No they werent if you now why Bowls came into existence. Bowls were never games, but exhibitions. And they were made to lure fans of populated places to places that were quite small as a Tourist attraction and lead to a population boom in each city. Lets go over each one. Rose Bowl - First was held in 1902 but did not draw enough people so they went with other attraction to lure tourist to Pasadena. Next was in 1917 when College Football became more popular. The Rose Bowl (the stadium) was built in 1922. The Population of Pasadena in 1920 was 45,000. In 1930 it was 76,000. The Rose Bowl game, brought about an almost doubling of the population. Orange Bowl - The Orange Bowl started in 1935, the Population of Miami in 1930 was 110,000. By 1940 it became 172,000 and by 1950 it was 249,000. Sugar Bowl - The Sugar Bowl started in 1935, the Population of New Orleans in 1930 was 458,00. By 1960 it had grown to 627,000 people. Cotton Bowl - The Cotton Bowl started in 1937, the Population of Dallas in 1930 was 260,00. By 1960 it was 679,000. The 4 major bowls were NOT meant to attract the best teams, it was meant to attract the most populated teams with fans.

@@TRockNFL Ok, Thanks. I just remember 1987, when it was just so rare to get #1 / #2 meeting each other - as your video demonstrates. I graduated NU in '85, and in 1987 - while I had moved to CA - I vividly remember 'us' being #1, and #2 OU coming to Lincoln, in November - and dominating us... 'We' scored 7 early, and lost 17-7. I still remember the promos for that game (CBS). From 1985 - 1987, OU lost only 3 games, each to Miami... pretty much a changing of the guard, and of the game itself - to much more pro-style / passing. Anyway, thanks for this video - and the one on the decline of the BCS. Good stuff! 🙂. As bad as all these various playoff incarnations (which gave us many #1 vs #2) - COULD be, at times - there were some satisfying outcomes, too... had there not been a Bowl Alliance, people would still be arguing about who was best in 1995. 🙂 Cheers... --Jeff

I wonder what your thoughts are on the playoff expansion. At first I was against expansion but I like that it’ll at least remove opt outs from historic bowl games like the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta (Cotton and Peach too ig). I feel like the perfect “expanded” playoff would’ve been eight teams That way you have four quarter final NY6 games Rose Sugar Fiesta Peach Then the two semis NY6 games Cotton Orange Then the national championship (I’d have it at the rose bowl but we know that’ll never happen again :(
@jeffreyrobertbutters35392 ай бұрын
@@TRockNFL Thanks… I would have preferred an 8 team format over 12, too - but don’t think, no matter the format - that the 2nd, or 3rd best SEC team will be arguing with the Cincinnati’s and FSU’s of the world - for spot #8, or #12, or - whatever - because of the SEC’s ‘mighty legacy’... After 45+ years of following the NCAAF - and now with NIL / transfer portal / never-ending conference realignment, and - gambling - finally, last season’s FSU snub - ended my long, but gradually declining love affair with the sport. As was said by Hemingway, in a very different context - the change (in my perception) - was “gradual, then sudden.” I appreciate the SEC’s recent history, but everyone has to start every season the same - 0-0. 13-0 in a P5 cannot be left out, unless all 5 are undefeated. Then, and then only - could we have all the familiar arguments… Sheesh, we make movies about individuals, and teams - that beat the odds, no matter the adversity. FSU, no stranger to national championships, as a program - was snubbed, because they were PERCEIVED to be not as good as 1-loss Bama (or 1-loss UT) - due to their starting QB’s injury in Game 11. But, FSU still won out after that, including winning the ACC title game - making them UNDEFEATED P5 ACC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS. I’ve been around NCAAF long enough… to hear all the arguments about margin of victory, strength of schedule, how teams did vs. common opponents, etc. - but we can NEVER leave out undefeated P5 - FOR defeated P5. In 2023, the ‘mighty’ SEC WAS extremely great at beating up on each other, BUT - they really did not do so well out of conference - including a drubbing of LSU at the hands of the very same, snubbed FSU, and - eventual 1-loss P5 Big XII champion UT - went into Bama, and comfortably won there by 2 scores. There was no controversy about it… no prominent bad call, or major injury - just a solid win. I appreciate that Saban then told his team, ~ “All our goals are still attainable.” I would not have doubted him, until Selection Sunday…. because he had gotten his team to go undefeated the rest of the way (including another miracle at Auburn). But, there were only 4 spots, and they were not worthy of one of them, as it turned out - albeit in a highly unpredictable manner. Even that Friday, I would not have predicted 3 undefeated P5 champs, and two 1-loss P5 champs. The two 1-loss P5 conference champs had the most convincing of all tie-breakers - a head to head result, and - importantly, one without controversy. Had UGA beaten Bama on that Saturday - we KNOW that UT would have been the P5 conference champion left out, with FSU ‘in’. We’d have had 4 undefeated P5 champs, and