In 1998 MGS1 had good gameplay. Now of course when you compare it to MGS 4 or V in terms of gameplay, it can't compare. And yea, that might not be a fair comparison, but we ARE comparing things here so we're already passed that point (before anyone tries to bring that up, lol.) Nostalgia still makes me prefer MGS1 though, I will admit. Game blew my balls off when I played it at 10 years old. Changed my views and expectations of video games forever.

Royal Knight I bought the game when it came out and it was a revelation. Bear in mind that the presentation at the time on PS1 was so far ahead of everything else on the console - the richness of the colours, lighting and environmental detail were seriously impressive at the time for 14 year old me. Only Soul Reaver could stand up to MGS in terms of the maturity and depth of its story in an action game. Then the cherry on top is the esoteric, 4th wall breaking tone that has never been matched by any other game franchise. It's one of PS1's finest games, unquestionably.

solid snake 323 I enjoyed the gameplay and kind've accepted V for what it is. Truth of the matter is that MGS' story stopped being good after the 3rd game - the continuity is completely torpedoed in 4 in service to some awesome set-pieces and in your face fan-service that all works well on the first playthrough, Peace Walker was a fun, bite-sized portable game with a goofy story that ultimately goes nowhere until its final moments and V was a fun as hell open world that unfortunately got more depressing the more you played it and realized how empty the world and dragged out the mission structure was; compared to Ground Zeroes, the side missions were laughably simplistic. None of these games are perfect, but I believe MGS4, Peace Walker and V were just vessels for Kojima to explore themes he was interested in rather than trying to make a fulfilling series story arc, but the gameplay got better and better with each instalment.

You know, I could get the anger if the series wasn't definitively over (no Survive, you do not count). It's not like it matters if people like it or hate it because we're not getting more either way so it's not like the fan reaction will have any effect on the future of the franchise since there isn't one. People should just accept it's divisive and move on.

Peace Walker is one of my favorites, mainly because of all the interesting directions in which it pushed the envelope. I'd like to point out the often misunderstood significance of the theme for the Paz fight! The song itself is actually the song Paz sings for the Peace Day celebration. It probably would have gotten an English adaptation if Peace Walker had originally been a major release. Still, the lyrics are easy to grasp, and the overall meaning of it all adds a lot to the fight. The song is Paz singing about her conflicting feelings, so it provides a look into what's going on in her head versus what she's openly doing and saying.

MGS2 will always be my favourite. It has the best themes in the series and uses the video game medium to it's fullest when presenting those themes. Much like Nier: Automata has done recently. Plus the gameplay was fantastic. Controls may seem archaic to those that have become dependent on the L2 + R2 system that permeates every game these days but once you mastered the controls in 2 you could pull of some pretty great feats. Not too mention, Substance was loaded with content. Also, I liked Raiden for what it's worth. He served a good purpose and it was amazing to see Snake from a different perspective. Teaming up with him at the end is a very memorable moment in the series that I rarely hear referenced by fans these days. As for lists: MGS2, MGS1, MGS3, MGSV, MGS4, Peace Walker, Portable Ops.

I think that since Kojima is finally done with the MGS series, and left Konami, he can be free and create whatever he wants. It had everything; Snake's first love interest, Gray Fox, Big Boss vs Solid Snake, Campbell and Snake's first mission, the first iconic meet up in the women's bathroom, fun boss fights, great music, conversations with Master Miller, a battle with a Metal Gear, suspense, mystery, betrayal, an engaging narrative, and the reason young Snake travelled to Alaska to become a musher which he explains to Meryl about at the end of MGS. Annd i really loved Peace Walker too. The co-op was sooo much fun and the mech boss battles were unique and fresh in the series. The main characters were diverse and it was fun learning about cultural and political facts in 1970s central America

@@Gadget-Walkmen It tells it's story with way too much exposition dumps, especially with the overuse of the codec. MGS3 has lots of exposition too, but it often tells it in such a dynamic way via its cutscenes which are full of action. The Ames scene, the Johnson scene and the Emma scene all have characters right next to each other talking via Codec. It's obviously too save money animating the scene and they come up with an unconvincing reason as to why they are talking that way, but if you have to invent a reason to explain away your cost saving solution to the exposition then maybe you have too much exposition? There are other flaws too, the voice acting for one isn't as good as the first game, Dead Cell are inferior to Fox Hound and it's a shame that the bad guys never are a united front - Olga is doing her own thing, Ocelot it's doing his own thing and Solidus and Fatman, two actual members of Dead Cell are carrying out their own schemes too! When 50% of your unit is scheming against it, then it's not great. It also doesn't help that the Big Shell is just generally uninteresting a location. The opening on the tanker invokes such an incredibly mood with the rain soaked decks and the claustrophobic corridors, whereas the Big Shell with it's bright sunlight and repetitive bridges is characterless.

