the line “your midas touch on the chevy door” goes even deeper than you’d think king midas was the subject of a greek myth in which he was “blessed” by the gods to turn anything he touched to gold, but it was actually more of a curse because he had no control over what he “improved” with his touch. so, that implies he turned the chevy gold, whether on purpose or not. we know taylor loves her car metaphors, using them as a symbol for her relationships. so, we have a gold car; aka their relationship. it’ll look pretty and perfect to anyone on the outside, but if you’re the person trying to drive the car, you’re going to know it’s not practical and it’s not going anywhere bc golden cars aren’t meant to drive, adding to the “fucked in head” line and everyone viewing her as crazy for turning him down. IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT ITS SO MUCH WORSE AND WE GOT ALL OF THAT FROM ONE LINE?? god bless ms. swift.

the 'on your knees' line from champagne problems is so specific. because when somebody proposes they're only down on one knee. yet she said knees. and that may allude to the possibility of him begging on his knees trying to make this engagement successful. on the flip side, maybe this time he's no longer asking for her to say yes to the proposal, rather he just wants to make sense of what happened, but once again she couldn't give a reason. also, the juxtaposition of the first line 'you booked the night train for a reason' and 'and i couldn't give a reason' means so much because he always had a reason to be with her, but she was never able to give him that

When I first heard Champagne Problems I couldn’t believe that Taylor Swift wrote a song that so clearly explained how I felt when I turned down an engagement. It was many years ago. My BF was the son of a pastor, classically handsome, the nicest person you ever met, and just not my person. Someone actually dropped their glass, someone actually told me I wasn’t smart and never spoke to me again. But I went to grad school moved across the country and had a wonderful life. Sometimes the mental issues are because you are in the wrong relationship. The song also makes me think of Alice in wonderland and and how she refused an engagement and they thought she was mad.

"Evergreen our group of friends, don't think we'll say that word again" I agree that this line pertains to the break down of their friend group ("you go talk to your friends, talk to my friends" like you referenced in your evermore reaction video), but it also alludes to the two of them never being "friends" again after the breakup, which is one of the saddest parts of a relationship's ending. People hating on Lover because of Me! being the lead single from the album. The colourful imagery and superficial lyrics makes it seem childish and not meaningful enough compared to other albums of Taylor. But honestly, the essence of Lover album is Love, and many people are having problems even for loving themselves, so can’t really blame them really. For me Lover is another Masterpiece of Taylor that is under appreciated because of its era cut short by Folklore before even the album turned 1 year.

Taylor swift - if you want to YEE HAW Fearless- if you want to experience teen love and heartbreak Speak now- if you want to feel all aspects of love in a magical way RED- if you want to dance and cry at the same time 1989 - if you want to dance around your bedroom or go to the beach with your friends Reputation- if you want to be a BAD BITCH lover- if you want to feel happy, lovey and want to bop Folklore - if you want to escape the world and adventure into a fantasy land... and cry Evermore - if you want to feel like what folklore makes you feel but want dance to a few bops while maintaining lyrical perfection

In my school's music class, we were tasked to choose a song and break down its mood, tone, etc.. I chose “champagne problems” and this is a little chunk of what I came up with… “The whole song tackled serious matters but the piano arrangement at the end suddenly became playful. It’s like smiling after confessing you’re not okay, because even though you’re hurt, you would rather shrug it off because you believe that you’re personal issues are smaller compared to big problems in society such as poverty and corruption. Hence, champagne problems.” While here’s a little thought I had for “’tis the damn season” which is a song that has a special place in my heart… “If it’s all the same to you, it’s the same for me,” gives me a pride or egoistic vibe. It’s like the narrator is saying that if the other person doesn’t care enough for their situation, then the feeling is mutual because she doesn’t want to be the one who loves the other person more. Maybe her pride can’t take it. But once the other would reveal that he misses her, then that’s when she’ll allow herself to sulk into her real feelings and admit that she does love the guy because she’s assured that it isn’t one-sided. This can also be seen when she says “I won’t ask you to wait if you don’t ask me to stay,” wherein it seems like she doesn’t want to look desperate. So even if it hurts her, she’ll continue to leave the town because she doesn’t want to accept or doesn’t want it to be noticeable that she loves the guy more than he loves her

I actually do think that dorothea is from a male perspective purely because if we compare the songwriting to betty, tay seems to write male perspectives as super simple and straightforward whereas songs from the women's' perspective (cardigan/august/tis the damn season) are more complex and detailed and reflective because she as a woman is able to relate!!! Another thing about the Midas Touch lyric is that - even though it sounds ideal - the gift of everything you touch turning to gold can be tragic. Because in the story, King Midas touches his daughter(I think but it could be another family member) and she consequently turns into gold with no way of turning back. So I think it’s interesting that Taylor described it as ‘Midas touch’ for a few reasons. A) This person who Taylor sings about is probably a wonderful person who turns everything into something wonderful, or, like the song says, into gold. However, as we see in the myth, this can be a bad thing as Midas turns his daughter into gold. A living, breathing human into gold. Essentially, he just froze her - it’s like she ‘stopped working’ and broke like the relationship. A relationship is something someone would probably try to make gold, however, in the process of trying to make it perfect, it fell apart. Additionally, Midas is probably alone, alone with things of gold. This is similar to what the person would probably experience after trying so hard to make everything golden, they’re so alone amongst their golden memories. B) What I found SO interesting is that Midas’ whole gift IS a Champagne Problem. You would think that turning things into gold would be one of the best things to ever have. But it ISNT and people would definitely just dismiss the issues of having that power because people tend to be jealous of other people’s success. They wouldn’t except Midas’ problems. I just find that SO interesting especially since Taylor sings about the other person HAVING the Midas touch, HAVIING the Champagne Problems. Overall, I feel like Taylor’s saying that even though this person is golden and can turn things golden, they have their issues, and, in the end, the downside of this golden gift ruined them. People thought that this the girl would say yes to the proposal but she didn’t and that must mean that the relationship looked so pure and true. Maybe the love was just encased in gold, but it was really just dead and broken on the inside - like the daughter frozen in gold.
@TheLCJ823 жыл бұрын
Yeees,! Also. Midas touch on the Chevy door…means it doesn’t go anywhere. The car turns golden before it can be driven/ridden in! Hmmm a song about golden and driving. Wonder who it’s about. Lol

