"I read 50 books this year, and I didn't like any of them." I'm feeling attacked right now. 😂 But you're right about it being a me problem. I tried to expand my repertoire and get into new genres this year, and... it was a bust. Guess it's nothin' but sci-fi, thrillers, and depressing non-fiction/memoirs for me! Hope your holidays have been enjoyable, Shawn. Congrats on 66 books read this year! 🎉

I've read 10 books this year and I kinda beat myself up for that, but then I think of 50 percent of the general public and how they probably haven't read a single sentence and my demeanor suddenly shifts, especially when 7 out of those ten books have literally become my favourite books!

The thing about reading 50 books and not liking any of them resonated so much with me because it's so true. Like, why the fuck i'm struggling reading books I know I'm not going to like just for the sake of reading, knowing exactly what type of book I deeply enjoy. Your channel truly feels like those mean teachers that are actually really kind but just speak facts to your face to make you a better person, in thus case reader.

Re: The Road. I definitely understand feeling super depressed after reading it. I was definitely sobbing at the end. But I actually see the book as an extremely hopeful and beautiful piece of work-- about the human desire and need for peace and family, of closeness and vitality, and about our fleeting attachment to the natural world around us. If we are talking about the intentions of the author, I think this is quite clear in that he never explores what really happened to the world or why, or what exactly the social order of this new society is. It's just a boy and his father trying to survive and love each other. This is the dad's soul purpose: to keep the humanity alive in his son. I find it moving and affecting. The last paragraph of the novel is one of the best things, even standing on its own, I have ever read. "In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."
