Why everyone ignore "she is still 23" in the song, that's the most specific thing she said in the song. When she was 23, media and millions of people told her to move on from the heartbreak she was going through at that time, and told her to stop writing breakup songs and find a new perspective.

I think that Evermore is definitely more based in fictional stories. Folklore is very much Taylor processing the trauma of losing her past albums, grieving her relationship with Scott, dealing with a spite towards everything Scooter, media and others did to her as well as escaping all of it by thinking of the future of her art, her relationship with Jo and with her fans too. Every single song on Folklore is inspired by her life. It's actually like Reputation 2.0 but this time around, Taylor decided she would avoid diving into the drama that happened to her by hiding her own stories behind metaphors and fictional characters. One of the main criticism of Reputation was that it was very unrelatable to others and too focused on the drama surrounding Taylor, so i think Taylor has learnt from this and made an album that was just as personal to her as Reputation, but she promoted it as a collection of fictional stories, which was super clever. Evermore on the other hand, appears to actually have some stories that were completely imagined. Ivy, Cowboy like me, Tolerate it, Champagne problems, Tis the damn season, Dorothea, Right where you left me and NBNC all seem to be fully fictional. The rest of Evermore though is an extension of the themes from Folklore and in fact, I consider the song Evermore to be the real closer to both albums as it's the end of the healing process from the trauma and depression she has experienced in the past and while the song is heartbreaking (like the rest of Folkmore), it ends on a hopeful note. For this reason I just can't see Folklore and Evermore as separate albums. Without Evermore, you are left with no real closure to the story told on Folklore.
@frederiquegiguere24583 жыл бұрын
I love your take on evermore as the « closer » to both albums! It’s really one of my favorite songs from Taylor and it’s really like she’s saying : even after all the drama, the cries, the hurt, the loses, etc. there really is light at the end of the tunnel and allllll of the bad in life isn’t forever. As much as I adore hoax as a song (the lyrics are out of this world) it just felt really sad and like if something was missing; it’s like we didn’t have « closure » on all the stories… With the lakes it’s so whimsical and airy, it was the perfect song to sort of keep us in that universe that she created.
@megimihaylova983 жыл бұрын
Really cool ideas, I enjoyed reading them! Evermore is my favorite of the two, I love the reoccurring ideas of closure throughout it. I would argue that Cowboy Like Me is about her and Joe but in a western theme, tolerate it is about Abigail along with some similar feelings in past relationships for taylor, and Right Where You Left Me draws heavily from her past pivotal moments with a more relationship theme to tie the song together.
@jankova00133 жыл бұрын

Right where you left me is such a good example of Taylor using a fictional narrative to convey emotions she has DEFINITELY felt before. Not just the heartbreak, but facing judgment for being heartbroken. She was 23 during the red era and that was PEAK “Taylor only writes about her exes” discourse time. She’s also talked about feeling “frozen” at the age she got famous and I feel like this song is her imagining what turn her life could have taken if she’d never managed to unfreeze herself!

Red was released when she was mid 22. She is talking about person she dated in red era and the heartbreak which happened at age 23. Because she said " she is still 23, and you are sitting in front of me" After that breakup she was criticized by media and millions of people told her to find new perspective, everyone told her to move on from the guy nd stop writing songs about xbfs. Like I saw so many news from that time which literally said the same words " common move on, we are bored" I think she is talking about that phase of her life.
@jankova00133 жыл бұрын
I feel like it's about Scott. As she said the bonus tracks are two different endings to a relationship and when it ends you usually go back and forth between moving on and being still stuck on how things could be and what went wrong. The "she's still 23 inside her fantasy how it was supposed to be" is in my opinion about Scott and how everything was great before 23, she was the one he wanted and then how he didn't support her going pop and thinking how things started to go in the wrong direction. And he has a wife and kids and Christmas and she just minds her bussiness and even tho it's been so long it still hurts and he can reach out if he thinks he got it wrong. but I also agree that it's about what you wrote in your comment, I think she combined the two things and wrapped it up as a break up so it would be relatable.