I feel more like konami ruined the game because they wanted to fire kojima as soon as possible so they rushed the game and it wasn't what it could have been.
@GAMNGgeek7 жыл бұрын
C4i3ooze exactly, however, I still like the game a lot, chapter two felt kinda like all the cutscenes and story kojima had done, but Konami didn't know where to put them so just threw them all over the place. and since kojima was gone they didn't know how to do missions and advance the story, they just made you play through older missions (tbh, I didn't mind at all). It is still a great game, but it could have been better, especially chapter 2. That said, MGS is my favourite game series of all time
@Miyakolover7 жыл бұрын
I still think chapter 2 was made like that on purpose to convey a message regarding the cycle of revenge, Kojima actually talked about it and here is a quotation from Kojima himself that makes me believe it was an artistic decision. ""We often see good versus evil encounters in the closing scenes of Hollywood movies, which are meant to satisfy their audience. But this game's theme is the chain of revenge, the phantom pain - the continuous chain that you experience when the target of your vengeance is gone. It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle." This kinda why I love chapter 2...I think it was a misunderstood chapter...I mean really...is there any reason Kojima had to re-use missions in chapter 1 when he easily could have just had the new chapter 2 missions? especially that the repeated missions aren't required to advance the story?
@Miyakolover7 жыл бұрын
"yes there is a reason for the missions, Kojima ran out of budget" -Umm, No? That isn't the reason...you don't have any evidence to back this up...just because some moron said it on the internet, doesn't mean you should go on repeating it without verifying. "thats why he sold the prologue as a seperate game, it did enhance the devolopment of MGSV but he fucked it up the moment he started working on Silent Hills when the Phantom Pain wasn't finished 100%, he should've finished the game first then move to a different project, in the end everything went to shit and SHs was cancelled" -Dude...what is your evidence for such nonsense? GZ was sold separately as marketing for TTP and to get feedback on how to improve the gameplay. Secondly, All he did was create a small demo for Silent Hills, he didn't start working on the project while doing TTP; stop acting like you were there with him and knew what he was doing. "The repetitive missions has nothing to do with Skullface's downfall or the feeling of phantom pain" -Or appearantly you didn't understand ANYTHING from the quotation I sent you, so let me repeat the more crucial part that you didn't seem to understand. "But this game's theme is the chain of revenge, the phantom pain - the continuous chain that you experience when the target of your vengeance is gone. It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle." This here clearly states that Chapter 2 represents the outcome of revenge AFTER the target of your vengence is GONE...and that was Skull Face...is this concept really that hard to grasp or you didn't read it carefully? "Kojima himself said that he was late to deliver the game, it was supposed to be released 6 months earlier" -Umm, okay...so every dev delays their games, this doesn't prove anything. "If it was an artistic decision like you said and it has nothing to do with the problems I mentioned.....well intentional shit is still shit!" -No...it's not shit.... you just don't want to think about the story you experienced, hence why you are resisting clear evidence that chapter 2 wasn't rushed. If you simply get over how the past MGS games told their stories and try to understand why MGSV is the way it is...then maybe you'll see it's not "shit"...but I am not gonna try to convince you, all I can do is advise you and you can either take it or leave it...and from the looks of things your mind is already made up and you're not willing to see it in a different light.

Only 2? Yeah right. There was: The Skulls Amror / Mist Unit Quiet Eli The Man on Fire The Skulls Sniper Unit And of course Sahelanthropus Not to mention the fact that in Peace Walker or MGS1 a Tank or a Chopper were a designated boss, but in TPP they are a normalized factor of general game play. It has the controls, the small managable scale, the adictive base building, the coop, the great story (I loved the AI weapons and costa rica setting, Dr. Strangelove and Huey, Millers enthusiasm for MSF and burgers... Paz as Peace incarnate - only to be an agent of cypher because this is metal gear) - it's the perfect blend of gameplay and narrative.

MGS1 was my first game. I first started playing when my big brothers got stuck in the hanger doorway before the raven tank battle so my first memories of gaming are of walking into a tank & somehow making it out alive so raven's speech to liquid after really hit me and I've been playing ever since. I'm confident that i'm a better person today because of Mr Kojima & his teams over the years.

