As a golfer who has been playing since I was 5 years old and has played 30 years this summer and still going strong at it. I can tell you will not be a PGA tour professional overnight(I am still not either). My game took years to improve, getting out to the range, finding golf help along the way, learning club terminology, what clubs do what, how to use then, yardage for each club, grips, regular and stiff shafts. I can go on and on about what needs to be learned. However, there is one simple thing that I wish I learned at a young age that all the stuff mention above just wipes it away. Just learn golf and do not worry about all those things right away. Find your swing mechanics and get those down because to me that is the hardest part. This will take up most of your time guys and gals. If your a beginner (especially if a newbie is golfing with me), biggest thing is encouragement from other golfs. I will break down all the positive aspect of your game and the negatives. Then I will talk about how to improve rather than you did that terrible or why did you do that. Break everything down in a positive manner which make beginner golfers keep coming back. The other problem is I have been playing for 30 years, I know my swing, how to use it, and distances which makes me look intimidating. Please understand it took me years to get here, practice, practice, practice. Playing golf almost everyday as a kid (we had a free course we went to and lucky to have it growing up) which I look back on now and was just so much fun. Which finally what Coach Lockey mentioned is just have fun. I like to go golf with friends have a few laughs, drink a beer or two and just enjoy the time we spend together. A peaceful place in nature to enjoy. A friend of mine his wife does not golf but she came out for the first time once. She was like "it is so peaceful out here, quiet and nature is amazing! No wonder why you both golf". She was able to read half her book while we golfed and just enjoyed the scenery. That is part of the reason we golf. So as a beginner just have fun and enjoy everyone's company you will get there someday.

My first set of clubs my Dad bought at a Goodwill thrift store for a song, a complete set of women's Macgregor Tourney blades, and wooden woods (diver, 3W, 5W), 3i-SW). There was a small pasture out back of the house I used as my range. I mowed it with the small tractor we had, then used a push mower to clean up my hitting line and 10yd wide circles to simulate greens at 75, 100, 150 yards. Hitting from the left or right side of the hitting line increased the distance to my "greens" by 20 yards. Hitting driver caused my to go through a barbed wire fence into a "raw" pasture, populated with cattle often and some brush here and there. That is where I learned to hit recovery shots off of all manner of lies. My teacher was my Dad. He had a Fred Couples type swing, effortless and maintained a handicap in single digits. Some of my favorite memories were with Dad, hitting balls at sunset. I was 14 when Dad let me play my first round at a golf course. I shot 91 with three lost balls. Best golf tip Dad ever gave me? Know the distance of every iron with a half swing. That single tip gave me a whole different set of tools, effortlessly. Second best tip? Never try a hero shot, just hit something that finds the short grass. I'm 65 now. It is a great game. Enjoy it with friends and family.

I’m new to golf so what does the distance with half a swing give you?
@MichaelSisley-fw3xr
@MichaelSisley-fw3xr 2 ай бұрын
@@tuppens2007 It depends on you, your swing. Usually, it gives you about 1/2 the distance. The ball flight is going to be lower too. Here is the potentially good point. Because a half swing travels less distance from the ground, the golfer potentially can be quite accurate (less to go wrong in a shorter swing). With longer irons, the run out may be longer. Sometimes that can be a good thing. Dispersion of your shots will tighten up with a half swing too. I like a 3 to 6 iron for my get out the super bad rough, trees, etc., for getting the ball back into play. That half swing just pops it up enough to escape and then sets down on the fairway grass and runs a bit. Do a bit of practice with this idea. It can help you, and record in a notebook your distances. Same for full shots on all irons and hybrids or fairway woods. When you KNOW your distances, the scores come down. Also, get a range finder. Don't guess distances to pins. I attack greens on the low side and safe side (more space). I never want to put the ball on the top 1/4 of the green. Downhill putts are not your friend. Good luck.

Understand you don’t have to try and hit your next shot as far as possible. If you have 300 yards to the hole and obviously cannot reach, split it up into two 150 yard shots with less chance of shanking one into the forest.

Yes, I went golfing for my first time a couple days ago after spending all summer at the range. I quickly realized 3 things: 1. Hitting on grass and different ground angles is tough 2. You do not need to drive it right to the green. I was way more efficient in just popping it into the center of the fairway and going from there. 3. golf is FUN

My first set of irons was 23 years old, and I started last year. I just got a new set of Ping irons and WOW!!! what a difference they make. You might not need the latest and greatest but at least have some that have kept up with the technology today. I doubt they design new golf balls for clubs that are 20 to 30 years old.

1. Spend a half hour at the range for every hour on the course. 2. Do not over swing. 3. Do not come up short on putts. 4. Concentrate on developing three ultra reliable clubs and learn how to control distance for each of them. You should not rely on them over the long run, but those reliable clubs will make the game more enjoyable. until you can depend on all 14 clubs. 5. Follow the rules, in particular the rule that affect other groups ahead or behind you. Playing through, divot repair, limited noise, etc. are important issues.

And while we're at it: When the path to the next tee goes sideways at about 100 yards short of the green of the hole you are currently on, DON'T leave your bag or trolley or cart at that distance in the freaking middle of the fairway, especially on par 5s. Please leave it to the side you have to continue later anyway.

Driver is not the most important club in your bag. You should not use more then 10 to 12 times your driver in a full game. Beginner will do between 100 and 120 shot in a game so its about 10% of your shot. Plus, you can play a whole game without playing your driver at all and probably get better result. You can play a par 5 with a 6 iron and get on the green in regulation. Not a good advice at all for beginner.
