When you asked ... Does that mean you should go buy the cheapest amp ... Answer is of course no. Glad you brought up 'feel'. And that factor can make / break a players interest in playing or not playing!! Again, great vid.

Ola...I appreciate your integrity in addressing the question and giving an honest assessment that speaks to the salient and very obvious results. Consider also that many listeners are viewing on portable devices or on a desktop computer and the audio (which also may be compressed owing to the actual transfer rate that is KZbin configured) is running through less than an HD sound system. You play with way more gain than I ever do and I've noticed that the nuanced differences between amps tends to be attenuated to ablation when there's gobs of gain. Where the differences tend be more noticeable is when one plays with a gain structure more along the lines of Billy Gibbons, Angus Young or Eddie Van Halen. That's been my experience in the studio anyway. Again thank you for a very useful and helpful video. Time is more important than money (at least in my economy) and you put a great deal of your personal time into doing this assessment.

The EVH doesn't get his sound from a V30 speaker. They sound better with the EVH celestions or green/creambacks. While I mainly use the blue channel on my stealth for playing, my red channel is dialed in with the eq all on 6, the gain down to 3,5, the presence (depending on the room) on 4 and the resonance on 4-ish. Setting the resonance too high and you could have your lungs collapse.

The algorithm that KZbin uses to make the sound flow smooth and stay attached to the video insync really compresses the signal and makes everything sound homogenous (meaning the same across all videos) To pick out the subtleties of each amp is not easy. Your computer, the sound software, the speakers/headphone and your mixer settings also contribute to the sound. If you hear these in the room like Ola is, the all sound hugely different. As it is, the last one, the little Mooer Blade pedal had the most difference of all of them! It really stood out.

Jesus, they really dropped the ball on that one.
@kozzygurgelzula37488 жыл бұрын
Every producer has his/hers sound in the mixes. When you hear a Ola mix you know it is Ola mix. The same thing with Fluff, Glenn Fricker and the rest. It's the way of their mixing that makes every demo sound similar, not the same!
@kozzygurgelzula37488 жыл бұрын
+Logan Taylor I don't think so, his mixes are fine and he knows what he is talking about. Even if it sounds like he only yells. I personally like Olas mixes more but that's only my taste and has nothing to do with Glenn's mixing. And the same applies to you my friend. Your personal taste has nothing to do with how good Glenn is at mixing.
@Charlyfromthenuclearcity8 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of Glenn mixes either, but at least he uses real instruments for his mixes. I can't do anything but laugh when I see the "How I mixed" videos from Fluff. The guy shows us how he uses multiband compression on a sample-library kick drum... I mean, drums are really the hardest part in mixing, expecially in heavy metal stuff, and Gleen masters this pretty well ! The only thing I don't liek about his mixes is that he doesn't melt the instruments into each other enough, his guitars will often sound "out of the mix" to me.

I don't know why anyone would work with him. He's a complete douchebag who's not even very good at his job, and his studio is a damn pigsty.

Correction @Logan Taylor: I don't think it's "everyone" that eats up Glenn's advice. I'd say the majority of his audience are kids/teenagers or bedroom recording artists just trying to learn and don't really know any better than to take his word for it. It's also why his dumb memes about bass players and everything have taken off, and why his channel got so popular for just yelling a bunch. Kids eat that stuff up, just look at Pewdiepie. To Glenn's credit though, I think he's got a good approach for _recording_. He captures things very cleanly. It's the mixing and mastering parts I think he's got problems with. Also despite playing up the angry youtube personality most of the time, he does seem like a pretty decent guy behind that.
@kozzygurgelzula37488 жыл бұрын

