I was pretty shocked by the email. 2 devices is pretty slim when you count a desktop computer. Just 3 devices even would have been considerably better. I think they're shooting themselves in the foot a little here, as Evernote's power is that ability to access things from everywhere. And 2 devices isn't really enough to show that off. The web version is a decent workaround.

But make sure you understand...your desktop does NOT count towards your simultaneous device limit (and I don't think web does either- so you can use web access on a tablet and get around that). So if I was still on Free, I could make it work.

Hi Eric, Sadly, I believe you're wrong. The desktop client does count toward your device limit. In fact, if two people (ex. Married couple) use the desktop client on the same Mac, it counts as a device for each user. Read here for more details: help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/218558068

I believe I made a mistake to a couple people here...I think I mistakenly said it was the desktop client they doesn't count towards your device count...it is the web client that doesn't. sorry for the mix up.

I just migrated all of my Evernote to OneNote last evening. With the new pricing, Evernote alone is almost the cost of the entire Office 365 suite. I was an avid Evernote user, but cannot justify such a steep increase.

I've been using Evernote since 2005 and a premium user for at least five years (maybe longer). The recent price increase is outrageous. IMHO there's no way Evernote is worth the price they are asking for the vast majority of users. A Microsoft Office subscription with OneNote 2016 + all the office apps + 1 TB of cloud space blows them out of the water. In the past, I have recommended this software to many people -- no more. The changes are beyond foolish and Evernote will crash and burn now.

I know a lot of people agree with you. Let's see how everyone feels after migrating to OneNote, I do not think it does the same thing Evernote does, BUT depending on how you use the app, it may well serve. Be sure to let me know what you think after you have migrated.

OneNote does have tags and search, and plus screen clipping, so they are not set apart on that front. What does set them apart; OneNote ties in Office products like excel and word, within the note, and web sites you clipped from. As far as i know OneNote works on all windows and android based devices. As to pricing, Free Vs an unnecessary utility bill. I bought some app's for 2.99, maybe 9.99 the most, with update and support. To be honest, S Note, which came with Samsung Note 3, would of been King, if they had a PC version. Anyway, I m going to still use all these product, they all work. $8 a month is still going towards my phone service bill

Nice video as always. Though Evernote have increased but I think Premium users wont mind much. But again they should have introduced something big in the app and then justified the cost. One thing I want to point out here is, just because you want premium doesnt mean you have to pay for whole year. With purchase of any evernote product they give points to extend premium subscription. Even new Samsung galaxy tabs comes with 1 year free premium. Also any referral and new sign ups do come with subscription for a month of premium. Adding all those perks doesnt make it too damn expensive !!

Thanks for that helpful update Steve.After using both Evernote and Pocket for some time now, I find that I need both. Evernote serves me well as a repository for all kinds of stuff, and does a great job usually. But sometimes it messes things up in webclippings -- text on top of other text or images etc. Pocket is great for saving articles for later reading. It saves them in a very neat layout and clear, readable font, and strips away all the irrelevant junk. It also has a text-to-speech feature, but that's still in its infant stage and needs more development.I use the free version in both Evernote and Pocket and find this combination most favorable.

If you wanna dance you gotta pay the band. Only a fool would stake the success of their business on a free app. Evernote is stupid cheap for all it does- $5/mo is not worth debating. I'd pay $20 and not whine- if anything they are leaving a lot of potential revenue on the table.

It will be interesting to see how this affects their overall revenue. They will lose some free users, which has no short term impact on revenue. It may be that very few free users convert to paid anyway. I think I was a free user for about 2 hours before I went premium. Overall, this change gives me increased hope that they will be around for a long time.

The premium plan, I guess it works out more like 45%. The last renewal I had was $47.80 US dollars, and the next renewal in March will be 69.99 so that works out to a 46% increase, according to my accountant wife! :) All these subscriptions sure seem to add up as part of the yearly budget!!! Yikes!

