love the list so here are my ideas on how to change some of the subclasses for the better. (note my opinions) Superstition barb make it is anamthama linked to the resistance that you get at lv 9. so say if you chose occult and arcane as you resistance then if you wizard tries to cast haste on you then this would break your anamthama but if a cleric cast haste on you then i would not break it case that not the tradition of magic you hate. i would also change mage hunter to a basic AO but if its a spellcaster that you despise then you deal i would say you increase the success of the hit by one crit miss --> miss and so on Storm giant for utility as you mentioned give it a feat at inflicts a condition linked to the giant of chose as you said. fury..... i got nothing but CHANGE ITS RISITANCE TO ALL PHYSICAL DAMAGE and give it feats that are more utility based such as conditions, movement options and make it the utility of the barbarians through a number of feats. the other subs are fine and hahahahahahha marketing ...

It's worth noting that Sudden Charge is nice...but Raging Intimidation gets you two free skill feats, one of which is the Legendary Scare to Death feat (instant kill foes with Intimidate), and is the only way to intimidate or Scare to Death while raging. That's a great reason to get two level 1 Barbarian Feats. As for Giant Instinct, I love that the size increases are the same regardless of your own size. So a small Goblin or a Tiny Sprite can hit Huge size by the end (and small Goblins can still use a Large Bastard Sword and swing it one handed like Cloud). Terrify your enemies like never before! Also, if you combine Giant Instinct Barbarian with the Vigilante Archetype, you can play as Ultraman, and I just love that.

Not only that but orcs would make the best barbarians. The scarred orc and battle ready orc are perfect for survivability and intimidation. I'm not a player yet myself, but orcs seem to be the best choice for barbarians.

@@megavore97 I think I've seen NoNat's video breaking down the ancestries, yet he has yet to make one dedicated to orcs. Humans have the ability to pick up extra feats and they have half-orcs as a versatile heritage. Orcs were covered when NoNat did a deeper delve on the Lost Omens ancestries. Orcs tend to gravitate towards marshal classes and would do well in the Magus class once that gets released. Yet their feats do make it easier for a barbarian to not only survive but to deal more damage due to the orc ferocity feat tree and other feats that make use of intimidation and increase survivability. Diehard with Orc Ferocity seem like a good combination for an orc barbarian.

Fury is the best instinct to choose when dedicating into barbarian just for a few utility feats, so you don't get an anathema
@Master_E444
@Master_E444 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think it's a simple solution to the issue with the Anathema: Do what Superstitious Resilience does and pick only two Traditions to not allow. I mentioned this in the comments of a prior Barbarian Video but it'd basically fit into superstition while also permitting your party to use magic on you without it causing a conflict. Example: your superstitions are based around a dislike of Arcane and Divine Magic due to you seeing them as trying to taint the natural world and the spirits there and the others in the Party are say, an Occult Sorcerer and a Druid. You'd see their magic as more pure/natural and less like the other two that bend things to how they see it. Depending on which two you pick, it could be a good way to build this up and develop why you hold these kind of beliefs.

One thing I'd like to point out that people seem to overlook about the Superstition Barbarian is that it actually pairs really well with Alchemists. Alchemical items are specifically not magic. With free archetype you can take Alchemist and handle at least some of the healing yourself, and/or get other quasi-magical benefits. It's a build I'd like to take for a whirl some day at the very least.

These are all great, however if rate the fury instinct higher because I don't think the flavor of the character strictly needs to come from the "subclass" so to speak. I don't mind you plugging in your homebrew during your videos, but I think you've done it the best here. In the alchemist and the wizard one, the impression one could get was that of "the other subclasses kinda suck, here is mine" (I know this wasn't the case). I absolutely preferred the promotion in this video, filling a niche that other instinct didn't cover. Keep up the good work!

@@Nonat1s Yeah, I think it's important when plugging to not tout yourself as better than official RAW options. I've found a really good way to avoid that--especially when the point of the homebrew is to fix something you don't like about official RAW--is to use "I" statements. You know, "I don't like how Paizo handled this one" instead of "Paizo did a bad job of handling this one." Using "I" statements also helps criticism go down easier and thus is more likely to promote healthy discussion rather than spark a flame war, in my experience. Based on the content I've seen you put out since That One Wizard Video, it looks like you've made an effort to do that already. You put a lot of emphasis on how your analysis is subjective, and it's encouraged me to look more closely at the source material myself so I can figure out my own opinions and join the conversation. Also, this "I" statement thing is totally a psychologically validated method of improving communication skills, and it's neat that you've basically discovered the trick on your own. 10/10 discussion, 10/10 shilling.

