Everton's 10-point deduction for breaching Premier League spending rules has been reduced to six points after an appeal. The independent commission appeal resulted in a partial success for the club, moving them to 15th place in the league, five points clear of the relegation zone. The Premier League had initially sought a 12-point deduction. The appeal board upheld two of the nine grounds presented by Everton and substituted the original 10-point deduction for six. The club admitted the breach but was shocked and disappointed by the severity of the punishment. Everton and Nottingham Forest face a second panel hearing for alleged breaches of profit and sustainability. The reduction in points comes at a critical time for Everton, as they await a Premier League decision on a proposed takeover by 777 Partners. The club has been frustrated that the latest potential sanction includes accounts for two of the three years for which they have already been punished. Everton is confident it would have escaped a second charge if assessed only on last year's financial dealings.