I'm confused Steve. Several of the comments seem to imply that the desktop app does NOT (I'm not shouting...singing) count toward the two device limit on the free version. But your video seems to imply that it does...thus you suggest using the web app on your desktops. I have an iPhone and iPad. I also have a MBP and iMac. So what is REALLY (dance to the music) going to happen to me? Will I have to switch to the Evernote web app on my MBP and iMac or can I continue to use, with no loss of syncing functionality, the desktop apps? Also, just my opinion of course, no one wants to be "nickeled and dimed" with price increases every couple months. But I also believe it is not prudent to raise the price of a product in the 40%ish range. To use the Starbuck's analogy, how would you feel if your Skinny Vanilla Latte was $2.00 on Tuesday and closing in on $3.00 Wednesday? Sweet Judy no more. Please no more!!

To be honest, at least for me, the worst part is not about price raising; it is about price raising with no new features for a long time. I fully understand that people need money to survive and provide us services, but at least they should be transparent to us about what are they doing. Even if they take the money buying new storages and servers, I'm happy to pay for that, but they should tell us. It can be as simple as a forum talking about beta features.

I guess for years I've remained skeptical about these kinds of apps, in the sense that I wondered if they would be a short-term wonder that will be gone in 3-5 years, and therefore I was hesitant to spend much money on them. Evernote, though, at this point has proven itself as a platform that's here to stay for a while. So I think they're justified to tighten up their pricing model. I think the type of user who actually feels like they need more than 2 devices connected, is probably a fairly heavy user in terms of the data that they generate.... so yeah, I think they ought to be willing to pay.

I am the last one to complain about paying for something so useful as Evernote, but the new pricing makes me seriously worried that Evernote will tank and all my notes will go along with it: The free version now offers next to nothing over OneNote or even Apple Notes. Why should a potential customer even bother to install the apps in the first place? Nice green icon? Tags that can be replaced by hashtags everywhere else? And if you don't get people to try the free version, how do you ever get people to pay for the premium ones? To add insult to injury, the mid-tier plan is just outrageous: $35 for allowing me to download notes to my own local storage, allowing me to send stuff via e-mail and *gasp* get support over e-mail? No PDF annotation or searching. No searching through office documents. If you want that, you have to pay the price of MS Office 365... WHY??? Right now we have a company that offers no incentives for new users to use its product and which charges an office-suite price for basic features with added presentation mode and business-card scanning. Wow, what a business model. I am afraid that what we are seeing right now is the Nokia-fication of Evernote. Ex-Google CEO makes so many "wise" corporate decisions, that the whole thing will eventually have to sell out to Google or go bankrupt... Rant over.

I'm worried that the whole idea of charging more for paid while giving less in free is not the way to build a sustainable business. So I looked at OneNote and imported my notes. Thank you for this video. I am a free account user and that suffices for me on all aspects except the two devices limit now just imposed as I have a PC, tablet and phone. However I only use Evernote on my PC and my phone when I am home and on my tablet and phone when I am travelling. Does revoking access just sign me out or does it actually disable access altogether? So my question is can I revoke access to my tablet when I am home and then reinstate the access when I am about to travel and at that time revoke access to my PC? Then reverse the process when I am home again? I like being able to access something in EN without having to open a browser on my PC when I need the info from there. Thanks

What pisses me off is that some "Pro" services cost them 0$ to maintain yet they put them behind a paywall. For example, I understand the 60MB upload limit (more data = more bandwidth), or that other services like Google Drive come with a premium fee (because more storage = more maintenance costs), or that an Express Delivery services come with a premium fee (faster delivery = faster vehicles). But limiting Evernote to two devices? Why? To what practical end, if not asking for money? Don't get me wrong, I acknowledge that Evernote is a business and I am TREMENDOUSLY grateful for their free service. I agree with Dotto: it shows good business sense indeed to tread the fine line between Free users and Premium users. **But** it irritates me to no end that Free features are so arbitrary, so randomly cherrypicked. There's a reason why alternatives exist.