Nailed it Ola. I always like to hear an amp recorded via cab and mic. While it often sounds filth, straight into the DAW doesn't reflect nearly what you hear when jamming / gigging. I thought that was a great video. Great comparisons. Thanks for putting it together like that. DO I hear a difference between each? Yes. I have a sub woofer on the PC in addition to the stereo pair and differences are very noticeable to me on this. As far as the amp heads go, the EVH was deeper and more full. The Mesa had a more defined upper mid chunk and presence. To my ear, I iliked those two best. If I was to buy one of these, I would choose the Mesa. It's a very personal thing though. I have been playing for decades and in my experience, I'd say that in a room in a house or apartment, I agree that differences are less dramatic, but in a ISO booth at a studio, at rehearsals or at a gig, when the amp is loud and the power section is filling out what the pre amp section is pushing out, that is when the differences are most noticeable. That is when amp design and power tube differences really matter. I agree that if you are recording in a home studio and you are in a mix in a with drums, bass, vocals, keyboards or whatever, the identity of the amp will not be as pronounced. The Direct out doesn't really change as the amp gets louder either. The biggest point as to where the differences matter is .... how well do you play through it?. How does it respond to the pick or vibrato or hammer ons? Does it let you easily roll through a run or does it make you have to work harder, pick harder and hammer harder? For me, I have left Marshalls a few times over the decades for the new things and always went back to Marshalls. I will never leave the Marshall family again, even though other amps are impressive. Why? Because the power sections deliver a response that only gets better for me as it gets louder. I have played through other fairly recent amps that only seem to get louder. Nothing else develops. With Marshalls, something great definitely develops. The tone, chunk and response get better for me as an individual with my style of playing. There IS a difference between amps and it comes down to this: You need an amp that lets you deliver the performance that you want to ... without a fight, ... without leaving you flat with early breakup (unless early break up is what you need). It's completely personal. I am not a modern metal player who uses as much gain as we hear here. I was influenced mostly by people like Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker & Jeff Beck and I like and use sounds in the neighborhood of King's X, Andy Timmons, Michael Schenker, George Lynch, .... old school power stage amp depth with higher gain preamp sounds, but not as much gain as Ola is obviously comfortable with.. It definitely works for him. I used a Marshall JMP1 and 9200 for years after going through numerous other amps. In the last few years, I wanted more gain (I don't use distortion pedals) and I moved to the Marshall JVM410HJS (on my 1960B cab) which Ola did a video with and the greatness of the amp is noticeable there. When he strummed the chords, you get a sense of that Marshall presence and character that magically strengthens as it gets louder. I came very close to getting the Mesa Mark V instead of the JVM. Both amps really impressed me. Past experiences and a few options that I preferred kept me on the Marshall track. I do respect Mesa a lot though. I thought that the Mark V sounded best with their traditional cab. I definitely preferred that over their rectifier cab. Maybe with the 7 string guitars and drop tunings and massive gain, there is less of a difference between the newer Metal specific amps. I don't know, but living between the old and new neighborhoods, I hear and feel a difference between the amps that I have experienced and between listening to others. To me Marshall and Mesa amps are the most identifiable sounds. You just need to determine if they or others match your personal likes and needs. Sorry. Didn't intend to write a book, but now you know what I think about this topic!

Hey Ola. Im one of the guys that think/thought all your videos sound the same. not sure if i should apologize Or not. But with this video, you helped to clean up things regarding those "all amps sound the same" sayings. by checking this newer video, I could notice the difference between all the amps, ONLY, when you soloed each one. I liked the Randall Satan Better. But when you mixed it with the bass, drums, etc, it got a bit harder to identify the differences. And it kinda poped up in my mind that the reason why some(lots of ) people says that the videos sounds the same, May be due to the way you mix bass, drums etc. What do you think? Cheers and thanks for the video.

+WithFullDistortion the video is NOT an answer to people, it's just an experiment because if more than one guy claims that I sound the same, then that claim is legitimate. So I don't expect anyone to say they're sorry because they're basically right! :D Regards /Ola

The Mesa stands out... it's not as tight as the other amps and has sludgier bottom.
@Whyrendog8 жыл бұрын
That's what I like about Mesa Boogie amps, but wasn't my favorite in this video. But for other types of music, I like the low end flubby/sludgy and the high end medium tight. Sometimes it takes two amps to get the sound I want so there's tightness on one and some flub on the other. Well, when I had a bunch of amps/preamps back in the day, anyway.

its all about the sound.if you have a crappy flubby distortion it will cover mistakes if you are sloppy.however if you have a modern super tight sound its shows mistakes just as bad as playing clean.ive always been a very clean player but since i purchased a precision drive i play the cleanest i ever have.it just makes everything so precise,mistakes stick out like a sore thumb even when using extreme gain settings.

