I feel you. Here I am, with a reading disability, a mentally intensive full-time job, and a graduate English class, struggling to close-read two 600+ page novels in three weeks to write an analysis on them from a writer's perspective, as a newbie writer. XD However, I'd also consider that some of these books, like the manga, can be read very easily and quickly; length and depth levels vary. And as you listen to audiobooks, you can still move around and work on tasks that don't require much thinking (like sweeping the floor, crocheting...); you can also increase the playback speed. In addition, we tend to blaze through books we're *really* into, and it looks like this was an unusually good month for her. While I believe reading that many books is still enabled by certain privileges, these details do make a difference.

I read about 10 books a month on average, so still, very much an amateur compared to you. Always enjoyed the classics but recently I gave them a rest, but your enthusiasm has rekindled my appetite for the Russian classics in particular. I first read War and Peace over 40 years ago, and I cannot tell a lie I found it hard going. I read it again when I'd turned 40 and enjoyed it far more. Now nearly 70 I have been inspired by you to read it again, thank you for your encouragement to us all to read more and learn about the world and ourselves. Stay safe.

I HAAAATED War and Peace. Forced myself through it. Spent more than a year on it. Never in my life have I been spoonfed a message to such an excruciating extent. I GET IT! When we describe war history in retrospect, things that weren't really planned out at the time, can always be interpreted as strategic when we look back. I'd rather stab a fork in my eye than be hit over the head with this point one more time. And don't get me started on the relationships and human emotions. It's obvious that "show, don't tell" was not a concept that existed in the 1890s. Never again a Tolstoy-book. One star.

Great video! Inspiring! I had never read any Tolstoy, except for "The Kreutzer Sonata" (a novella). It was brilliantly written, but CRAZY. Tolstoy's obsessions obviously got the better of him. However, about a month ago, I read "Resurrection"--his last long novel (of the 3 long ones). It is usually described as inferior, but I loved it. It is so VISUAL, so EMOTIONAL, so PASSIONATE, so INFURIATING, and so THOUGHT-PROVOKING. It almost made me want to try Anna Karenina. (But not W and P.) Also went back and re-read Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot," my favorite of his big novels. Good on you for tackling W and P!

As a russian I have to say that Turgenev is definitely one of the best russian classic authors but sadly very underappreciated outside of Russia. Everyone only knows Tolstoy and Dostoevsky even though Turgenev’s works are far more accessible and captivating because while the writing is still beautiful and profound he doesn’t go on long-winded repetitive moralizing tangents that those two tend to do in their books. I would highly recommend Fathers and sons and also Home of the gentry if you liked First love. Also I just recently stumbled upon your channel and very much enjoy experiencing the books through your eyes❤️

in watermelon sugar is possibly my favorite book of all time! i discovered it my freshman year of uni and it was honestly the sole reason i took so many creative writing courses. i think its so innovative and whimsical and melancholy, just love it so so much. so lovely to hear you speak about it in such an appreciative way :) richard brautigan is a fascinating person too; he grew up in the pacific northwest and was somewhat apathetic to the counterculture/beats movement while also being a figure within it. he committed suicide at age 49 and the story surrounding that is so morbid (he wasn't found for nearly a month); i mention all this bc i think knowing his background and fate lends a really impactful context to his work. he also recorded an album of reading his poems and some chapters from watermelon sugar and his voice is hypnotic in a way, would recommend checking it out :) if you're interested in reading more from him, you should check out the hawkline monster! much love

First Love hit me so hard when I read it. I have a pipe dream of adapting it into a short film.. it would be so much fun to see played out, the scenes are so beautiful and when I read it I just visualize it so clearly. I've never really talked about it with anyone so it was really nice to hear how much you enjoyed it too. :)

Read the Edmonds translation of War and Peace many years ago but thanks to you I want to re-read it with the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. You read a truly impressive variety and number of books!

I listened to First Love after watching your video and it was spectacular! Was not expecting the dark elements in it but that made it all the better such a great read. Thanks!

I don't know if you have already read things by him, but I think you'd like Leopardi's writings! He was an italian poet of the 19th century, his works are very delicate but also dealing with human emotions and how sublime they can become!

1. You? Precious angel. Love your channel. 2. I don’t know if you’re into musicals but I would highly recommend watching/listening to Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812!! It’s based off W&P and is so fun!! The soundtrack can be found probably here and on Spotify, and then someone (illegally but I’m no snitch) recorded the musical when it was on Broadway a few years ago. It’s well worth it I believe if you loved the book!! :)

The prophet is a book I wish I could hand out copies to anyone and everyone. My most favourite book in the world. It’s beautifully written, extremely metaphorical, but you get it. It’s breathtaking ✨

If you really love War and Peace, there's actually a musical written about a section of it! It's called Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 and I highly recommend!!

Happy you’ve read Machado :) I’m from Brazil and I’m so proud to say that Machado de Assis is not only one of our best writers but also one of the world’s most fascinating author. I recommend two of his fiction books: “Dom Casmurro”and “ The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas”.