One thing that I'd like to say in favor of Superstition Instinct is that, although it may be niche, I think it has it's place in certain campaigns. I haven't played in one yet, but I think it'd be really cool to have a party that's anti-magic. There's a surprising amount flavor AND mechanic support for it with superstition instinct for Barbarians, Godless Healing, Elfbane Hobgoblin, and I feel like there's a lot more, but that's what immediately came to mind. That being said, I'll be the first to admit that it'd be nice if some of those niche things with strict party requirements were to come a little later-on in PF2's life cycle, after there are a couple more mainstream options. Then again, there are 5 other Instincts, which is more than most classes have for their respective subclass, so maybe it already was the time for barbarians to get something a little unique like that.
@Nonat1s
@Nonat1s 3 жыл бұрын
Possible. I think it would've fit better in "Secrets of Magic" tbh. It would be ironically flavorful for the "Anti magic" subclass to release inside the "Magic" focused supplement.

About superstition instinct: i almost forget this one each time, it's pretty fun to imagine but the constraints are way too hard to overcome. I can only imagine someone playing it in a low-magic stamina campaign, else it's just... nah. About manipulative/casting, some spells don't have the manipulate trait (albeit rare), and a "blood" sorcerer (with the right feat) can take some damage to overcome one casting component. It could be a way to make them not feel 100% safe to cast in melee, as a GM tool against some players.

Ive played barbs in DnD and 1e, I can say with out a doubt they are so much more fun to play in 2e. He is a spirit barbarian, who is guided by the souls of the bodies that were used to make him a fleshwarp, The majority of him is made of a fallen Aasimir Combat medic who is the main guiding spirit. As a character he is simple and strong, yet has the odd ability of being a fantastic medic. There are times where his personality changes almost like hes possessed (by the aasimir spirit) at second level the aasimir will start coming out more.

The superstition instinct is certainly problematic but to be fair in PF2, with classes like the alchemist and inventor as well as archetypes like the healer and herbalist I think a non-magical party is considerably more viable than other editions. I like the spirit instinct the most since you get to throw ghosts at people though I think a strength real of Fury is that the lack of interesting class feat options make archetypes much more inviting; also the lack of anathema means they'll never temporarily lose their powers. Along similar lines, I love the idea of being a shrunken giant, down to like Dwarf size. Maybe you’re a one-off, maybe there could be an ancestry where you’re part of a community of reduced giants where you’re all under some sort of curse. Maybe there’s a restriction where your size can’t be increased by magic at all until the curse is lifted. Mechanically, Dwarf statistics probably would be the best bet, with a few tweaks (you should get or have access to better rock throwing, for example).

I think my problem with Animal Barbarian is that it doesn’t really give the fantasy of going all animal-y at low levels (which are the most important levels). The unarmed attacks at low level are fine, but you kinda just want to use a weapon instead. So either I’d love it if those were all tuned up or given more utility, or they made it such that when your hands are empty your movement speed is raised. Alternatively or as a supplement, increased perception / initiative could round out the fantasy as well. I dunno. To me, the idea that they’re better tanks is undeniably powerful, I just don’t think it really represents the fantasy of beasts

As a fan of dragons and psychopomps, thank you for putting my two favs as your two highest ranked ones. If I can dual class, I will be either a Draconic Sorc/Spirit Barb or (preferably) Psychopomp Sorc/Dragon Barb. Alas, I don't like dual classing unless I'm playing in a small party.

I played a Human Barbarian with Giant instinct in Extinction Curse (up to level 20). It's kinda boring because you just strike most of the time (until Nonat1s said to feint, intimidate or recall knowledge). But I have to say, this class is essential in a party. I took Toughness and Mountain Stoutness (via Adopted Ancestry). I had 376 HP at max level. For class feat, I'll say Sudden charge is very useful to close in to enemies. Reckless Abandon is super nice because you will be doing a lot of crits. Finally, a must have class feat- Attack of Opportunity. With my Large size from Giant stature, I get to hit more enemies. For weapon, it can be anything but use a Speed Rune for an extra attack. Telluric Power also helped me dish out a lot of damage.