I loved the Randall "Satan" was surprised the Boogie sounded so midrange boost but sat in the mix really nice with bass and drums. Let down by the 5150 a little ( I own two ) but overall these amps that were displayed have that same chunky tone you want for metal. Maybe the reason people say Ola sounds the same on any amp is because we all sound the same on any amp unless it's a Fender Hot Rod lol Peace Great Video.

yeah, I think it's mostly in the hands. The way you pick and fret. You can make a great amp sound like shit if you pick hard as shit all the time...etc

definitely a discernible difference when they're played back to back like that but not so much identifiable from individual playing videos. that being said i 100% understand why the Randal satan is the most used on your channel now, it's a beast.

When I listened to them without drums and Bass the Randall Satan sounds great... Once the bass and drums are added, the 5150 stealth had a bigger boomier sound... HOWEVER, they all sounded great ... this is a perfect example of "personal preference" ... BUT... once vocals are included in the mix... it starts all over again.... Great job Ola.. cheers.

Couldn't agree more with you at the end of this video about the possibilities of tone being basically endless. I used to work at Hawaii Music Supply and got to try out Soldano, Orange, Marshall, Mesa, Randall, VHT to name a few off the top of my head. Tried a bunch of different guitars out on them too, G&L, Warrior, ESP, Washburn, PRS, Fender, Gibson, and all had their own differences of course. Pickups like u mentioned. I personally have a JMP1 with a Marshall duo monobloc power amp paired with a G&L Legacy that came with Duncan (JB, '59). That combo is my favorite I've tried yet as far as how the amp responds to the way I play. Nothing else has felt as comfortable yet. Nothing truly sounded the same. Maybe some similarities here and there but never truly the same. Btw, that Randall Satan amp sounds epic. Looking forward to trying one.

GREAT video!! Very informative and the test method was impartial as possible. The only aspect I would like to see is the same setup with a clean, undistorted riff. The use of the room mic as comparison was totally cool as it really flattens the variation between amps; which is what your non-guitarist friends hear when they come by to check out your new song or gear, lol.

So what I'm getting here is that playing style, accuracy, good strings and being in tune are the main ingredients for what comes out of the guitar jack. What goes into the computer is mostly affected by mic, placement, cab and room. Everything between those two points is totally up to the individual, the budget, personal taste, etc. Playing well, being in tune, a decent mic and speaker in a decent room, not negotiable, unless using some POD or something (budget considerations). Thanks Ola. You make a ton of sense and I love your videos. Keep up the great music!

You know how some people sware by tube amps? I've used solid state amps for years, basically since I started playing 15 years ago. I didn't have the best life growing up, basically poor, really poor. Last few years my life got better but anyways, I always wanted a Mesa Boogie. Finally found a used one on OfferUp, took it home, hooked it up and dialed it in. Yes there is a difference in person. I can hear it the most when I slide down to open chords. It's like you can hear the difference when you get to the 4th fret and between 4-0 frets. The sound is much more raw and natural. It literally gave me goosebumps cause I never experienced it before. It's like the amp pops those notes sonically better. I love solid state amps too don't get me wrong but I can definitely understand why people love tubes.
@thealphatheist37818 жыл бұрын
I think that for a musician with an ear that has been trained to pick out the differences between tones, the sound is distinct enough to still be able to pick them out in a mix. Not all the differences in this video were like night and day, but you can point them out ok if you know what to listen for. With that said, the more instruments added to a mix, the texture of the guitar tone gets less and less distinct, so overall I'd suggest people not sweat the tone too much. You like the tone you like, that's what matters most, though you should always keep your mind open to new techniques, you might find a tone you like even more. There are many more factors involving tone than the just the amp. Great video!

Great VID. I would love to see comparition video virtually similar cabs with the same speaker models. I testd many V30 speakers in the same cab and a few 2x12 Mesa cabs with original speakers and there is a difference from one to another IMO.