I think closure is way more specific as to who it’s about than it appears. And I 100% think that person is Karlie. First there’s the connection between “she’s a crook who was caught” and the “guilty, guilty.” It’s also just intriguing for Taylor to choose those specific words when Karlie is in-laws with Jared Kushner/Ivanka Trump, especially since she was writing this around election time last year. Karlie also left Scooter Braun’s management late last year and has really had no public or social media interaction with him this year, which puts the “it wasn’t right, how it all went down, looks like you know that now” in a different context. She is also the one who best fits the “wrinkle in your new life.” She got married, had a kid, got a new friend group. And yet every interview she’s done she’s been asked about Taylor, and she’s gone out of her way to “smooth things over” by claiming they’re on good terms. She says this in 73 questions, Watch What Happens Live, etc. I also think Scott and Scooter are narcissists that will never admit it wasn’t right for the fight with her masters to go down like this. In my opinion they aren’t losing sleep at night even though they should be, and they are not writing apology letters, which is why Taylor goes on to say Scott is sitting on his throne in his palace of bones praying to his greed. 😅

Something interesting I noticed about the song Evermore is the lyric changes after “and I was catching my breath” - first it’s “starting at an open window, catching my death” indicating that she’s inside, looking outside through a window. Next time it’s “barefoot in the wildest winters” indicating she’s now gone outside, into the storm, away from the warmth and safety of shelter. After the stormy bridge, the third rendition comes as “floors of a cabin creeping under my step” which shows that she’s gone back inside, where it’s warm and safe, especially with the connotation of the word ‘cabin’ :)

I love the theory saying that Closure is written from Tom Hiddleston's pov after Taylor maybe wrote to him to apologize : - "the shape of your name still spells out pain" could refer the whole "i love taylor shirt" thingy - "across the sea that you put between you and me" could be about the fact that after their break-up Taylor was in the US and Tom in the UK (and it parallels False God where the ocean separating Taylor and Joe very clearly is the Atlantic ocean) - "don't treat me like some situation that needs to be handled" really works in this context too knowing how Tom was way more into their relationship than her - and the english accent that she seems to have in the chorus (can't really say myself but people say she has one so...why not) could refer to Tom being the one expressing his feelings I think it suits very well the whole "story written from other people's perspective" that Folklore et Evermore work with

I love revisiting these breakdown videos. I always pick up on something new that I maybe didn’t process before. Talking through the song “evermore”, the part where you identify the “you” in and “you were there” as her fans… I think that’s really astute. I always assumed it was Joe she was talking about… that he was the one who was there for her as she went through that dark time in 2016. And that may be true for the song as well, but going with the idea that it was the fans she’s thinking about in the “you”, that ties in then so strongly with how I always interpreted the “you” in “cardigan” to be the fans as well. So putting together “in the cracks of light, I thought of you” from “evermore” with the light that she follows throughout the “cardigan” music video… the light in the video comes out of the old piano in the dreary cabin and takes her to a fairy tale place (the forest glen) where everything is lovely and bright and lush and the piano is grander and her music is just flowing out of it (like water) and she even looks like she’s performing a concert as opposed to just composing alone. This represents the early time in her career when everything was going great with her music and her fans and the media. But then she opens the piano bench this time (as opposed to opening the piano like in the first scene) and it takes her to the next scene where “out on waves, she’s being tossed”. I don’t know if the bench is like “Pandora’s box” or if it just represents her pursuing something other than her music and her true fans, or simply represents a departure from the track she was on (the shift from country to pop and the new scrutiny that brought her? The social popularity she craved in her NYC life with the “SQUAD”?), but it leads her away from that fairy glen where everything is good and right and now she’s drowning in the water. She was in control of the water before as it flowed out of the piano she played… now it has overtaken her. She has nothing to hold on to as she is tossed about. But then she sees the piano again and she clings to it for a long time (looking for “a line that she can just go cross”, perhaps?) until finally a crack of light again comes out from the piano and she follows it back home to the cabin where she is safe again. “And she was catching her breath, floors of a cabin creaking under her step”. She returns to where it is just her and the music again and not everything else… the media, the rivals, the fake friends and fickle “fans” who all abandoned her when she was canceled. And then she looks straight into the camera for the first time in the whole video… straight into the eyes of every true fan watching it and is like, “I see you. And you see me.” She had a “feeling so peculiar, this pain wouldn’t be for Evermore.” Cardigan and Evermore are sister songs… first time I’ve put that together. (Maybe someone else already figured this out! 😂)

I just wanna say that when Emily bought that keyboard and learned how to play Evermore on it, I also purchased one and Evermore is the first song I learned to play. 💖

Yay!! 🎉 FINALLY made it through ALL of your Taylor reactions/breakdowns!! Took me like half a year to do!! 😅 (I just discovered your channel earlier this year; hard to believe the year is ALMOST over now!! 🤯) But, anyway, I know I’m “a little late to the party”, BUT I found you now!! 😃👏🏻🎉

The banging and clanging at the beginning of Closure actually sounds like a train on tracks to me! I always imagine it like a cinematic shot of the train driving over the camera and then pulling away as the piano kicks in.