Living in a small community, I am a believer in "support local", for example, supporting your local hardware store (tool store). Although I dislike paying for online services, this doesn't surprise me. Resetting data limits for users on a monthly basis must take up tons of room. The money for that has to come somewhere. Personally, I still think it's still a good deal. Hopefully the pricing stays at this level for a while.

As a premium user who will stay a premium user even at the new price (a 40% increase is no small matter) I hope some of this additional money will go toward security, primarily client-side encryption. It would also have been nice to receive the notification about the price increase a few months in advance instead of 20 days in advance of my renewal. It could have made a big difference if the price increase had been big enough to make me look for an alternative to migrate to.

So you sound bullish on EN. I am considering using EN as I haven't found anything else that does quite what it does but am concerned about going "all in" on a technology that might not be around in the future. It sounds though that you are pretty upbeat about their future. Are you also excited about the management changes? Do you feel they are going in the right direction now? One of my main concerns is security. Do you feel that will improve with the new CTO? Thank you.

I've been a premium user for a few years now. The only real attractive feature premium has to offer over the Plus is search within pdf and office docs. My main concern is that I've become heavily invested in this app/service and there is no guarantee they will not increase fees by another 50% next year...

of course I was just about to start loading evernote for the first time.. SO, is there any decent alternative? Mainly I need notes, calendar reminders, and ez ability to move notes to different places or repriortize the order easily.. and mostly ez input, I hate scrolling calendars and such that take too much time.. best would be voice input converted to a note or calendar entry.. some of us have to find our glasses, put em on, and type every note which is more of a hassle than just jotting it on a pad, so am hoping to find a reminder-note-calendar app - not each separate either - that is intuitive and super fast.. heard of Due? Appreciate your unbiased rec.. mac and iphone user mainly.. so prefer to avoid as much microsoft products as possible.. so what else beside onenote, google keep? or... any suggestions for simple notes with calendar reminder function with super emphasis on fast ez input and/or voice to text

Interesting suggestion to use the web version on my computer (Mac), which somehow does not register as an extra device. But I am currently in the process of moving some of my Evernote stuff to Onenote and some to Google Drive. Both are free so far. I'm also deleting a lot of the stuff (4600 notes!) that had become redundant anyway. I'm sure that this move will help Evernote by making a lot of free users clear out their stuff from their account. Not sure how many new paying customers they'll get though. Enticement is generally better than removing features as a selling point. Combine that with a near doubling of the price and I'm sure that they'll lose a lot of users. But sometimes, that can be a good thing for a company.

I will no longer be using Evernote. I think the company is dying and they are struggling to stay afloat. Long ago I got tired of reading the forums for feature requests and Evernote responding that they wanted to keep things simple. Then they start coming out with things like presentation mode which, although nice and useful for some, did not ever work as advertised for me. Also, the PC-based editor was lacking to say the least and the web-based editor was just plain rotten. I think the big deal breaker for me was when I tried to update and the charge was denied. In checking with my bank they flagged it as fraud because the charge was coming from a foreign country and looked suspicious. Sorry, Evernote, but I do not want to have to coordinate your charge with my bank every time I need to renew. I preached praises to Evernote while I was using it, but I would not pay $90.00/year for premium now. I think I will just go back to good old-fashioned paper, bookmarks, and hand-written notes.

I was quite livid with Evernote when they announced the basic limitations until I realized that they aren't counting anybody who uses a third-party tool using their API. So even if the two-device maximum (when much of their user base owns at least three devices) is somewhat sleazy, there is still an officially sanctioned work around. I switched my main computer from the Evernote app to Alternote, and that solved the biggest of the issue. In regards to pricing, I think it was a bit strange that they jacked the cost up without justifying it to the end user. If you're going to make your subscription service expensive, then there needs to be some sort of incentive for the end user to get on board. New features, bug fixes, etc. I mean, all the people who have jumped ship for OneNote and GoogleKeep will likely be disappointed when they realize what a downgrade both of those programs are. OneNote can't even do proper tagging. Only NimbusNotes comes even close to EN, but even they are missing the vital OSX desktop client. Evernote really could have handled this better, but the outrage seems overblown in comparison to the supposed crime.

