Making a Paccar MX13 Rear Seal Tool Part 1

We had a late-model Peterbilt with a Paccar MX13 engine come in the shop that needed a clutch, and when we had the transmission out we found that it needed a rear main engine crankshaft seal. Heavy truck specialty tools are quite expensive and often need long shipping times to get here. It is not uncommon for small shops to not have every seal installer and special tool on hand. As we did not have the special seal installer to put the new seal in I was asked if I could make one.
As the machining portion of the video got longer than I had expected the video is broken into two parts. Hope you find it interesting, and as always, thanks for watching!

Thanks Matty, we're all doing well, hope you are too. I was surprised how well the Mysterium was finishing up too. And yes, these things are very pricey as you would know from being in trucking for as long as you were.

That's not a bad idea at all, would definitely be worth it - I now have enough bits to make up a torch setup, just need bottles and a few small parts and then will have a torch at home.

Excellent work Everett. What is the reason for taking the tool off-centre when chamfering the inner edge? Always looking to learn and not seen that done before. Take care and thank you.
@TimeWasted8675309
@TimeWasted8675309 4 жыл бұрын
If the inner chamfer diameter is smaller and the tool is on center, the radius of the part might contact the bottom of the tool, so raising it up helps to give a little more clearance. In this case that diameter was fairly large so maybe didn't need to raise the tool (hard to tell on video) but that's maybe the habit and reason that Everett did this? I know I do that on my lathe with smaller inner diameters and a large facing tool, rather than reaching over and getting a smaller tool.
@EverettsWorkshop
@EverettsWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Warren is spot on - to chamfer an inside edge when I'm being too lazy to change out the tool I just raise up the current tool to avoid rubbing. It just helps if you don't have a brain fart and forget to put it back on center, lol . . .

Thanks goodness you can find material at work! Always makes me flinch when dealing with large interrupted cut - no way round it though often. Haha - not on center with tool - fear not - done that myself :)

I actually had both of those pieces in my personal stash - between scrap metal bins, local auctions, and buddies saving stuff for me I REALLY need to reorganize the materials bin, lol! And yes, I am sometimes a slow learner, figured to leave it in so people got a laugh.

Thanks Dave, the press portion was done on my phone and the sound was lousy on it, I know. There were a few things in post-production that I found had problems in putting this video together but I did the best with what was there. Hopefully as I get the hang of the new-to-me second camera things will improve over time. My buddy who owns the shop worked at a Pete dealer for a number of years before starting his own place, so a lot of our business is Pete/Kenny platforms.

I noticed on the floor behind you a load of swarf (have the same thing here), I bought a magnetic broom. Mitigates walking swarf in the house and the ensuing record of sore feet. I must admit the odd bit still gets in the house - so an occasional rendition of the previous mentioned refrain... I enjoy your vids... Cheers Glenn

Lol, my Better Half is unimpressed with me when the swarf migrates into the house, for sure. I finally got the floor cleaned up a bit better and now it's less of an issue. My shop vac is my friend, lol

Would it have been possible/practical/useful to rough turn that heavy disc to a better (but not precise) disc as an early operation, to reduce the vibration?

It totally would, and I had thought about it, but to be completely honest it was laziness that won out. I didn't want to take the time to indicate it in again, lol

Why do you raise your tool to chamfer inside?
@EverettsWorkshop
@EverettsWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
It's to get a little clearance on the bottom of the tool - to do a small chamfer it works well, one just needs to remember to return the tool to center line, lol