For Gold Rush: First, I think this is absolutely about Joe back when she was so convinced that he was too good for her. The hair falling into place like dominoes and the imagery of him being a contrarian - feels like when they were first getting together but not official yet - when she was afraid to be hurt. And that first line is for sure about sirens - being so inviting and beautiful and magical that men jumped to their deaths to be near them. She's saying that Joe (in her fantasies) was as magical and beautiful and tempting as a siren - so inviting she was almost willing to jump into shark-infested waters and die just to be closer to him. SO BRILLIANT

I'd like to say how amazing "Gold rush" is, not only because of the lyrics, the music is just so wonderful, I mean, at some point I felt like I was hearing an orchestra. The song has so many details that every time I'm listening, just keep finding new ones. Superior song 🙏

Honestly one of the best things about Taylor re-recording all her albums and releasing them now is that this time around we are old enough to buy alcohol and can drink responsibly at night after our day jobs, while we scream at the top of our lungs to relive our 16 year old heartbreaks.

Gold rush is basically Evermore’s Gorgeous 🤯
@elliemosteller29383 жыл бұрын
Honestly I do think she nods to cheating a few times. •Gorgeous- “there’s nothing I hate more than what I can’t have. Guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats…unless you wanna come along” while also stating in the song that she has a boyfriend. •Cruel Summer - “i don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you. And I snuck in through the garden gate every night that summer just to seal my fate” • Dont Blame Me - like the whole first half • Ivy - basically all of it but that’s hard because this could be just a story she thought up like she explained for those two albums.

"That's the best thing about living" literally my mantra to get through life. Whenever I break down I remind myself I have masterpieces from Taylor and they can be my reason to stay, even if they are my only reason. Like if I just live for one more day, I can listen to her music for one more day. We are really so blessed. 🧡

I agree with you! I love folklore and evermore. But there's just something about evermore that I can't explain why I prefer it over folklore
@kaylajones13703 жыл бұрын
Agree. Evermore has a power vibe that is different to the power vibe of folklore. Although equally superior and highly illegal each album hits differently for different reasons and that's what makes them perfection and Taylor swift a fucken genius 👏🙌👌❤

WAIT Goldrush gives me Red vibesss - firstly 'my face in a red flush' - anticipating feeling like she did on Red (her 'true breakup album') but also... 'I don't like that falling feels like flying til the bone crush' reminds me of 'loving him is like trying to change your mind once you're already flying through the free fall'. And of course Red is all about colours and Goldrush is all about gold gaaaah

When she said “My mind turned your life into folklore” I just wondered about the love triangle in folklore, how Joe started writing Betty’s lyrics first...so maybe a few songs are actually about HIS past love life! Idk I just like the idea of that haha

"Lost in the 'current' like a priceless wine" has TS looking up words that sound the same (i.e. currant) or synonyms. She's an analytical thinker and poet who is invested in the process. And you two keep the analysis going. Thank you!

'folklore is a better album but evermore has better songs' YESSSSSSSSSS, THIS!!!! I love Evermore more, but only because I didn't know Folklore existed...?!😅😳 So when you listen to Evermore first and Folklore after that, it hits sooooooo different......Going from the happy mode to the dark days of Folklore..... (I love Folklore now...). I kinda wish i knew about Folklore before I listened to Evermore...!! Keep it up girls....love all the theories and reaction!! Greeting from the Netherlands

also i think "my mind turns your life into folklore' does parallel how she turns joe's life and past into stories and weaves them into songs, kinda like how she did in invisible string or during rep like she's so infatuated with this person that she takes stories from his life as if they were folklore, imagines them further, elevates them. it kinda goes with "what must it be like to grow up that beautiful", she's imagining this person's upbringing and past, and turns it into tales as she's daydreaming about him

36:26 "You had a speech, you're speechless Love slipped beyond your reaches And I couldn't give a reason" I feel like that third line is perfect duality. Because he is left speechless in spite of being so prepared to commit to the relationship, but "I couldn't give a reason" is also another form of speechlessness, and for her it is specifically because she was unprepared to commit to the relationship.

Her vocal range in willow maybe also symbolizes a willow (tree) as well... Deep, down, grounded in the verses and then very high in the choruses like the branches up there when she completely indulges in this love and bends right to his wind.
@meggzilla0092 жыл бұрын
"The more that you say the less I know" I also think this lyrics refers to what she THOUGHT love was supposed to be (the feeling of hot and cold passion from both 1989 and Rep) and as Joe is teaching her about a whole different world she is also realizing she had no idea what love could really be. 🥺😭☠️💙💚💛🧡💜❤❤️🔥💔💖

* I googled it and FYI Aaron Dessner posted a picture of a handwritten list of songs for big red machine on the 31. of July 2020 on his instagram (one week after the release of folklore) and under the headline "big red machine II (sure things)" Dorothea was included :)