Peace Walker is far better than #7. Despite its PSP limitations, it has the most content of any game in the series (I don't count MGSV's vapid open world). The Co-Op, when I used Ad-Hoc Party on PS3, was FANTASTIC. And I don't know watcha talking about, the AI Bosses were great! Especially the Chrysalis and PW. PW is by far my favorite boss in the series. So much is at stake, the boss (quite literally) has an insane amount of variety and the nuke launch scenes were extremely frantic. Sahelanthropus is awesome, but is far slower, and far less difficult.
@phoevosk43457 жыл бұрын
ikr, pw is actually my 2nd favourite mgs game.
@MikeNepo7 жыл бұрын
Edwin Chauca you did play mgs right? I think you might be wearing nostalgia goggles. The AI was just as terrible. Also, those motherfucking snipers with the boonie hats! Not getting spotted by them in their camo was definitely not easy the first time around. And the drones! Also PW (boss) is hard as shit! Plus the custom vehicles! Maybe it's not ridiculously difficult for purely main missions but 100% was no easy feat.
@neilzaza15017 жыл бұрын
+Mike Nepo I agree too, PW is often seen as one of the worst canon entries, but I feel like it's just an evolution of the franchise, and a fairly good one. Most of the people who didn't like MGSV probably didn't play PW and were expecting a game like MGS1 or 2, since TPP is essentially a big modern console version of PW. And yeah, it was difficult, especially solo and especially with those damn PSP controls :p . I still remember trying the Rathalos fight over and over again.
@phoevosk43457 жыл бұрын
I agree. Through my gaming history one of the biggest reliefs was beating rathalos. I still play peace walker to this day, and although I feel like snake eater is better story driven, i remember it was wayyyyy easier than peace walker. I am a bit of a handheld fan boy, but I don't have the slightest regret in buying a vita to play pw at a higher fps. Great game and one of the best in the franchise.

I'm with you, brother. Peace Walker is fantastic and has an amazing amount of content for a PSP game. I loved the story and all the characters. The silliness littered in there (SUNLIGHT! & Monster Island) was so much fun. It's #3 on my list behind iconic MGS1 and 2.

I am a big MGS fan as you can probably tell by my name here. I agree with many things you say in the video and i definitly appreciate that this video exists! Its a sort of trip down memory lane for fans and a way to easily explain to others why MGS is so great, so firstly i would like to congratulate and thank you for this video. I dont agree with the ranking itself though, in more than 1 game, i wont go into detail on that though as im pretty sure nobody cares. But what i would like to do is ask if you can make a Legend of Zelda version? I am pretty sure this one took alot of time to make with editing all these pieces together, thing is, i am not a Legend of Zelda fan, i know nothing of it but i keep hearing how great it is, and to hear someone whos tastes i trust say it as well, just made me think that i really might be missing out on something! So thats my request, im sure i am not the only one wishing for this, but if you could find the time i would greatly appreciate it! Take care, Yong.

I actually like how MGSV was delivered. Kojima made its core message literal. The Core message was "What you seen, heard, or learned isn't always the truth" Like how; -Ocelot was speaking and talking naturally When he's talking to Venom, although he only hypnotized himself thinking Venom was the real BB. -Kaz wasn't edgy because he just want revenge, but because he knows the plan. -Zero wasn't a total dick after all, he was actually quite the bro. -The legend of Big Boss is not what it seems. -Skull face is just a guy who wants revenge and the rumors distorted the truth(word of mouth) which made his image terryfing but he's just a guy who have the POWAAAAAH. -Kazuhira owns a Burger Joint. When I realized this, I just laugh my ass off how ridiculous MGSV was. It threw me off guard to be honest.