Here is my problem.... Evernote has never really been a truly "finished" product... it still doesn't do everything WE as users still need it to do. When I'm told that they are updating their pricing due to them wanting to do more in research and development etc... We are paying for a service... we shouldn't be paying more and not getting more out of the price. To say I'm very upset is a understatement. It's not even about the price per say (although it is a bit) but it's mainly of the feeling I have from them thinking they can take advantage of us users who have brought them up to this point. I'm SERIOUSLY thinking of moving away from evernote... and I"m a HUGE FOLLOWER of their company.... I was very loyal! But I don't like what they did.... it's them stating to us that the users come second to their new dedication to business first. And I KNOW they are a business first and foremost but my main reason for my loyalty is that sense of community and family I had with evernote which is now GONE!

I agree about the pricing. I agree that they're being fiscally responsible to have pay versions. I took up the offer for Premium at 50% (which made it cheaper than Plus) when they had that special last year. When it comes time to renew, I will likely go to Plus since most of the Premium only features aren't ones I use (but it has been nice to try them). I am very impressed with Evernote and will continue to pay for at least the Plus version. I use it to manage my craftroom stash. I use the offline access to help me not buy duplicates of stuff I already have *laugh*. I use the web app on the laptop for my non-creative day job and have even used that access to design projects while I've been trapped in boring meetings *laugh* Being able to search on tags and see (pictures in the notes) what I have is great. I am, though, amused by how wrong the OCR gets some stamps and things when I get results in my searches that are baffling (until I remember the OCR).

well, OneNote is the way to go now. OneNote is Evernote on Steriods. but, Evernote may of been faster and simpler if you develop a system for using their tags and they limit the way you can stack notebooks. give me ads than, you still make money, or just let me buy the program, charge a subscription for corps or people who want crazy storage space
@dottotech
@dottotech 8 жыл бұрын
I disagree, OneNote is fantastic especially if you use a Surface, but it is not Evernote, Evernotes tags and search plus the web clipper set it apart. IMO. As to pricing, I do not understand people who really use an app like this being concerned about $7 or $8 a month If you buy it you will just have to shell out again when they update it, or the OS changes.
@jmac2050
@jmac2050 8 жыл бұрын

Businesses always get greedy. They get you hooked on a decent program, then start jamming the price and cutting services. You can expect more cuts to service and increases in price in the future. Don't rely on this program, keep looking for alternatives.

And when you find the alternative what will happen then Mike? They will be looking to turn a profit, JUST LIKE EVERNOTE, and you will be out in the cold again. Get your head around fair pay for fair service! Paying for a service you use every day is not a hardship. it is a transaction.

I may be able to reduce down to two devices but I don't see myself letting Evernote go. I've got too much on it at this point. I do think that they are expensive compared to other web/mobile devices however. I also wonder what Steve will say if Evernote's development doesn't improve now that they are forcing people to pay for their service at all levels if they want to use it on more than two devices. I think charging is becoming a trend for web/mobile apps. One that I don't like. Why can't everyone be like Google.

I love this question Issac, First of all if Evernote does not support or improve I will be critical and say so As to Google, no comparison, Google makes their money by collecting every detail they can about you, your habits, your tendencies online, they. They Scrape information and use your data to market to you and others, gather every little bit of data they can about to you to monetize down the road. I would gladly pay to avoid that, in fact if I could pay Google for service and retain more privacy I would gladly do that!