I really love that tay said that she considers right where you left me and it’s time to go as alternate epilogues for evermore because that’s exactly what they are. Her genius is unmatched.

Thank you guys so much for this breakdown of Evermore (the track)! It gave me such a bigger appreciation and connection to the song and it’s grown into my top 10 😳

I feel like the 2nd part of the first two verses in "time to go" are things she has experienced, the Karlie situation in the first verse and "Trying to stay for the kids when keeping it how it is will only break their hearts worse" about her parents divorce. Love your videos

Evermore for me has felt like a hand reaching out ~ past the anxiety of the pandemic, terrible heartbreaks, hopeless nights... this song feels like someone put words to the process of feeling gray and alone and then shifting to healing and being able to love again and be hopeful.

I think closure is about her friendship with Karlie. Just a weird feeling. I know it doesn't make sense with the sounds but hear me out. Like you said, she's never discussed Karlie in a song, until it's time to go. She flat out calls Karlie out in that. So why? Why now? Why after all this time is Karlie on her mind in that way? I think after folklore Karlie wrote Taylor a letter. Which sparked closure and the line in it's time to go. For me it's totally about Karlie.

I love you guys. I love the friendship you have. I have so much fun and get so much enjoyment out of watching your videos. There is something I want to tell you. In regards to the song closure on Evermore. Bonnie you were called and were on another you tubers video about Evermore. He had to call you guys and get expert help. He says that the song closure has all that banging because that is Kanyes music. No wonder I don't listen to his music lol. Just wanted to tell you. Keep up the good work with your channel. I believe that the two of you are the best in breaking down Taylor Swifts music. I have seen a lot of others but I prefer yours. Love you both.

Love love love your videos! A fact you didn't say, which is so genius in my opinion is how well the delux version songs connect. In I'm right where you left me, she sits in the restaurant forever, but then time to go comes on and he asks for the tab and it's time to go! Maybe in another universe she would have noticed that he looks at his friend like that and she goes so she is not be where he left her. So it could be the end to I'm right where you left me or the other possibility how it could have been. Greetings from Austria 😘

The 3rd verse in "it's time to go" makes me emotional bc i can really feel the pain and the betrayal she must have felt in the whole scott situation.

i literally cannot make it through marjorie without balling my eyes out. the way that Taylor perfectly captures her grandmother's spirit as well as the beautiful imagery in that offensive bridge just gets me every single time. the line 'should've kept every grocery store receipt cause every scrap of you would be taken from me' is my favourite from the song. the emotion behing that line is so incredible. as someone who has lost someone very dear to me in the last year, i will always think of them when i listen to marjorie and realise that those who we lose are never truly gone, and stay with us in spirit. so beautiful

If I’m not already crying, I definitely burst into tears at the every scrap of you would be taken from me. This song reminds me of my dad, who thank god is still alive and well but I just know this song encapsulates how I’d feel once the time comes. I absolutely love how she mentions “I complained the whole way there / the car ride back and up the stairs / I should have asked you questions, should have asked you how to be” because I think back to my childhood and it’s so relatable. My dad would take us to the coolest places and by the end I’d be complaining I’m tired, my feet hurt, I’m this, I’m that. I know children are just children but I carry a lot of guilt for all those wasted experiences being a little brat lol. Now that I’m an adult I appreciate so much more, naturally, and when my dad would drone on about history and I thought it was sooo boring now I find it fascinating and want to listen. To be honest I am just so grateful to Taylor for giving us these lessons that we can carry with us as reminders of how to appreciate the people we love before it’s too late.

I was exceptionally excited to hear you break down Marjorie, especially "Should've kept every grocery store receipt...". That song is so beyond chilling and haunting. It really is some of her best work, in my opinion.

hi from very far away!👋 (east coast USA) just finished this last Evermore breakdown Saturday, and was thinking yesterday about how it's almost 2 years since that release.... and then she went and announced Midnights last night....😭 I don't know what to do with all this excitement! as odd as it might seem, I only started actively listening to her music in early 2020 and so have never experienced this long wave of anticipation before a release.... how does one cope? immediately thought of you two while watching the vmas announcement clip earlier, and am wishing you (and anyone else seeing this!) merry joy on this most kick-ass of Monday mornings!