10. Metal Gear. - Not aged well. 9. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - 2D classic, but nothing compared to the later games. 8. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Good gameplay, but nothing more than a glorified demo. It made the antagonising wait for MGS V TTP even worse. 7. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops - Terrible controls, but not a bad PSP game. Above average storyline too, better than Peacewalker. 6. Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker - Not as enthralling as other games in the series, no memorable characters and a childlike theme adopted to the narrative. Still a good base building experience none the less. 5. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - Fuck Raiden. Clusterfuck of a storyline. Doesn’t have the charm of MGS 1, 3 or 4. That being said, its narrative was ahead of its time by decades. 4. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Fantastic gameplay that eventually turns repetitive, yet still amazing. However, terrible story execution and I almost see it as an act of rebellion against Konami and self-sabotage by Kojima in the way the narrative was portrayed. Completely lacking in the traditional Metal Gear story telling sense, an extremely hyped up long wait and a generally unfinished game. Gameplay makes up for this however. 3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - Blasphemy this isn’t number 1 I know, but it would be if it weren’t for nostalgic reasons taking the next two spots. Amazing game. Beautiful story. Fantastic characters. The best storyline of any MGS game. And MGS 3 Subsistence perfected the gameplay. 2. Metal Gear Solid/ Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - What can I say? The one in my opinion that truly started it all. From the Foxhound unit characters to the Cyborg Ninja, to the storyline and plot twists, to the general bad assery of Solid Snake, fuck yeah! Awesomeness. 1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - I have a reason for this being number 1. Yes, the game lacks in story execution, mostly due to the massive plot lines it needed to cover up for the entirety of the saga, and the boss battles are nothing special. That being said, the first 2 acts are amazing. The war torn setting, the depressing music to go along with it, and the old aged hero Solid Snake that we all originally played with in 1998, 10 years later becoming a shell of his former self due to accelerated aging really tugs the heart strings. But I have a personal reason MGS 4 takes top spot. Originally playing MGS 1 at 8 years old in 1998, I eventually no longer played video games around age 17/18 in the years of 2007/2008. This was due to substance abuse and financial pressures which forced me to partake in certain illegal activities in order to survive. Long story short, I was facing jail time and my mental health seriously deteriorated. In this time, fearing a looming prison sentence, I decided to play video games again after a year and a half in 2008, going out and purchasing MGS 4 and a PS3. I was enthralled from the get-go, and playing video games again, especially a series I had not played in years really helped take my mind off things. But that Act 4, the return to Shadow Moses with The Best Is Yet to Come playing in the background literally brought tears of nostalgia to my eyes. My memories of an 8 year old in 1998 playing the original MGS as my favourite character Solid Snake, only to be doing so aged 18 in 2008, 10 years on, truly was the greatest fan service from any piece of media I have ever experienced. It automatically reignited my love of all video games, not just MGS. That is why MGS 4 takes my personal favourite top spot. Hope you liked my list. YOOOOONNNNGGGGGGG OUT!!!

Personally Metal Gear Solid 4 is my favorite game in the series and one of my favorite games of all time. The story with all of its memorable moments and how it wraps the entire series up so satisfyingly makes it my favorite story in the series. And I know this is gonna be controversial, but it actually has the greatest gameplay in my opinion. It's controls and systems aren't as fine tuned as MGSV, but they're still really good and the overall gameplay structure and variety of locations and level design that makes stealth fun even when the Drebin system makes it possible to go heavy makes it the better game gameplay wise to me. I will admit I never look forward to Act 3's tailing sequence and Act 5 doesn't have a whole lot going for it in the gameplay department, but they don't ruin the overall experience at all for me.

Good shit! Your reasoning and detail are so damn solid. I'm surprised MGSV was so high, honestly I got the feeling that MGSV was a reboot within a sequel. Kojima clearly did not want to make MGS games anymore, and how much MGSV broke cannon, and Kojima's usual attention to detail being absent was a sign of that. But yeah V's gameplay and in mission sandbox were just God-like, there's no other way to slice it. It was still my favorite game of 2015, but I haven't still gone back to replay the story, just because it is not reminiscent of other cannon MGS games. Honestly I really liked the format of MGSV: GZ and I think that TPP should have took more queues from GZ. What I mean by that is would have like to have 10 min cut scene in, 1.5-2 hour mission, 10 min cut scene out. Obviously Boss fights would be in that formula, but the lack of Bosses in MGSV was really disheartening. But the wide open Afgan and Africa worlds had a lot of dead air. I could have done without the dead air and have like 5-6 camp Omega sized maps with stopping points so the game could have had cohesive story over a wider timeline. Everything happening over a short span of time was quite a flaw, we could have been dropped off at key points in the Big Boss timeline if we had stopping points, and the KO punch was the body double shit. That was just a god awful MGS twist.

For example, Peace walker theme is related to Alice in Wonderland by the caterpillar becoming a buterfly and the looks of Paz. And MGS2 theme is related with Pinochio by Raiden infiltrating the Big Shell through a big hole like a Whale mouth, and then going into the ascending colon, as if he is indide a creature. Besides Raiden is always trying to prove he is a "Real Boy". Just some clues . I hope you make analysisi of these games. Good Luck
