull had none of the upsides of carbon fiber along with all the downsides which in the end lead to the vessel imploding after 3 rounds of repeat expeditions. I think where he did cut costs was on testing where instead of actually spending anything testing the sub he decided to spend it all on flashy materials…

I can see his passion and excitement for his project. He is very trusting in his submersible innovation (with it being the first to carry five people), you can see this by his excitement and confidence when talking about it. On the other hand, he had cut corners and paid employees cheap labour, rejected applications from experts in the field. And unfortunately the price was paid for not following health and safety protocols, not listening to expert advice (8wks prior, a submarine expert stated that the Titan's hull can only withstand pressure of up to 10,500ft deep). The titanic is 12,500ft. They lost contact 1hr 45m in to their descent. Which would have them at about 11,300ft, when they suddenly imploded.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I genuinely feel bad for this guy. This was obviously a lifelong dream for him & he’s clearly very passionate about both the Titanic and deep sea exploration in general. He obviously believed in this technology and thought the sub was safe. Of course, I agree he made a series of poor decisions in the name of innovation and this could’ve been completely avoided. I just feel bad that people are calling him a monster and that he’s being remembered for the opposite of what he spent his life trying to achieve, and that his family has to see that. I'd have to disagree he made those decisions solely in the name of innovation. I'd even argue he did that out of greed. He fired then sued the guy who raised actual, logical concerns for the vessels, he ignored myriad of strength testings which are supposed to be industry standard / bare minimum, he kept on using the same design even though the vertical thrusters caused problems with the communication system which resulted in hours upon hours of disconnection between the vessel and the support ship on the surface etc. Stockton Rush could have started his journey with his heart at the right place and it's still tragic 5 ppl died in this incident, but no, when it goes into the history book he is not someone I'd want the next generation to look at in a positive light.

@@senor2930 it looked to me like Stockton Rush had a silver tongue. Even if the passengers were worried he was saying shut like “it’s safer than flying” and he’s got the credentials (not certifications though) so it seems to me it would be very easy for him to persuade you into getting on it. Especially if you’re a tourist and know nothing about the deep sea and what red flags to look out for. People get on roller coasters everyday expecting them to be safe but most people don’t know how a coaster is put together and how it works therefor don’t know what red flags to look for. Guy has all the qualities of a convincing person. Handsome, confidence, smooth speaker, good smile, full head of hair-yet his head is so far up his arse he couldn’t see the dangers of his little “experiment”.

He was able to con multi-millionaires and billionares, people who normally aren't fools so Stockton was an excellent snake oil salesman.

I'm really sad that he and his passengers died. Lots of people who have never created a job in their lives are now criticizing every move the OceanGate team made in hindsight. In some ways I can understand their criticism. I'm sure much of the safety-specific critique is absolutely made with merit. Safety should be number 1, we all know that. I have no doubt they cut corners and skipped due process and tried unconventional things that all introduced layers of risk. But my view is that the world needs people like Stockton Rush, people who defy convention a bit, who push boundaries, do things differently, take massive risks and try to move industries forward by being Mavericks. The engineers who are slating him and his team have wonderful experience in 'how it's always been done'. A mindset which needs carefully dovetailing with entrepreneurial vision and ambition and creativity and imagination. This was likely Stockton Rush's mistake. But do we need to denigrate him now because of it? Henry Ford once said that "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.'' So perhaps Carbon Fiber submersibles will lead the way in future, and OceanGate was a step on that path... who knows. The appeal to tradition is a dangerous anchor. It's important someone with a great big pair of balls sticks their neck out and tries something new occasionally. When Elon Musk eventually sends people to Mars, some of them will die. Some will be blown apart on the launchpad and others will die on landing or during re-entry. Others will die of the harsh Martian conditions due to accidental exposure and some poor soul will be flung off into the void of infinite space during an EVA. Will we all take to the interwebs to smash his reputation to bits as a result? Ideally, we learn to accept the inevitable individual failures within the context of broader achievement; without cheapening the legacies of people who actually try to create value.

I fully understand what you're saying, that in order to innovate and push ourselves to the next level, a degree of risk will almost always be required. I agree with that, but I'm hearing from people that Stock Rush did not fully test his submersible and that the Titan was only an experimental vehicle, so he had no right to take clients for rides. More importantly, it wasnt certified to go that deep, it dosent meet industry safety standards and regulations. Why didnt he just test it more or get it certified first before inviting rich people to go inside his deep sea death tube? Whether it was ignorance or arrogance that made him do it, that's not something anyone can justify. Reasonable risk taking is brave, but unreasonable risk taking is just stupid.

Carbon fibre was not inovation, but extreme stupidity. This stubborn egomaniac ignored all the advice of experts who already had experience with this material, especially with the joining of different materials. The people who died with him were lulled into a false sense of security by trusting this maniac, on top of that, all the advertising was devoted to the safety of this carbon can. So no, the world doesn't need stubborn self-absorbed egomaniacs.

I’m no expert but I don’t think that a lighter submersible was a good idea for the type of pressure and the kinds of underwater currents it has to withstand.

I’m realizing that most of the submersibles that go down that far are spherical so the pressure remains even - wondering if the composite could have withstood the repeated stresses if it weren’t a capsule shape. Just like most, I know nothing of what I speak but there just so much info being dumped it’s hard to parse it all.

@@CrookDanny Wouldn't matter, carbon fiber is only good if the pressure comes from within, like gas canisters made of carbon fiber. Pressure from within pulls on the fiber, which the fibers are strong for. Sending it down below the sea, the pressure is now on the outside which compresses the fiber, which it is not strong. Then you have two different materials mated with glue, CF and titanium. Two different materials that deform differently under compression.