HI Steve We have to be upfront here and i think you were a little as you said you have invested a lot of time and effort. This product is a cash generator for your business re your courses. I love EN and was a member in its first month and signed up 5 months later. So you are are going to sing it praises not just because it is good but as a cash generator as well (no problem with that as you are in business) but just saying you have a double edged meaning to this topic. For me, EN as a product / business has changed and not for the better withdrawn and not customer focused and the forums and moderators are awful. I have to admit i hate Cloud services re monthly payments and if you talk about a one off it sounds fine. But Steve, if you go through your videos which i guess, are all affiliate links i would be paying between $100 to $1000 a month on subscription models. Some people don't have that cash to throw about nice if you have. So people look for the best solution for their buck. I reluctantly went over to OneNote with 14000 notes and i have to say the first 14 days was painful because i was trying to make OneNote into Evernote. After realising my errors and using OneNote as it can be i have to say i love it and in some areas leaves EN in its tracks, Microsoft i quietly been improving this in the background and with a few addons it is brilliant.It is free and with the saving of the cost of EN premium i can have Office 365 for business.Now that is a great saving and look what i get for the same money. It is a no brainer to me and i would ask other EN die hards just give it a try. I used side by side for a month just in case but i have now deleted EN as OneNote does everything and more i need.I know you will not agree as it makes no financial sense to your business. But some people have to budget and monthly subscriptions when added up eat into the household / business budget. Keep up the good work.Dale PS Have you reviewed Onenote recently?
@dottotech
@dottotech 8 жыл бұрын
Dale, thanks for the input, but you are dead wrong about several things. I have no affiliate relationship with Evernote, and have never taken a penny from them. I do make money from my courses, but that would be the case if I supported or criticised the pricing. I am a vocal critic of many Evernote practices, including security and encryption. I am a big fan of OneNote, if I used a Surface I would probably choose it, but on balance EN fits me better (Tags, I need my tags) Thanks for taking the time to share!
@daleholden
@daleholden 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve Sorry, i was not suggesting you had an affiliate link with EN i was referring to the other products where you upfront tell your viewers you do, What i was trying to say it makes no sense from your business model to turn people away from EN. If you are selling courses on EN you want your viewers to keep using it. I understand that but in relation to you liking Onenote i have not heard you make any mention of it as an alternative! I am not sure if you are aware but 1000's have made the move to OneNote from EN so it might be worth you giving it a review the pros and cons (trying not to be biased :) of moving over. I know you might think it is counter productive but from watching you for years you seem to give all products a review. Plus if you like it i am surprised you have not done one! Keep up the good work Dale

Thank you Steve- A reasoned and well-presented segment on this issue. It has been absolutely AMAZING to read the commenting going on over in the EN forums. People have been (metaphorically) jumping off buildings over this! And even after things are explained again and again...and again and again...they are still not getting it! "Well, EN is no longer free!" (No, it still is...just not the way YOU want it to be) "Well, I can only have it on 2 devices!" (No, you can only actively sync to 2 devices at any one time but that doesn't include Web or the desktop client) "EN keep taking stuff away from us- they made a PROMISE and they should never change!" (Yes, they've reduced *some* features, but added others so all in all...*I* think it nets out). Yes, the way they announced this bothered me. Yes, the amount of the price increase on Premium bothered me. But then I looked at the alternatives. And *in my opinion* I don't see anything out there that can match Evernote. Period. While you do have the integration of MS Office, you do lose several features that to me, make EN like search...)I did decide to try OneNote...No. For people who just use it for a minor amount of notes and none of the features that set EN apart, yeah...exporting to OneNote probably no great shake. For me, it was a mess. I have 8Gb of notes, in about 9 main stacks and over a hundred sub notebooks, I was only able to get through half the import before it crashed, and what it did import...yikes. I lost my Stacks,my tags and trying to figure out how to re-org everything will take too long. Oh yeah, don't forget that minor ceiling of having to share my OneDrive space with everything else. In the end...DEAL BREAKER. In the end, perhaps people have some legitimate reasons for leaving...fine. But I believe there are some...who just can't stand that they're not getting a (as) free lunch anymore. Eric