the committee could go to bed early on Saturday night - and have slept soundly. Instead, Bama beat UGA, and - the committee DID THE UNCONSCIONABLE. As odd as it was, and no disrespect to Bama or Saban… they lost last season 2023, in September, at home - to another P5 champ, who also finished with 1 loss. Bama’s loss mattered, or should have mattered. The ‘experts’ tell us constantly - that the game results matter - but it turned out that they actually didn’t… NOT when it came to $$, and - a committee that was set up to NOT be held accountable. How is it we cannot know HOW committee members came to the result that they did? We aren’t even allowed to ask! Instead we (i.e., the bought and paid for Rece Davis) can only ask the (bought and paid for) head stooge of said committee. What a joke… It was SO obvious what the proper thing for the committee to do was, but - they took the easy way out. Isn’t it odd?... that the obvious decision would have been the most courageous - which was to put Bama at #5 - where they BELONGED last season. But no… $$ / ‘history’ / legacy / subjectivity > ‘win all your games and you’re in’ / courage. Yeah, there’s a huge diff between #4 and #5.,, just ask people in the FSU program. After a train wreck of an Orange Bowl, and at 1-5 start this season - that program has yet to recover from that abominable decision, corruption, and - injustice. As Jimbo Fisher said not long after… ~“You just cannot mess with the game like that.” After all the ‘sudden’ changes of the last few seasons, I thought I was ‘done’ with NCAAF - at the start of the last two seasons, only to be drawn back in - because the product on the field was still so compelling. Not so this season. After the FSU snub, I no longer give a fuck about NCAAF - it’s now corrupt beyond repair. Now, should I wish to watch professional football - I do so on Sundays. At least I (and the IRS) - know the pay structure - it’s disclosed in the NFL. HOW can we even be surprised by the UNLV situation? Also, there is no longer even the pretense of the student-athlete. At least when I was a student, in Lincoln, in the early 1980’s - student-athletes were expected to attend classes, as full time students - and get passing grades. Back then, there were certainly ‘no-no’s’, even major ones - going on at every major program, including NU - but one could still occasionally expect to see a player walking to class, or - even have a player in one of your classes - as some of my friends did. One NU player, a D lineman who started for NU on the 1984 team - could often be seen STUDYING - at Nebraska Hall, in the evenings - along with all the other engineering majors (a tough major for a player). Now - it’s the Deion Sanders’ kids - showing up to the stadium in their Rolls Royces (or whatever)... Good Luck seeing them ANYWHERE else on the CU campus. As for the 12 team format starting this season, as satisfactory as that will be for some - there will be obvious downsides - and some not so obvious (yet). In 2014, when it went to the 4-team CFP - who knew, at first - that it would make all the other bowls essentially meaningless?. And, who would have predicted the Christian McCaffrey effect? I DO get the $ factor, but I also like what Saban said when, in 2022, and Bama left out of the CFP, and then went on to win the Sugar Bowl… that he was glad his stars (including Bryce Young, in his last game - before being the #1 overall NFL draft pick) - “had finished the season with their teammates”. That seems like a pretty great commitment, and pact - for all teammates, no? Last season, we had players jumping into the portal IMMEDIATELY after the regular season, including many from FSU - and not even waiting until their team’s last (bowl) game, or the completion of the CFP. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah - recruiting, but maybe something ought to change there… All of this resulted in a pathetic Orange Bowl. If one’s teammates are jumping into the portal before the season is over - how can the other players not be terribly affected by that - in regard to preparing for and playing hard in a meaningless bowl game? Sounds like the potential for injury city to me, and - I hope all the other bowls just go away. Many will probably remain, but no one really gives a fuck - except tv execs, the gambling sites, and the fans on vacation in Florida or California. These have become a complete charade and farce, by now… I expect, for the same reasons as now - that we’ll see players opt out - EVEN should their team make it into the 12-team field! A player with a promising NFL career - is not going to want to risk that, depending on circumstances - such as an obvious mis-match in the seeding. Fans are NOT going to like that - as even I, am still not great with what McCaffrey did. You take the deal (scholarship, in his case) - you keep (finish) your commitment… Sheesh. Anyway, Thank you, and - Best to You! Keep up with the historical videos on NCAAF… For me - college football was once both the greatest and most maddening sport ever created by man! Now, I don’t even recognize it. Thanks and Cheers, -Jeff P.S. I am sure this was a bit more of an answer than you desired, or asked for - so thanks for reading my reply… It was fulfilling for me to get a few things off my chest! Cheers…
