@@thecozykinoshow also 100% agree with you about The Deserter. My sister and I got into an argument because I think I ranked it top 12 out of all 61 episodes. It rules

I would argue that Iroh's inconsistency in the first season is due to him not yet knowing his purpose. Before the season starts, Iro is basically retired. He's just there to baby-sit Zuko and probably believed they'd never actually find the avatar. Since they'd been searching for 1-2 years already, I think he was hoping that Zuko would give up and change his life. Upon finding the avatar and seeing that Aang is a child, Iroh is interested in capturing him so that the white lotus can protect and train him. But he doesn't trust anyone yet, including Zuko, so he keeps up the illusion that they will capture Aang to "turn him in" to Ozai. As season 1 progresses he sees change in Zuko, puts more trust in him and begins to let his guard down. It's at this point his purpose becomes to prevent the fire nation from getting to the avatar at all cost, and the best way to do that is continuing to follow Aang.

This is the kind of long-but-actually-meaty video youtube desperately needs but will do incredibly dirty with its algo. Its easily my fav video on this channel so far. Will be watching for the next ones. I remember I rewatched this first season so much, and when the other ones came out they formed a nice contrast while keeping enough in step. While I totally agree that the episode arrangement and general writing was still stumbling a bit, I think a lot of the levity helps set up a tone shift that was really exciting to me as a kid. One ep that stands out to me this season (in a bad but interesting way) is the jet one. Jets whole existence sure is something. It is of course a classic case of "more radical/traumatized character has to randomly murder innocents" which reads as centrist propagandizing at worst, and a terminal aversion to challenging the audience with a subjective situation at best. But there's also the fact that he's such a young kid, but treated horribly by the narrative. I suppose they set him up as murderous so it's his 'just desserts' but it leaves a super bad taste in the mouth especially in combination with the conveniently murderous victim trope. And especially especially when you consider someone like Zuko exists in the same show. I know he's supposed to be a Zuko foil, but they really needed to structure it in a less heinous way. The colonial prince being the foil that goes down the righteous path in contrast to the colonial subject is a bit fucked, and also cheapens zukos very interesting story. It's still kind of impressive that such slipups represent the minority of this unique piece of tv. Especially considering a lot of the highest profile staff went on to produce the fart that was korra and the shit that was voltron (excuse my language but that truly seems like the most apt metaphor). I know the question of "what made this lightning in the bottle work" is THE million dollar question but. Seriously, what made this lightning in the bottle work?

1:11:40 in “The Puppetmaster” Sokka also passionately defends Yue when Toph says the Moon spirit turned mean and in “Ember Island Players” Sokka cries when “Yue” dies. Overall I think this criticism is not entirely fair, the show made her death very impactful especially if you compare it to how the only other dead “good guy” in the entire series (Jet) is treated. Jet is basically forgotten about immediately after he dies and is never brought up in a positive way even by his squad members who show up in Book 3. His first post-death name drop is in “The Southern Raiders” with Aang using him as an example of what Katara shouldn’t do. Katara also has no reaction watching him “die” in the play. His death is basically treated with the same level of dignity as Kenny’s from South Park which makes Yue’s much better in comparison

I knew Avatar existed, but had never given it a chance. Then I watched the Netflix show. I saw the flaws, but it sparkled my curiosity. And then I watched the original....and it blew me away. Omg it's so good. And yes, it's one of my favorites show ever made. I'll rewatch it❤

Something I just thought of while watching this video. In timeline order: Air nomad genocide. Assumption that Aang is dead Southern raider water tribe raids. Round up all the watebenders, Siege of ba sing se. Assuming since Aanf hasnt shown up yet the fire nation sweeps out all probability of the avatar cycle to be prolonged as along as possible. Thoughts?