Giant and superstition instinct are my two favorite for npcs. A little gnome, with polearm, that becomes a giant when it rages? Too damn good lol. And being an npc kinda mitigates the party troubles for the superstition. Your stone instinct sounds pretty awesome. I'm hoping they bring back the bloodrager as a class, or a subclass for barbarian

The thing I greatly dislike about Animal is the fact that you can’t use weapons while raging. No access to thrown weapons for range if you need it, no reach weapons until Deer or Frog at level 7. But you also kinda probably should have a weapon, since you need something if Rage ever drops, or else invest in a race that has a natural weapon. Sure, there’s a lot of utility with the free hands and grapples and I’m sure it can be incredibly effective. But while the unarmed attacks you get are good, you also can’t easily change your mind, and switch from a grapple to a trip or shove weapon, or so forth. It loses on the fun factor for me because of that, although I can recognize that for other players, it has incredible potential and is perfect for them.

I’d like to go on record saying that at the same level Dragon Barbarians get to transform into a real Dragon, Giant Barbarians get to take Whirlwind Strike with a potential 25’ reach, meaning they can attack EVERY ENEMY WITHIN A 65’ DIAMETER CIRCLE AT ONCE. For context, with the increased Rage Damage and using a Trip Weapon like the War Flail, a Giant Barbarian becomes a whirling dervish of death and incapacitation, outputting damage per turn that makes even a Dragon Barbarian’s Breath Weapon look halfassed.

Nonat, what do you think would be the interaction between the animal instinct rage, the bonus damage and natural weapon, and a feat from the beastkin lvl 17 feat "animal shape"; and if he could use things like special actions from feats (because it says "which are the only attacks you can use" so I'm unsure how that would work).

My only disagreement would be the Superstition Instinct is the worst, mostly because it almost always will need homebrew to be playable. I feel like they could've made it where you hate two traditions, and are more ambivalent to the other two - allowing you to work with "some" casters. It would also add flavor because your story is focused on hunting down specific casters, which is huge story hook.

Not a Pathfinder player yet, but I think barbarians could utilize shields to negate the AC penalty. Not to mention they sort of need high scores for strength, constitution, and dexterity scores too. Yet with the giant instinct the battle ready orc seems to be the best choice if given all the orc feats that make them hard to kill, intimidating glare, the diehard feat, and any other feat that increases survivability and can cripple foes to lower their chance to land a blow. For the draconic instinct barbarian the scar skin orc works due to the possibility of a tribe of orcs that worship dragons with dragon tattoos on their bodies. Yet Paizo should add more archetypes for barbarians though. Imagine an archetype for giant instinct barbarians or large ancestries that transform the barbarian and large ancestries into giants. That would be cool to have a level 20 character that has been fully transformed into a giant. Or perhaps an archetype for barbarians and druids that allow them to transform into mythical beasts.

Barbarians can definitely use shields, and won't be hurt as much by it as so much of their damage comes from rage bonuses. As for needing dexterity, they have medium armor proficiency so they only really need 12. Also I'm pretty sure there's a level 10 druid spell that lets you turn into an enormous creature

A bit late... and I'm not sure if it was brought up (and if not then why not) but wouldn't the Giant instinct be really strong with attacks of opportunity due to the extra reach? Point is it's designed in a very gate keeping manner "I'm playing this so for it to work the party has to build around me." Not to mention the fact you lose your powers regardless of whether or not you're "allowing them to cast things on you." It's very problematic and selfish. Which is fine if everyone consents but like it's very much asking or some asshole to be that asshole ya know?

I disagree with the fact that the superstition barbarian fun factor is so low. It is true that impairs the game to the extent that his powers cause him to refuse magical heals, but it also create the opportunity to roleplay the situation, to create drama about that, or to resort to different ways to heal (that the system offers in great numbers). It hurts fun factor only if the reason you are playing pf2e is to win fights and "beat the game" without bugging any other character (and sadly bad roleplayer) . Let's put the Rp back in roleplay not only as a flavor factor but also as a fun factor else flavor means nothing...
